Summary/Abstract: Globalization, Internet and IT innovations contribute to the rise of digital (virtual) currencies generated in the network with the use of computational power of computers. Bitcoin (BTC) is the most popular digital currency, other less popular are: altcoin, litecoin, peercoin, namecoin etc. The article shows the determinants of development of these currencies and the analysis of their legal authorisation in Poland and around the world exemplified by bitcoin and conducts the analysis of performance of basic functions of money by digital currencies. It seems that digital currencies may exist parallel to traditional money. There is a need to establish norms and to assure the security of transactions on this part of financial market, and also to take up activities to prevent the development of black market. There is also a need for a stable exchange rate of these currencies.
