The Geography of the Balkans according to the anonymous "Description of Eastern Europe" of 1308

Summary/Abstract: The anonymous description of the lands of Eastern Europe from the early 14th c. offers most interesting and important data on the geography of the Balksns. It is an exposition of the notions of the West Europeans at that time about the Orthodox world, the way of life of the population and its specific features. In places the information sounds almost anecdotal, probably due to the preconceived ideas of the unknown author whose views were strongly influenced by older stereotyped patterns.
