Entrepreneurship As Drivers Of Growth, Wealth Creation And Sustainable Development In Nigeria

Entrepreneurship As Drivers Of Growth, Wealth Creation And Sustainable Development In Nigeria

Author(s): Ayodeji O. Ojo,Isaac B. Oluwatayo / Language(s): English Issue: 8/2015

Entrepreneurship is a veritable tool for the achievement of inclusive growth and consequently sustainable development. There are many opportunities entrepreneurs can harness in Nigeria given the demographic dividends. In fact, the youths constitute about 60 percent of the Nigerian population. Opportunities include but not limited to agriculture, creation of place utility for manufactured products (toiletries, beverages among others), repairs and servicing of mobile phones, computers, generators, cars etc. However, because of the deplorable state of wellbeing in the country, a sizeable number of youths are now being employed as touts and thugs by politicians to cause chaos at rallies. The rising wave of crimes in the form of electoral malpractices, commercial violence or economic terrorism and motor park rent seeking among others are common cases to ponder. The huge infrastructure deficits (road, power, water etc.), inadequate access to credit and disastrous policy regime constrain entrepreneurial development in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends public-private partnership in wealth creation towards achieving enhanced and sustainable economic wellbeing. There is the need to fight corruption heads on by taking the fight to the grassroots. Government should put entrepreneurs at the centre of trade and commerce policy formulation and implementation.

Socijalno poduzetništvo u funkciji ostvarivanja socio-ekonomskog razvoja lokalnih zajednica Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine

Author(s): Ehlimana Spahić,Nedreta Šerić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 3/2017

The aim of the article is to explore the role and importance of social entrepreneurship, and to analyze theoretical and practical aspects of social entrepreneurship in the function of achieving social and economic development of local communities. Social entrepreneurship in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a contemporary challenge with highly fragmented forms of business practices and under utilized opportunities. The perspective of social entrepreneurship is reflected in the fact that it is an integral part of the unavoidable reforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is no doubt that the resolution and prevention of the social needs and social problems of members of local communities depends on the effects of the economic development of local communities. The results in practice have shown that the failure to dedicate more attention to social development, during the process of planning of the development in the local community, has an extremely negative repercussion on the quality of local development. On the other hand, the development of the local community implies active community. The participation of community members in activities that contribute to community development directly, or indirectly, largely depends on their willingness to be active participants in the development of their local communities. In this context, social entrepreneurship, as a recently recognized phenomenon in our country, represents an essential instrument for motivation of the citizens to be more active, as well as an instrument for achieving social and economic development, through which is possible to mitigate economic disproportion, poverty and social exclusion. Social entrepreneurship emphasizes the unavoidable interconnection between social and economic development through which economic and social value are realized.

On the heaviness of feathers, or what has culture got to do with the failure to establish an organic poultry production business in contemporary Serbia?

Author(s): Slobodan Naumović / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2006

This case study starts from the thesis that the analysis of life histories, coupled by observation of actual behaviour, can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the ways in which overarching categories like "socio-economic cultures" actually function in the local and national settings. It is based on in-depth interviews with a former top manager in the agro-veterinary section of a Serbian export-import firm. The informant presents the reasons that have influenced him to leave his job and attempt to establish an organic agro-business, offers a personal view of political and cultural factors that have caused the decline of Yugoslav and Serbian economies, and explains how these factors have influenced his business and family survival strategies, among which exploitation of family work and instrumentalisation of kinship and neighbourhood networks were most prominent. The case study thus reveals the actual "cultural resources" that the informant was ready to turn to in order to sustain his entrepreneurial efforts. Next, the case study suggests that "narrow" professional cultures, like managerial or entrepreneurial cultures, can have more impact on individual behaviour than "broader" national or regional cultures. In that sense, when the functioning of national "socio-economic culture(s)" is properly contextualized, then it has to be seen as neither the only, nor the principal factor that can explain observable behaviour, particularly in rapidly changing political, economic, institutional, and legal settings, characterised by lingering state capitalism, conquering predatory capital accumulation, semi-functional legal system, agricultural policy breakdown, and rampant corruption.

Doba oligarhije

Doba oligarhije

Author(s): Žarko Paić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2015

The author discusses the analysis of philosophical-political aspects concerning the formation and rise of oligarchic rule in modern democratic and authoritarian regimes in globaly networked societies. Demonstrating that the problem boils down to the relationship between economics, politics and culture of neo-liberalism and meritocracy, consideration is based on the historical-structural analysis of three interrelated parts: 1. offsetting the power of mass within the democratic paradox of our time; 2. reversal in the manner of representation of the informational or cognitive capitalism in which psycho-controling techniques of human desire crossing the borderlines in the age of economic management to the stage of marketing policy; 3. the birth of the dark side of Other in the neoliberal strategy and discourse of the ruling in the global order – mafia, that is no longer something abhorrent outside the system, but rather makes the structural foundation of the distribution of economic and political power today. In close-reading the Foucault's notion of governance (gouvernmentalité) and Ranciere's critique of "liberal consensus", the author concludes that the oligarchical model demolition of democracy cannot be understood without the basic reason occurrence of this phenomenon, such as the end of the sovereignty of nation-states and the penetration of techno-scientific logic of corporate management world. In this way the political and policy from its irreducibility has been transformed into an instrument of power corporatism without a subject.
