The Transformations in the Scientific Communication System and the Academic Library

Summary/Abstract: In the past, information was spread through scientific publications, later developed in a sophisticated system of communication, in which publishing houses played an important part. Nowadays, the scientific communication system is transformed by the digitalization of the documents and the use of the networks, changes that refer to the infrastructure. Radical changes in the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century in the technological field had an inevitable impact upon the society as a whole, and also upon certain fields, such as science, culture, industry or education. The scientific communication system and the libraries, as social structures, also had to bear the effects of these changes.The dissemination of knowledge and the scientific communication system are based upon the information chain, whose genesis can be found in the printed informational productions. The key-actors of the dissemination of knowledge process and of the scientific communication are the authors, the publishers, the libraries and the users, whose parts and missions change according to the scientific communication patterns. The new dimensions of libraries in the scientific communication system depend upon the implementation of technology, as well as upon the active, creative and innovative attitude of the libraries.
