Summary/Abstract: Wincenty Witos (1874-1945), the creator of the ideological, political and structural foundations of the people’s movement, played an important role in shaping Polish political thought. Witos looked at the issue of Russia through the prism of Poland’s independence. Aware of the difficult geopolitical position of the Second Polish Republic, he focused on the peaceful arrangement of relations in the international arena. The biggest obstacles in Polish-Soviet relations had a political character, like the state system, but were also influenced by all problems, prejudices, and issues that arose over a century of Russian rule in Poland after the partitions. In his opinion, these difficulties should be overcome in the name of the most vital interest: the good of the state and the maintenance of peaceful relations with its neighbours. As a realist, Witos recognised the USSR, although he criticised the internal and foreign policy of the Bolsheviks.
