Summary/Abstract: To understand the relation between the United Kingdom and the European Union it's necessary to look back into the past and study the history that connected them until 2016. The European construction has been an ideal of some European states' leaders who believed that unity across the continent was vital for security and progress. On the other hand, the United Kingdom was never really interested in such a European alliance, since it always had a particular position due to its geography, as well as to its past as a colonial power. The United Kingdom always kept away from European constructions, and this attitude reached the highest peak in 2016, when its citizens voted for Brexit.
