FROM SELF-REPRESENTATION TO SELF-TRANSFORMATION – SUBJECTIVITY AND AUTHORSHIP

FROM SELF-REPRESENTATION TO SELF-TRANSFORMATION – SUBJECTIVITY AND AUTHORSHIP

Author(s): Iskra Tasevska Hadji Boshkova / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2024

The proposed paper aims to question the established concepts regarding writing and authorship, and to examine the possibilities of defining authorship as a phenomenon in literature and culture overall. We strive to explore bilingual writers not only from the perspective of the applied idioms but also regarding the creation of the writer’s selfhood in his work. Our analysis is focused on two Macedonian authors who share diverse cultural backgrounds – Erol Tufan and Luan Starova, whose works reexamine the notions of cultural context and identity, prone to transformation. The discussion about the postmodern decline of the Cartesian subject, on a discursive level, presupposes a need for a more in-depth analysis of how the subject/self is constructed in language. Rosi Braidotti claims that modernity is in fact a reassessment of “the universal subject of knowledge”, in terms of the possibility of its determination on a biological and historical level. If the self is taken into consideration as a particular individual in the historical and cultural process, this implication proves the fragility of this concept (as Irigaray implies). Regarding the strategies of what is called “politics of subjectivity”, we are striving to demonstrate how adopting a more nomadic point of view, in fact, helps to determine the subject more appropriately. The French term “assujettissement” demonstrates how subjectification is a material and a semiotic process that defines the subject through a number of variables. In that sense, the subject is understood more in the complex relationship with the strategies of signification – it undermines the process by which one side is determining and the other is merely adapting to what is stated as truth or fact. By taking into account the nomadic state of being, one can discern that it is the “set of conventions'' and cultural norms that are re-examined, not in a sense of an actual spatial and/or temporal change (a state of being ungrounded by the constant change of habitat and context), but in terms of questioning the modes of thought and behavior. This approach also involves an analysis of nomadism as a language phenomenon and a strategy that does not imply a strict cultural perspective. The author's identity is taken as a whole that consists of different parts, and in that sense Erol Tufan underlines the idea of multilayered consciousness, which does not discriminate any aspect of the experience it is involved in. Luan Starova, on the other hand, affirms Balkan exile as a point of no return, thus creating a vision of a neighboring, but hostile and unfriendly culture. By representing his own return from the European culture of his further education, he envisions a circular movement that provides the closure of conflicting viewpoints and desires. If willingness to transgress borders is the differentia specifica of Starova’s standpoint, in Erol Tufan’s poetry it is the affirmation of the multifaceted subject, which does not transform into hybrid being but resolves in the affirmation of different cultural backgrounds that prove their influence to the creation of the artistic identity.

ИНТЕРПРЕТАЦИЈА НА СРЕДНОВЕКОВНИ АПОКРИФИ ПРЕКУ БИБЛИСКИ И БОГОМИЛСКИ ВРСКИ

Author(s): Milena Ristova - Mihajlovska,Vane Derivolov / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 5/2024

The purpose of this paper is to emphasize apocryphal literature in the context of medieval literature. With this paper, we aim to bring the apocryphal texts closer to the target audience through a multimedia approach and in a creative-interpretive way. When we started working on this paper, we had in mind the lack of representation of the Apocrypha in primary and secondary education programs. Accordingly, we hypothesized that young people would not have knowledge and understanding of these medieval texts. To confirm our assumption, we conducted research by surveying 114 respondents who are part of the educational process. Those 114 respondents are pupils and students in different schools and faculties, and they are also from institutions from different municipalities. The survey confirmed the hypothesis. Specifically, according to the results of the survey, a very small percentage of respondents have knowledge of the term Apocrypha. Therefore, we made a video - material that will be available to the young population through social networks. The video material will be available and distributed to the teachers of the respondents, who we hope will emphasize the apocryphal texts as part of the minimum number of classes dedicated to medieval literature. Within the framework of this paper, we also talk about the authorship of the Apocrypha, and locate their origin. We emphasize the division of the Apocrypha. In terms of authorship, we emphasize the fact of the existence and beginnings of Bogomilism on Macedonian soil, thus starting the connection of apocryphal literature with the Bogomil movement. Also, through this paper we highlight the biblical connections of the Apocrypha. We confirm this through an interpretative approach to several medieval apocrypha, and by determining the similarities and differences in them. Hence, in many apocrypha only motifs are taken from the Bible, and the rest of the text has no correspondence with the Holy Scriptures. Apart from the motifs, toponyms and personalities are biblical. We emphasize the Bogomil connections of the Apocrypha in terms of their authorship.

The article was based both on Gorky’s correspondence with Siberians and on his prose.

