Kosovo pre svega

Author(s): / Language(s): Serbian

Analiza nacrta Strategije odbrane Republike Srbije. The new strategic documents of the Republic of Serbia (RS) are being considered and adopted in a very dynamic period of global security and political trends. At the same time, the RS is also facing numerous unusually large internal challenges, from the need to reform the judiciary to the need to normalize relations with Kosovo. Both external and internal circumstances objectively make it difficult to adopt well-articulated strategic security and defense documents of a relatively small country in the relatively uncertain process of European integration and negotiations with Pristina, which it is conducting with the international community. Both reports, the analysis of the draft of the National Security Strategy (NSB) and the draft of the Defense Strategy (SO), under the umbrella title of Kosovo, are first of all structurally the same - the political and detailed normative context is analyzed first, followed by a qualitative analysis of the new drafts, a comparative analysis of the proposed drafts with existing legislation, and finally conclusions and recommendations.

Građani i mediji - konzumacija, navike i medijska pismenost

Author(s): Branislav Raković,Slađana Komatina,Bojan Klačar / Language(s): Serbian

The public opinion survey, which was carried out by CeSID and Propulsion with the support of USAID Serbia, was conducted in the period between August 25 and September 10, 2020, in the territory of the Republic of Serbia without Kosovo and Metohija. The research was conducted on a representative sample of 1,198 citizens between the ages of 12 and 60. A questionnaire formed in cooperation with the client, consisting of 112 questions, was used as a research instrument. The interviewing of citizens was conducted using the "face-to-face" technique, direct contact with the interviewee. During the training of the interviewers, the instructors insisted on the implementation and observance of two very important rules that, apart from the sample itself, significantly affect the representativeness of the research - respect for steps and the rule of the first birthday. Following the steps ensures that the interviewer comprehensively covers the entire research point, while the first birthday rule excludes the possibility that only those citizens who open the door to the interviewer first answer the questionnaire. Namely, the interviewer was required to interview the person in the household whose first birthday is the day of the visit. Thus, gender, educational and age representativeness of the respondents was ensured.

Medijski trendovi - Srbija 2020

Author(s): Slađana Komatina / Language(s): Serbian

The year that will soon be behind us will be remembered for the comprehensive change in the way of life, caused by the crisis of the covid 19 pandemic. According to numerous estimates, the pandemic will leave behind a crisis of unprecedented proportions, which will leave deep political, economic and social consequences for all areas of life, and therefore also for the media sector. The media year in Serbia started as usual, and during the first two months it was impossible to guess what was to come, especially since some trends from 2019 were promising - especially the growth of the media market, which after more than 10 years grew to more than 200 million euros. In addition to the growth of the media market, the trends predicted are also related to the growth of video content consumption, the ubiquity and divergence of television as a medium, influencer marketing, the emergence of new social networks, i.e. the growth of their influence and the increase in the use of online shopping. In the past few years, the search for online information, video content, as well as access to social networks with the use of smart phone devices has become much easier for users, so interaction has started to take place at any time and in any place. Predictions from the beginning of this year indicated that the mentioned trends will only continue and strengthen in 2020. However, all forecasts "fell in the water" when the pandemic became our everyday life in mid-March.

Ko brani branitelje? Mehanizmi zaštite branitelja ljudskih prava

Author(s): Isidora Stakić / Language(s): Serbian

Human rights defenders are people who act independently or jointly to improve human rights and basic freedoms and fight for their protection at local, national and international levels. As a rule, defenders' activities run counter to the interests of the powerful, be it governments or private corporations, and therefore need protection. This study analyzes legal and institutional instruments for the protection of veterans at the international level and in six countries: Colombia, Mexico, DR Congo, the Philippines, Turkey and Serbia. In these countries, human rights defenders are in a difficult situation, in which they face numerous threats and pressures - from police repression, through defamation campaigns to legal persecution. Therefore, these are countries where there is a need for additional protection of veterans, but (still) a significant gap between the normative level and practice.

Development of resistance against small hydropower plants in Serbia

Author(s): Dina Đorđević / Language(s): English

In a new case study, Dina Djordjevic, a journalist of the Centre for Investigative Reporting, presents how local actions against small hydropower plants in Serbia have turned into a mass environmental revolt at the national level. For more than a decade now, small hydropower plants (SHPPs) are being erected en masse on Serbian mountain rivers and streams. Their encouragement is part of a wider story that revolves around the fight against climate change, and around attempts to reduce the production of energy by use of coal, thus increasing the production of electricity in a way that would be less harmful to nature and human health.

Snakes, rats and drug addicts used to dwell here – analysis of the narrative utilised to capture the state

Author(s): Luka Šterić / Language(s): English

Due to the way they are contracted and implemented, foreign direct investments represent one of the key mechanisms for capturing the state. Hiding behind the stories of a better future and new jobs, the government is breaking down the system of legal regulations and statutory procedures, promoting private interest to the detriment of the public one, and using foreign investments as propaganda ammunition to legitimise unlimited power. The results of such policy are a number of negative consequences for the state and the citizens, such as the increase of public debt, dramatic violation of workers’ rights and alarming problems with environmental pollution.
