Professional Career of School Social Pedagogues in Slovakia

Summary/Abstract: Despite the legislative legitimacy, which made it possible to include the profession of school social pedagogue in the category of professional staff in Slovak schools, its use can still be considered a relatively rare phenomenon. Nevertheless, a few graduates of the social pedagogy study program succeeded in it. The aim of the paper is to approach the career development of school social educators in domestic conditions. The starting point of the research is the analysis of already published scientific studies, contributions, research findings on the profession of school social pedagogue in Slovakia and the application of the oral history research method with graduates of the Social Pedagogy and Educational Education Program at the Faculty of Education of Trnava University. Based on the narrations of these graduates, the so-called "Living libraries", maps how their careers initially developed, how they perceived the rate of acceptance of this profession in schools, their position in expert teams, which competencies and process components they prefer, and what are their predictions for future career development. The published data from the field of theory or research triangulates with the personal statements of the protagonists of the profession working in selected school environments. The authors of the paper will try to identify important qualitative indicators in the development of the career of school social teachers from the obtained data on the basis of the methodology of constant comparison.
