Summary/Abstract: The paper describes a case-study of the student learning Polish from a beginner’s level at the Department of Polish Studies at Vilnius University. Qualitative data were collected via a questionnaire containing open-ended questions and a narrative interview, as well as participant observation. The purpose of the survey was to reveal the relationship between academic achievement and the student’s beliefs about language learning methods and techniques. One of the basic and most widely recognized limitations of case study research is the lack of generalization, but it is hoped that these findings will contribute to a better understanding of the correlation between learner autonomy and successful acquisition of a new language and culture. The case study of an ambitious student provides an insight into learner’s beliefs about language learning that contribute to successful language acquisition.
