Summary/Abstract: The current research is focused on the development of the unilateral assumption of a civil obligation from the pollicitatio of Ancient Rome through the Middle Ages till nowadays. Some legal systems, which are not based on Roman Civil Law but, nevertheless, regulate the unilateral assumption of a civil obligation, are also analyzed. The Principles of European Contract Law as an important non-governmental source of Contractual Law are also discussed in the article. The article aims to broaden the horizons of its reader with regard to the unilateral assumption of a civil obligation as well as at serving as a starting point for the creation of a detailed regulation of this unilateral deal in the Republic of Bulgaria.
