Summary/Abstract: The International Court of Justice was established in 1945 as one of the main organs of the United Nations and started its work in 1946. The members of the Court are independent judges and do not represent their governments. The council has two main functions. The first of these is to decide on the cases regarding interstate disputes that apply to it in the context of international law and to give an advisory opinion in case of application to the Court by authorized international organizations and bodies. The decisions of the Court are final.
