Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the Russia’s attitude to the armed insurrection in Herzegovina in 1882. While the official Saint-Petersburg took a negative stance refusing to help the insurgents, Moscow Slavophils headed by I.S. Aksakov decided to use a favorable occasion to organize an anti-Austrian action. Jovan Popović- Lipovac, Russian Guards officer, a Montenegrin by birth played the leading part in it. In the end of April 1882 with a group of Montenegrin volunteers he moved from Bulgaria to Serbia aiming eventually to get to Herzegovina to help the insurgents. It is important to note that at the moment he was not in retirement but on active duty as an officer. This created a real risk of compromising the Russian government‘ s foreign policy, because of possible accusations of interfering in the „internal Austrian” affairs. Having been arrested by the Serbian authorities the Russian guardsman failed to get the battlefield in Herzegovina. After a monthly detention he was expelled back to Bulgaria. Popović-Lipovac paid a high price for his “volunteer action” – he was left without further promotion and finally retired from the army. Moreover Popović-Lipovac had to leave Russia for long 16 years… Thanks to the new archive materials revealed recently (first of all the correspondence between Aksakov and Popović-Lipovac) the author succeeded to reconstruct all the aspects of the “action”.