Georg Büchner – anatom

Georg Büchner – anatom

Author(s): Jan Balbierz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2024

This article is a discussion of the book Atlas anatomiczny Georga Büchnera (George Büchner’s Anatomical Atlas) by Anna R. Burzyńska. The author tries to show that Burzyńska interprets the literary and scientific texts of the German writer through the theories of Michel Foucault, but extends them to include a broad context related to the history of ideas and science. Special attention is devoted to the interference of the medical and literary discourse. The basic theme of the book is the materiality of culture, manifested at various levels: as the materiality of the manuscript (the vast majority of Büchner texts were not published during his lifetime and the manu- scripts contain a number of versions of the same scenes, they are also difficult to read and half-destroyed), the philosophical materialism related to social criticism (in The Hessian Courier, Büchner uses statistics and economic data to show the material aspects of social inequalities) and finally corporeal descriptions (Büchner is fascinated by the human body, disease, the physicality of our existence; also as a scientist he undertakes a material analysis of the bodies of vertebrates). The article shows how the writer’s work opens up to a variety of contemporary literary and cultural theories, from poststructuralism through post-secularism to somatopoetics.

FERNANDO PESSOA’S MODEL OF CRIME STORY

FERNANDO PESSOA’S MODEL OF CRIME STORY

Author(s): Marica Liović,Anamarija Galić / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2023

In the crime fiction, the theme is primarily the crime: accordingly, the narration is focused on the investigation and unraveling of the unknown details relevant to the specific criminal act. It should also be emphasized that most theoreticians believe that prose works of criminal fiction genre are characterized by linear-returning narrative, considering the fact that the uncovering of the crime directs the plot both towards the past (the time when the criminal act took place), but also towards the future (the time in which the criminal puzzle gets solved and in which the criminal is justly punished): with regard to the cause-and-effect sequence, the templated time perspective, it is a ring sequence: the beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. In the classic crime genre literary piece, the key characters are the criminals and, of course, the detective, even though in the works of the best-selling author of novels in general (Agatha Christie), it is possible to detect elements that go beyond the framework of the established crime genre work (or detective story): this means that attention is paid not only to the final goal - the uncovering of the crime, but to a greater extent to the process itself, and also to a kind of psychologizing when it it comes to the person who is a criminial. The paper will try to describe the model(s) of the crime fiction story of one of the most influential Portuguese authors of the 20th century in the period of modernism, Fernando Pessoa, since his literary strategies differ greatly when he is surrounded by what we have described as a classic crime text: here we primarily mean construction the story, on a regularly disappointed horizon of expectations and when it comes to the construction of the classic roles of detective and criminal, but even more so the process of investigation that Pessoa, in accordance with his unusual literary script, will raise to a completely innovative level. Contemplation, philosophical discussions, emphasizing logic and thought processes, and the very analysis and clarification of all aspects of the art of reasoning undoubtedly go beyond the scope of a detective story. The most complete explanation of this text would be that it represents a theoretical-scientific approach to the crime/detective story, actually its crucial links, with e exemplifications. The autoanalytical monologue becomes the fundamental method both for uncovering of the crime and for building the character of the investigator. The research is focused on reading Quaresma's Police stories from the collection Novelas Policiárias [Police and Other Stories] and detecting elements of the crime fiction genre, as well as elements that leave this framework and in some way have a subversive effect on the genre itself. This research is primarily focused on the analysis of Pessoa's crime stories and their comparison with the classic crime/detective story model. The differences that would appear in the process of comparative reading would represent the basis for the description of Pessoa's model of the crime story.

Discursul prefațial al lui Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu între cheie de lectură și exercițiu critic

Discursul prefațial al lui Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu între cheie de lectură și exercițiu critic

Author(s): Ruxandra Diana Moholea (David) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 49/2023

The prefacial discourse (or the original term discours préfaciel introduced by Frédéric Mittérand) proves to be a very difficult task, because it is an extremely meaningful element of paratext. Not only does it provide valid information about a certain literary text, but also it is meant to establish a connection between the book and its potential readers. One important question about prefaces in general and Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu’s prefaces in particular is if they can be considered an act of literary criticism or merely a eulogy. We are interested in following the strategies and criteria used in some of the prefaces written for several books of foreign writers. We also try to establish how well these prefaces ‘translate’ the writers’ intentions and how objective or subjective is the critical approach, if there is one.

THE HOMERIC ISSUE IN A NOVEL BY I. KADARE

Author(s): Shaban Sinani / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2021

When the H File novel was published in the Nentori magazine (1981), a novel which was widely known later as The File on Homer, with very few exceptions, almost nothing was known about the founders of the theory of orality, Milman Parry and Albert Lord, visitors to Northern Albania and to the more remote Sandjak during the 1930s. Both of them were renowned Harvard University scholars in the United States. Their names are still in the sidelines in the Albanian field of studies. Not only the Harvard collection of the Albanian songs is still unpublished, but also the essential work of Albert Lord, The Singer of Tales, even though it was translated more than halfa century ago by Nelson Qabej, entitled The Singer of Tales, it is still unpublished and its manuscript is preserved in the archive funds of the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Art Studies (former Institute of Folk Culture). Before those tales, only the Frenchman Albert Dumont had thought to look into the Balkan area to find explanations for the Homeric issue.

