Summary/Abstract: According to the extant documentary evidence, the monastery of Jitianu was founded at the end of the 16th century by the priest Novac from Popova. Shortly afterwards it was dedicated to the St. Paul’s monastery from Mount Athos. Although some previous scholars tried to associate it to the Craioveşti boyars or to the Jitian stolnic, such a connection is highly unlikely, as the monastery is not documented for such an earlier period, as the beginning of the16th century. The homonymy between the monastery's name and that of the Jitian stolnic seems to be merely a coincidence. Likewise, there are no sound arguments to consider the Jitianu monastery a foundation of the Vâlcănești boyars or one of the Obedeni boyars. The estate on which the monastery was situated was never owned by either of these two aristocratic families. Therefore, most probably, the Jitianu monastery was not part of any boyar foundation. More likely, the monastery was a foundation made by the priest Novac, supported by some aristocratic families from the region that contributed to the building and to the endowment the monastery.
