Summary/Abstract: Selective mutism is a disorder that most often develops in early childhood between the ages of 3 and 5, and also occurs in adults. It is characterized by a lack of verbal communication in some social situations despite establishing verbal contact in other situations. This article presented the course and clinical picture of selective mutism in two sisters from day of birth to the time of the diagnosis. Moreover, it was shown that the family of the presented patients was experiencing various psychosocial stress factors that can be perceived as factors stabilizing this disorder. It is often family that creates conditions conducive to or inhibiting its course and also forms patterns of interpersonal relations established in social environment. Limitation of social interactions could increase avoidance tendencies in a child, creating maladaptive behavior.
