Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the phenomenon of standard in culture and jazz music on the example of “St. James Infirmary Blues.” The variety of a particular standard is thus determined by both the list of its subsequent performers and the fact that some of them have approached it more than once and in a very creative way. Standards as an especially distinguished group preserve memory of the grandeur of the art of jazz and they serve as a commonly recognised form of the presence of jazz in culture. What is particularly valued is not the peculiarity but creative originality of every single performance. Standard is thus a specific kind of evergreen, surrounded by an aura of creativity.
