Through this experimental research, we wanted to demonstrate that the interaction between subtitles and visual modality is an essential contribution to oral comprehension (global and detailed) and vocabulary learning through the subtitled audio-visual medium. Our method consists of using a video in two modes of presentation with two distinct groups: the first without subtitles and the second with subtitles. We also used an experimental post questionnaire to find out if students would have liked to have had the text transcribed.

What Young People Know and Think They Know about Politics: Factors Influencing Political Knowledge among Romanian First-Time Voters

What Young People Know and Think They Know about Politics: Factors Influencing Political Knowledge among Romanian First-Time Voters

Author(s): Nicoleta Corbu,Dana Raluca Buturoiu,Mădălina Boţan,Valeriu Frunzaru / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

As they approach voting age, young people aged 17 to 19 years old are at a significant turning point in their political development. In this formative stage, their perceptions and understanding of the political landscape depend, among other things, on the diversity of information sources and content to which they are exposed to on a daily basis. In such a context, political knowledge plays a key role in informed decision-making for first-time voters. However, many young people tend to overestimate their levels of political knowledge, a phenomenon explained by the Dunning-Kruger effect. This study examines factors influencing both factual and perceived political knowledge among Romanian high school students (N=519). The main findings reveal a significant discrepancy between the actual political knowledge of young people and their perceived understanding of political matters. Political efficacy (the belief in one’s ability to understand and engage in politics) proves to be a strong predictor of both factual and perceived political knowledge. Those with high levels of political efficacy are not only more informed but also believe they know more about politics than their peers. Furthermore, results show that young people who believe they know more than their peers about political affairs consume more mainstream media news, but no other correlation of political knowledge with news consumption is significant. Additionally, while male students perceive themselves as more knowledgeable than females, no significant gender differences in factual knowledge were observed. These findings highlight the need for educational strategies to improve both political knowledge and efficacy, contributing to a more informed and participatory youth electorate in Romania.

Counter-Discourses in Political Economy in/through Media Literacy Education

Counter-Discourses in Political Economy in/through Media Literacy Education

Author(s): John Nuestro Ponsaran / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

For this critical inquiry, the overarching goal is framed along the pedagogical imperative of surfacing the counterpoints and countercurrents in the rendering and representation of development discourses in the textbook task section of media and information literacy instructional materials. In making perceptive sense of this type of didactic media, the researcher worked on the fundamental assumption that textbook tasks “provide the terrain where meaning is shaped” (Hall, 1973, as cited in Griffin, 1991, p. 312) and, more compellingly, where the discursive intentions of the text producers (i.e., textbook authors) are expressed, enacted, and even questioned. Along this line, the textbook task section serves as a critical and potentially a transformative component of the ideological and discursive landscape. Embodied in the authors’ social mediation in the textbook tasks are converging and diverging discourses in apprehending the word (i.e., text) and the social world (i.e., context). By employing critical discourse analysis that interrogated the textual, processual and contextual dimensions, this study specifically sought to unravel and examine the counter-discourses about the material/nonmaterial realities of development/underdevelopment in various but interconnected realms of mainstream economy, politics, media, communication, and culture. Based on this research, among the alternative discourses that emerged from the thematic analysis are those that concern and revolve around (1) political values and ideologies, (2) ethical choices and practices, (3) development challenges and issues, and (4) strategic approaches and interventions which altogether complementarily contribute to the advancement of media freedom, pedagogical reform, and development justice.

We investigated the usefulness of this strategy promoting a particular professional event aiming the potential impact on certain elements such as motivation, belonging and meaning. The analytical research of the results herein shows the attitude of professionals towards podcasts and is the first of it’s kind in Slovenia. Data were obtained using the survey method and is part of a larger study aiming to determine the impact of the professional events on the competencies. General findings establish the connection between knowing or following podcasts and the impact on individual elements of professional competences. The results showed a positive attitude of professionals leading in encouragement of reading literacy and reading culture. Comparative results show a positive trend in connection between listening to podcasts and professional competence. Those professionals who received information about podcasts, i.e. were exposed through promotion to a professional event, also listened to, and this marked their professional self-perception. Limitations are related to the size of the research, which is based on one case study. Regardeless, a sizable sample is included, which can serve as starter for a larger research to determine the impact on competencies. This enquiry in connection with competencies of professionals is not common, nor are surveys that focus on the attitude to modern strategies. Individual's attitude is highlighted when introducing modern strategies ireading literacy and reading culture promotion.

