Investigative Journalism in Public Service Media in Slovakia

Summary/Abstract: Developments in Slovakia after the murder of Jan Kuciak in 2018 sparked a wave of sincere public support for investigative journalism and its protagonists. This public outcry eventually also directed against the decision by the management of Radio and Television Slovakia (RTVS) to cancel the only existing television programme dedicated to investigative journalism. This article analyses several aspects of investigative journalism practise and its presentation in public service media in Slovakia. The content analysis confronts the existing definitions with concrete examples of investigative reporting by RTVS. In conclusion, the article identifies current and future challenges for investigative journalists working for public service media.
