Summary/Abstract: Foreign language learning in preschool and primary school children has its specific aspects. It is important to distinguish between learning a language and acquiring a language. Children at that age are naturally curious, have strong imagination and are very active. They have short concentration and attention span, learn quickly but tend to forget quickly too, and they need a hands–on and sensory approach. They can use the context to predict the meaning. They learn by doing and they learn through play. In this article we try to define some basic principles of foreign language learning, such as respecting the process of language development (especially the silent period), learning through play, a multi-sensory approach to language learning, maximum exposure to the target language and language competences required of foreign language teachers.
