Summary/Abstract: This paper intends to be a commentary upon Eugen Ionescu’s biographical destiny and upon his dramas, in a year in which the 100-year anniversary of his birth implicitly led to new interrogations. Our analysis has taken into consideration the identity problem in the case of Eugen Ionescu who, like other colleagues of his generation in the theater of the absurd, was confronted with many identity dilemmas, as he was caught in a cultural and linguistic bilingualism. Deciphering him with the help of the psychoanalysis tools, too, we believe that, in a way, Eugen Ionescu is transferring his own identity crises to the characters he created. Author and alter ego through his plays, spectator and director of his own existence, Eugen Ionescu carries in his writing the traits of a complex character, able to draw general European interest even today.
