Complex of problems associated with the formation of the image of Zaporozhzhye is considered in the context of reflections about the nature of the relationship between historical realities and myths, about the mechanisms of formation of the latter, about the specifics of influence on the images of certain areas of the real facts, events, processes and trends that have occurred in the past, their refraction in the folk tradition. Particular attention is paid to the stereotypes about celibacy of Zaporozhzhya Cossacks, the existence of Zaporozhzhya Sich on the island of Khortytsya, about city Zaporozhye as the "heart" of the Cossack land. Сообщество как данность и сообщество как процесс: стратегии изучения малых городов

Сообщество как данность и сообщество как процесс: стратегии изучения малых городов

Author(s): Greg Yudin,Ivan Pavlyutkin / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2015

Community studies in social sciences tend to treat community as a given object with structural characteristics to be revealed. This approach is particularly adopted by researchers of local communities, including small towns. However, it is questionable whether all spatially localized social aggregates can be rightfully called communities. This paper argues that even though this approach has a long tradition in social sciences, it cannot deal adequately with the key issue of integration and disintegration of communities. The authors rely on classical sociological theory to suggest a strategy of analysis that pays attention to the dynamics of social cohesion and considers communities from the standpoint of unification processes. Building on empirical data gathered during ourstudies of Russian small towns, the authors indicate several mechanisms of consolidation that support the cohesion of communities.

Ветер, усталость и романтика ночи (об особенностях новых жилых массивов)

Author(s): Olga Brednikova,Oksana Zaporozhets / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2016

“Atmosphere” is a key term and a key perspective we used to explore the peculiarities ofa new residential district in Saint Petersburg. Atmosphere is interpreted as an accentuation of the particular experiences and emotions connected to a specific place. We discovered that the atmosphere of the residential district that we studied is created by the efforts of the locals to overcome shortages of infrastructure, remoteness from the city center, numerous inconveniences, and imperfections of the place. Therefore, basic elements of the atmosphere are wind and fatigue. Numerous imperfections and challenges of the district seem to be overcome during the night time, when the darkness makes them invisible. This overcoming is an illusion, but it helps the locals to produce and maintain the positive attitude toward the place.

Author(s): Namık Tanfer Altaş / Language(s): Turkish Issue: Special/2016

The urban rehabilitation studies have been attracting the attention of a wide circle. Particularly the historical structures taking an important place in the identity of a city as well as the elements such as the residences reflecting the cultural identity of an area are being taken within the scope of urban rehabilitation studies. The deformations and gradual impairments being observed in such areas make the rehabilitation studies a necessity in the concerning areas. That is to say, clearing the unplanned urbanization surrounding the old urban areas as well as reinforcing the infrastructure and the superstructure in order to make them become reusable have importance in order to bring back the appearance of the old city as much as possible. Surely, some changes will be available functionally in this process. Such as a former madrasa becoming a museum following the rehabilitation studies.

BAFRA KÖY ADLARINA BİR BAKIŞ

Author(s): Yunus Emre Uyar / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 7/2010

Author(s): Marta Borowska-Stefańska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 147/2016

The aim of the article is to analyze methods of flood risk assessment used in Poland and to compare the results obtained on the basis of these analyses. The analysis involves 21 communes ( Polish: gmina ), which in the document created by the Department of Security and Crisis Management of the Łódź Municipal Government were referred to as those in which the damage connected with flooding is the biggest. In accordance with the Flood Directive ( 2007 ), flood risk is a “ combination of the probability of a flood event and potential adverse consequences for human health, the natural environment, and cultural and economic activity ” ( Flood Directive of 2007, Art. 2 Item 2 ). The article uses the methodology implemented in the Flood Control Operating Plan for the Łódź province ( 2013 ), Plans of Flood Risk Management ( 2015 ), and their results were compared with the author’s interpretation. Research has shown that the biggest discrepancies concerning flood risk levels concern five communes: Uniejów, Działoszyn, Warta, Gidle and Sulejów. This is linked with a different attitude towards flood risk. Regrettably, there still exists no reliable method of risk assessment, which would greatly facilitate the pursuance of an adequate anti-flood policy.

