Summary/Abstract: The article is based on materials by Ukrainians and Hungarians in the Ukrainian Carpath¬ians tradition. The author examines the concept of “desire”. The world of desires in a folk tale represents the basic dreams and aspirations common to all mankind, and in particular the aspiration towards happiness, involving different things – common wealth, power, marriage, social justice, preserving youth and health etc. Human dreams are conveyed in the form of fairy-tale fantasy.
