The incremental informativeness of sell-side earnings forecasts. Evidence for the Warsaw Stock Exchange

The incremental informativeness of sell-side earnings forecasts. Evidence for the Warsaw Stock Exchange

Author(s): Stephen T. Jakubowski,Piotr Wójtowicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 105/2019

We investigate whether earnings forecasts issued by sell-side analysts are incrementally informative about the returns of firms listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE), a moderately-developed, post-communist capital market. Our sample covers the fiscal years 2008-2016. The informativeness of earn-ings (and earnings forecasts) is defined as the association between earnings (earnings forecasts) and returns. Our findings indicate that the mean earnings forecasts issued by sell-side analysts are incremen-tally informative about firm returns beyond the earnings reported. This result does not depend on firm size, profitability, or market return. The findings indicate that such forecasts incorporate useful incremen-tal valuation information and that the incremental informativeness of these forecasts serves to protect the interests of analysts’ clients.

The Influence of Bata Shoe Company Development on Entrepreneurship and Implications for the Present

The Influence of Bata Shoe Company Development on Entrepreneurship and Implications for the Present

Author(s): Pavla Brečková,Irena Němčická / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2016

The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of the expansion of Bata Shoe Company on entrepreneurship in the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic1 and to find a parallel with the current problems of entrepreneurship in the Czech Republic after almost a century. The partial aim was to trace the impact of the significantly development-oriented strategy of Bata Shoe Company to a steep decline in numbers of entrepreneurs in the shoemaking field in the stated period of 1920s and 1930s, and to realistically describe business environment of that time with the emphasis on entrepreneurship. Another partial goal was to find the above mentioned parallel with present and to identify any implications for the current situation and development of entrepreneurship in this country in general. Entrepreneurship comes back to centre of academic interest and is highly topical these days as one of the pillars of regional sustainability, which is, however, on decline. Concerning the methodology, the research is based on our own examination and processing of unique archive of statistical, descriptive and legislation resources from 1920s and 1930s. In addition, it is based on the analysis of the current entrepreneurship in CZE with an emphasis on artisan trades, as also other data and their comparison from surveys and analyses made by authors in the past were used. The results of the research proved that growth and development strategy of Bata Shoe Company had only a limited impact on the steep decline of entrepreneurship in the field of shoemaking, while among other a technological progress (and industrialisation) played an important role. In order to have higher validation of the result, the archive data were also compared with fields that did not undergo such dramatic technology change. The article also presents a number of parallels with the current entrepreneurship situation.

The Influence of Changes in the Hydrological Regime of the Ural River in the West Kazakhstan Region on Fish Resources

Author(s): Daniyar A. Tagayev,Turesh Murzashev,Arkady Kim,Zhaskhaiyr Karagoishin / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2018

The Ural River is one of the main fisheries reservoirs of Kazakhstan. Its hydrological regime has been unstable over the past 10 years, which has affected the formation of fish resources. The present study has shown that commercial fish populations decrease from year to year due to the deterioration of spawning conditions in low-water years, when spawning grounds are not fully watered. In these years, the spawning efficiency decreased from 11% to 70%.

The Influence of Clusters on Economic Development. A Comparative analysis of Cluster Policy in the European Union and Japan

The Influence of Clusters on Economic Development. A Comparative analysis of Cluster Policy in the European Union and Japan

Author(s): Katarzyna Cheba / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2015

The development of clusters seems to be a natural consequence of the observed trends in the global economy. The increased interest in the creation and development of clusters can also be seen in most of the countries of the European Union, however, the experience of EU countries in this field is different. In addi-tion to strong clusters with a long tradition, new clusters are created with much lower potential. Clusters compatible with the most important EU documents are to play the role of organizations supporting regional development and ensuring the growth of innovation of the European Union in the new programming period. The Japanese economy is based on the important role of clusters in this area, which along with the US and the European Union is among the largest economies in the world. The experience of Japan in this area is much longer. A lot of still functioning clusters were created in this country in the XVII and XVIII centuries. The aim of this study is a comparative analysis of the socio-economic situation of the European Union and Japan, with special emphasis on the role that clusters play in those economies. The result of the analysis is to identify the factors that allow for the effective operation of enterprises within created cluster structures. The analysis of Japan's experience in this area is a valuable source of information for policy guidelines developed to support clusters in the EU.

The Influence of Education on Subjective Underemployment: Research on Multinational Corporations in Romania

The Influence of Education on Subjective Underemployment: Research on Multinational Corporations in Romania

Author(s): Vlad I. Roșca,Oana-Lorena Țeposu / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2018

The purpose of this research was to investigate what effects demographics, in general, and education, in particular (independent variables x), had on the subjective underemployment (dependent variable y) of corporate employees in Romania. A Likert Scale survey questionnaire was administered to 110 employees of multinational businesses operating in Romania during February and May 2018, asking respondents to assess to what extent they felt they were underemployed. Answers were then correlated with the demographic regressors. Perceptions of underemployment were influenced by education (p = 0.006), though not by other variables such as age or marital status. Results invalidate the Null Hypothesis and reveal that subjective underemployment is being manifested on the Romanian corporate labour market, touching base with previous researches in the area, showing that the higher the level education, the greater the chances of perceived underemployment to occur. At the same time, the research addresses ways to combat underemployment, such as increasing self-esteem levels, re-designing the educational system or life-long learning.