SPATIUL RURAL SI AGRICULTURA – ELEMENTE ORGANICE ALE ECONOMIEI MEDIEVALE: DIRECTII SI TEME DE CERCETARE

Author(s): George-Aurelian Bilavschi / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 1/2014

Rural landscape and medieval communities have often been regarded as being mainly static, belonging to some “traditional” or unchanging past. This stereotype point of view can be rejected, by regarding the agriculture as a dynamic process, where the main roles were held by nature, rural landscape and ecological space and the individual with his concerns, feelings and experiences, permanently balancing between stability, change, resilience, crisis and innovation. The daily routine and the medieval man’s concern to provide food, structured its relationship with the environment, as well as inter-community relations. The knowledge regarding crops and plants, soils and climate were complemented by skills and experience in agriculture, metalwork and tool manufacture, all these being placed in a natural, anthropogenetic and socially distinct environment. The present study stands for an introduction to an intricate analysis of the medieval rural world of the Eastern Carpathian area. Such an article meets the necessity of an enlarged database, as it takes into consideration information provided by corroborating disparate and often anachronistic or confusing archaeological and historical data. Medieval rural research started quite late inRomania, in the second half of the 19th century, when a few studies were published by ethnologists, linguists, and agronomists. It was only towards the middle of the 20th century, when the rural areas started to be archaeologically investigated but without substance and consistency. In our country, elements of "everyday life" and agricultural space organization were briefly discussed, the research being tainted by the lack of historical sources (written sources and archaeological research). Our historical and archaeological data cannot be compared to the situation in other European countries and, moreover, what we have has not been exploited enough. In addition, such a topic requires the use of a very large range of information provided by several complementary fields of research, interdisciplinarity being instrumental in this case. Nowadays, topics related to human inter-relations, individual and communal mentality, food and culinary practices, hygiene, education, culture and religious practices, ordinary and eschatological fear, archaic landscape and the ecology of the daily medieval landscape, are a constant presence in European scientific circles and research programs. In many academic centers of Europe important monographic works and studies were published, on topics such as rural territory organization and structure of countryside communities, paleoclimatology, agricultural landscape and the ecology of rural settlements, commercial networks, and centers of production, culinary art, etc.

Херодот (8, 115, 3-4) за Ксеркс, пеоните (при Сирис?) и „свещената колесница на Зевс”

Author(s): Dilyana Boteva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 20/2012

This study is dealing with some unclear details in Hdt. VIII, 3-4 concerning the place where Xerxes had left behind the sacred chariot of Zeus during his march against Greece in 480 BC. Traditionally it is accepted that it was left with the Paeones at Siris, which however does not fit grammatically in the text. Accordingly, other possibilities or acceptable explanations should be searched for.

On Some Discoveries of the Warsaw University Expedition at Novae (1960–1983)

Author(s): Ludwika Press / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2011

The text offers a survey of the results of the archaeological explorations of the Bulgarian-Polish expedition, which started in 1960 on the territory of the Roman city of Novae, on the right bank of the Danube, near Svishtov. The localisation of the settlement became possible owing to the data from the Roman itineraries, different ancient written evidence and finds on the surface: mostly inscriptions and building ceramics with a seal bearing the name of the First Italic Legion, which was known to have been stationed in Novae. The shape of the fortification was confirmed based on archaeological data, the fortress walls and towers were traced, as well as the city gates, which were found to have undergone several successive phases of reconstruction. The principia with its two building phases was localised in the city’s central part. The building was demolished in the early 4th century, and then new habitation followed, this time of a civilian nature. A marble head of Caracalla was found in the stratum of the demolition, and in some of the rooms from that period – bronze ingots, lead pipes and a coin hoard. It is assumed that the accumulation of metal objects was connected with the smelting of metal. Five or six street levels were found by means of drilling not far from the principia. Ruins from the military hospital that had been built in the early 2nd century were unearthed in the northwestern part of the fortress. Inscriptions dedicated to Asclepius and Hygeia were found and the building was apparently heated by means of the hypocaust system. The forum was localised and close to it a large Christian basilica was explored.

