Summary/Abstract: The expansion of digital technologies, omnipresent in the contemporary educational context, suggests the need for analysis of various concepts closely related to their implementation in higher education, as well as the problematization of their use from the position of different pedagogical conceptions. One of the most widespread forms of use of digital technologies is e-learning, which is increasingly finding its place in higher education. In view of the fact that the concepts of e-learning and distance learning are frequently used interchangeably, this paper seeks to draw a distinction between them. Focusing on e-learning, we analyze its prevalence, and the use in contemporary higher education of two basic e-learning models (synchronous and asynchronous), as well as Moodle and Blackboard, the two prevalent e-learning platforms in higher education. The paper looks at some basic elements of e-learning necessary for its comprehension, and also provides an analysis of e-learning in the context of the characteristic elements of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, two concepts of education, politicality and dialog.