Students’ Information Seeking Behavior and Information Needs. A Case Study of "Babeș-Bolyai" University

Author(s): Gabriela Florescu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

All around the world, universities and university libraries have faced the decline in the importance as a physical entity. This decline has multiple causes, such as the change of users' expectations and needs, the universities switch from exclusively on-site work and teaching to remote or more flexible schedules, the availability of alternative sources of information, the use of new technologies (social networks, mobile technologies), the preference for anytime and remote access from personal devices, the demand for greater compatibility and interoperability of systems, and the transformation of library user from consumer into content creator. Thus, this research aims to study the information-seeking behavior of college students in the context of traditional and electronic resources). Urquhart and Rowley's model of information-seeking behavior will be applied along with Wilson's model, to identify the factors that influence information-seeking behavior: the design of information resources, the educational infrastructure, the organizational culture, the availability and access constraints, the information culture, the search strategy, the support and training, the pedagogy, the behavior of teachers regarding information, and the study discipline and curriculum. Nonetheless, the article will explore information literacy skills and the barriers to accessing and using them: cultural aspects related to teaching and learning styles, language proficiency and digital culture.

Explanatory Model of Awareness Factors of Smart Technologies for Independent Living at Home in Later Life

Author(s): Natalija Rebrica,Andraž Petrovčič,Urška Lovšin / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2025

Background: Despite the rapid development of Smart Technologies for Independent Living at Home (STILH) among older adults, their market is still underdeveloped. Low awareness is one of the key reasons for the slow uptake of STILH in later life. A significant gap exists in the literature regarding the factors that shape older adults′ awareness of STILH.Objective: The aim is to provide a conceptual overview and empirical test of awareness factors of STILH in later life. An explanatory model is proposed by integrating insights from consumer behaviour, information processing and technology adoption models. Methods: The model is tested with structural equation modelling based on survey data from a sample of 1200 internet users aged 55+ in June 2024.Results: The results support all the proposed hypotheses, indicating that exposure to information about STILH, source expertise, self-source congruity and individuals’ innovativeness directly influence awareness of STILH. Moreover, inherent novelty seeking and self-efficacy influence individuals’ innovativeness, and together with self-source congruity and source expertise positively affect exposure to information about STILH.Conclusion: Based on the study results, interventions can be tailored to help scale up STILH more efficiently, ultimately improving quality of life.

Author(s): Jelena Titko,Maris Cirulis,Dmitrijs Semjonovs,Anna Svirina,Natalja Verina / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Digital transformation (DT) is one of the key priorities for the EU. Researchers point out that successful digital transformation requires the engagement of motivated employees, and that the human factor is more important than the technology itself. People-driven approach to DT is emphasized also by the OECD. The research is aimed at identification of factors affecting staff perception of digital transformation in higher education institutions. The current paper reflects the results of the piloting stage of the study among academic staff members representing EKA University of Applied Sciences and Novikontas Maritime College. Participants took part in two parallel activities: 1) survey using a questionnaire based on the “Change Resistance Scale”, and 2) assessment of psychological and mental capabilities and limitations. The second research activity was performed using CleverPoint software. The assessment was based on the analysis of users’ psychological responses and cognitive functions through the obtained bio-signals during the VR session. The relationship between respondents’ executive functions and workability versus individual values of the Change resistance factor was explored. This is a unique cross-disciplinary research combining traditional research procedures in social sciences and psychometric experiment.

„Kunszt pisania” jako wartość w dysertacji z 1788 roku, ogłoszonej przez Jacka Idziego Przybylskiego, bibliotekarza Szkoły Głównej Koronnej w Krakowie

Author(s): Inesa Kuryan / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2024

We rarely consider whether the alphabet holds value for us. It is more of a tool for everyday writing, which value is variable and has its own history. The most precious aspect is that the act of writing with letters inherently contains the condition of commemorating only important content for future generations. An inspiring text from 1788 on the development of the Art of Writing among the Ancients by Jacek Idzi Przybylski (1756–1819), a well-known Polish figure of the Enlightenment, translator, and university librarian in Kraków, allows us to view texts and accumulated knowledge, for which universities ultimately bore responsibility, from both diachronic and axiological perspectives. This is crucial for understanding the university as a foundation for future generations of students, scholars, creators, and, more broadly, citizens. The author speaks about texts through the example of classical philology and its ethical values, reflecting on how writing and texts developed with an emphasis on particular skills in thinking and expressing emotions. For a long time, these skills were singled out as the only ones worthy of being recorded, commemorated, and passed on to future generations in the development of human civilization. The earliest attempts to record events using alphabetic writing were, for centuries, linked to valuable messages, maturing into outstanding content in both painting and literature. The axiology of the earliest ancient texts – based on high poetic standards – shaped the translation work of Jacek Idzi Przybylski,, a somewhat forgotten scholar and translator of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He, in turn, enabled students at the University of Vilna in the early 19th century to develop their own talents through his works and, as a result, demonstrate true “art of writing” in the form of outstanding works of Vilnian Romanticism.