The Influence of Energy Resources in Developing “Pragmatic” Relations between Azerbaijan and the West

The Influence of Energy Resources in Developing “Pragmatic” Relations between Azerbaijan and the West

Author(s): Sabina Strimbovschi / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2016

The aim of the paper is to research the way energy resources shaped Azerbaijan’s foreign policy and contributed to developing its strategic relations with western actors trying, at the same time, to bring arguments whether or not the democratic deficit in Azerbaijan is related to the “resource na-tionalism”. The author makes a retrospective analysis of the most important events that have influ-enced Azerbaijan’s foreign policy since the collapse of USSR. In this regard, it is assessed the im-pact of the “Contract of the Century” on the evolution of the country, forasmuch the signing of the document is considered the first strategic move made by Azerbaijan since 1991. Because Nagorno-Karabakh is a crucial priority for the country’s territorial integrity, it is examined the manner in which Azerbaijani authorities are trying to make use of the energy resources projects in order to speed up the settlement of the protracted conflict, but without success so far. Last but not least, are analysed the EU-Azerbaijan relations, both on the energy and political level, highlighting on the one hand, the reluctance of Azerbaijan towards the democratic reforms promoted within the Eastern Partnership, but on the other hand, the interest of Baku to negotiate the unwanted agreements with Brussels, counting on its advantage as a supplier of energy resources on the European market. Con-sequently, some key questions have emerged: Is the EU’s strategic objective to ensure its energy security more important than promoting and encouraging its partners to adopt the fundamental val-ues of the EU? What impact may have the Strategic modernization partnership on the EU-Azerbaijan relations? Is European Union’s credibility in danger, by having so diverse approaches towards the Eastern Partnership countries?

The purpose of this paper is to see and analyze the influence of the eligible expenditures that are coming from court decisions in favor of beneficiaries and the possible eligible expenditures that will appear if the beneficiaries will gain in court, on the state budget and on the Romania financial allocation granted by the European Commission for 2007-2013 programming period.

The Influence of Financing on the Dynamics of Housing Prices

The Influence of Financing on the Dynamics of Housing Prices

Author(s): Mirosław Bełej,Sławomir Kulesza / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2014

Real estate market can be thought of as an open, dynamic system. It means that it is able to exchange stimuli with other open systems, and that its state evolves in a way that might be described mathematically. It turns out that two main processes contribute to the overall evolution of the real estate market: long-term, predictable evolution, interrupted by sharp changes of catastrophic origin. In this picture, national housing funds play an important role in supporting the housing finance: on one hand they could either stimulate or suppress the real estate market influencing the availability of the mortgage credit, but on the other hand, they could also help to stabilize prices. In this study, an attempt was made to determine the degree of relationship between the volume of mortgage financing from national housing funds and the dynamics of real estate prices.

The Influence of Romania’s Banking Institutions in the Absorption of Structural and Cohesion Funds in the Period 2014-2020

Author(s): Dumitru BELDIMAN,Mihai Octavian PERPELEA / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2015

The absorption of EU funds made available to each member state of the European Union is one of their main priorities, also a priority of Romania in the 2014-2020 programming period, given that European funds are considered an important alternative source for financing the economy, with the help of which we will be able to meet the three new priorities of Europe Strategy 2020, namely “smart growth, sustainable growth, growth favorable for inclusion”. In our opinion, the authors, one of the most important obstacles in the absorption of European funds, obstacle that is common to all Member States, is the inability of potential applicants for EU funds, be they representatives of local public authorities, NGOs, religious units, SMEs, micro enterprises, other categories of eligible applicants, etc. to demonstrate the financial sustainability of the project during implementation, namely to be able to sustain the imposed compulsory co-financing programs as a share of total eligible costs of the project and bear the ineligible costs of the project. The demonstration of financial sustainability during the implementation of a project financed from European funds can be made by the applicant either by demonstrating its ability to self-finance the charges imposed by the managing authority of the funding program, namely through the co-financing share of eligible and ineligible expenses for the project, either through a credit agreement concluded with a bank or through a letter of guarantee, letter of comfort, etc. issued by a banking institution. In this regard, as it can be seen, the role of banking institutions in the absorption of European funds is particularly important, aspect that shall be highlighted in this article, which is oriented towards the discovery of hypotheses not towards the confirmation or refutation of hypotheses.

The Council Regulation (EC) 1257/1999 on support for rural development from the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee was adopted in 1999. The programmes that are currently binding in the territory of Poland were developed in accordance with the EU policy expressed in the abovementioned acts and other documents concerning development of rural areas. These included: the Rural Development Programme that focused on social and environmental aspects, as well as a part of the Sectoral Operational Programme devoted to the development of rural areas, as well as restructuring and modernization of the food sector. Based on the priorities of the Council regulation, two strategic objectives have been set: 1) Improvement of competitiveness of the agriculture and food economy, 2) Sustainable development of rural areas. Implementation of these objectives requires the support of the Common Agricultural Policy. Polish European Union membership contributed to setting its objectives and increasing the ability to subsidise economic entities, as well as develop both the food and rural areas economy.