Montemno – Temenites Mons – Света Гора

Author(s): Tosho Spiridonov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 19/2011

The paper presents an analysis and an attempt at identification and localisation of the oronym Temenites mons, which appeared on maps from the 16th–19th century. In some cases it was placed to designate a small mountain separated from the main body of the Hemus mons between the sources of the Yantra and Ossam rivers in the Troyan part of the Balkan Range, while on other maps it is placed near a settlement named Ternoua. In conclusion, the author stresses the uncertainty in the interpretation of the oronym. On the one hand, it is possible to assume a connection with the toponym Montemno (Roman road station on the road from Oescus to Philippopolis localised near Beklemeto) and it may designate a mountain between the Yantra and Ossam rivers (probably Vassilyovska mountain). The second possibility is connected with literal translation of the oronym as Sacred Mountain related to the Sacred Mountain of Tarnovo, hence on some maps the oronyms is placed close to Tarnovo.

In the process of reintegrating Romanian research in the international landscape, publishing plays a central role. However, the pressure to publish is higher in urban planning, where articles are not necessarily the main research output. In order to answer the challenge, from its very creation, the Doctoral School of Urban Planning at “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urban Planning in Bucharest, Romania aimed to focus its program on a broader dissemination of the doctoral research results. However, since many doctoral students were not familiar with publishing, the present journal was created as an opportunity for them to practice before publishing in other journals. Therefore, this journal is aimed at presenting the doctoral research within the Doctoral School of Urban Planning at “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urban Planning to a broader audience and promoting the outstanding university research in urban planning.

UTJECAJ RIJEKE DRAVE NA NASELJA U ĐURĐEVEČKOJ PODRAVINI - PRIMJER SELA BROD U 18. I 19. STOLJEĆU

Author(s): Nikola Cik / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 13/2017

The river Drava and its tributaries were in the past a very important geographic element in the Đurđevec area of Podravina because the floods restricted access to the banks of Drava and prevented settling in its vicinity. However, the great river had an attractive power for the people of Podravina, which is seen in the example of a ramified path networkt that led from all settlements in Đurđevec area of Podravina to the river Drava. The end points of such paths were river mills and crossings. This path network has affected environmental changes between the river Drava and the settlements located on the borders of the Đurđevečki peski (Đurđevec sands). A relatively wide zone of the forest-swamp area, partly meliorated and deforested during the 18th and 19th centuries, used to strech along the right bank of the river Drava. The process of deforestation and swamp draining, i.e. regulation of the tributaries of the Drava, was parallel to the process of occurence of konaki as temporary residences for humans and livestock. They originated in response to agrarian overcrowding in this part of Podravina in the second half of the 18th century. Konaki became independent villages in the 19th and 20th centuries, and because of the vicinity of the Drava, a specific coexistence with the river was developed there. The paper is focused on the village Brod, which was situated on the very bank of the river Drava during the 18th and first half of the 19th century and whose inhabitants have developed a specific coexistence with water through generations. We learn about life in Brod from various cartographic and written historical sources, especially from Parish register books with data for demographic research.

ZAČETNO OBDOBJE SLOVENSKIH ZGODOVINOPISNIH RAZISKOVANJ PODROČJA REKE DRAVE V SLOVENIJI

Author(s): Andrej Hozjan / Language(s): Slovenian Issue: 13/2017

Among slovenian historiographical researches of Drava river territory in the Republic of Slovenia the most important research corpus belonges to the history of the Drava Valley., i. e. the territory between towns Dravograd and Maribor. Slovenian researching of that territory had started after the WW I, as an answer to some german spoken articles before WW I on that thema. Josip Mravljak, born and lived in town Vuzenica in Drava Valley (died in 1953), was the first slovenian author of more historiographical articles mostly about the towns, the peasantry uprisings and nobles, about the life, determinated by the river, and others. Starting of brighter interest about the Drava river past in Slovenian was the research opus of Jože Koropec. His works and monographies, writed and published in the 60.‘s and 70.‘s of 20th Century, finally established that part of slovenian Drava as an legitime thema of historiographical survey and research.