KINISMS AND CALQUES WITH CHINESE CONTENT IN ALBANIAN LITERATURE - IN THE NOVELS “CONCERT AT THE END OF WINTER” (L KADARE) AND “IVORY DRAGON...” F. KONGOLI ETC.

Author(s): Ruzhdi Stringa / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2021

When mentioning written literature, given the purpose expressed in the title of this paper, will consider firstly literature and then journalism. Literary works are mostly read for entertainment, but also for knowledge and less for information; the news is read, generally, to be informed. It is not me the first one to say that. This is also too obvious. Despite the often-observed deviations from the aim, both these applications of standard language linguistically educate and that is why we can talk about language culture and cultured users. However, I need to emphasize that in the Albanian language terrain, the language of literature does not appear that open and pure, whereas the language of information has remained closed and normatively ingrained, thus making the standard system, which his given through these two application hierarchical structures, cherish continuous contemporariness.

EARLY DOCTRINAL VARIANTS IN A CONTEXT OF THE HISTORY OF ALBANIAN WRITTEN LITERATURE

Author(s): Evalda Paci / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2021

The periodization of the history of Albanian written literature is rightly initiated by taking into account the contributions that do not constitute only separate written documents in terms of content and textual completeness. Such texts have been carefully considered by critics and scholars of Albanian written literature, but also by historians and researchers of the earliest written sources that shed light on the history of our nation, as well as on the role of personalities who are presented as delivering a specific writing culture in our language, are part of a historical mosaic that was marked significantly and by their contribution, both concrete and unpaid.

MAN, AND THE ATYPICAL PHENOMENON IN DRITËRO AGOLLI’S WORK: LOONY PEOPLE IN HIS PROSE

Author(s): Shaban Sinani / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2021

In the scientific and para scientific settings from a decade and a half it has and still is being discussed about the character of the literary creation of the last half-century, including here the literary work of the writers of the generation of the 1960s, in the constellation of which, Dritero Agolli plays an important role. It can well be said that this discussion is still permeated by political terminology; what was this literary work called? Revolutionary literature, engaged literature, literature of idealist writers, socialist literature, party belonging literature, social realism literature or simply, ironically and contemptuously said, socio-realism literature.

Organizace tisku učebnic v Čechách. Přizpůsobení jedné tereziánské reformy

Author(s): Claire Madl / Language(s): Czech Issue: 01/2017

In the context of Maria Theresa’s educational reforms, the article analyses the introduction of new school textbooks in Bohemia as an attempt to build a new type of state economic enterprise. For the first twenty years after compulsory education was introduced in 1774, a balance had to be struck for the publication of textbooks between standardization and adaptability, in order to over-come the obstacles and conflicts inherent in the reforms. In implementing the reforms it was thus necessary to deviate from certain fundamental principles – dirigism, uniformity and centralization. An economic system based on the awarding of privileges was faced with the challenge of meeting public order on an unprecedented scale. Moreover, an economic model for publishing schoolbooks had to be devised that could function as an instrument of social policy while remaining financially sustainable. The new publishing house had to ensure regular high -volume distribution of the new product through-out a territory that lacked any commercial infrastructure in the field of bookselling.

The Power of Cohesion: Unlocking Informativity in Texts

Author(s): Aynur Rzayeva / Language(s): English Issue: 8/2023

This article delves into the intricacies of literary texts, shedding light on their distinct characteristics. Within this domain, cohesion and coherence are two pivotal components shaping literary works' essence. Literary text and discourse are intricately intertwined, forming a unified entity within language. Furthermore, the concept of informativity assumes a paramount role in the genesis of textual content. Coherence is a central pillar of literary expression, embodying the seamless integration of logical and semantic elements within the literary text. This harmonious union is primarily facilitated through the application of cohesive ties, which function as the connective threads binding the various facets of the text together. The nuanced deployment of diverse forms of cohesive relations enhances the overall effectiveness and leaves a lasting impression on the reader, thus contributing to the text's literary richness and impact.

he author examines the clientele of the Bratislava booksellers Anton Löwe and Philip Ulrich Mahler in the context of the Hungarian book trade from 1770 to 1800. By analysing the extant correspondence of Michal Institoris Mošovský, a protestant pastor in Bratislava, she was able to partially identify one segment of their customer base – protestant clergymen. For many years these members of the petty intelligentsia purchased from the Bratislava booksellers, in particular imported works by the German pietists and Enlightenment theologians. The author also investigated the social and geographical limits of the distribution process, some of the contact and distribution networks, and the identity of key figures.

Author(s): Zoltán Németh / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 1/2024

The subject of this paper is a particular type of literary pseudonym, the postmodern apocryphal pseudonym, which uses the name of a classical author and is exposed already at the moment of publication. The paper addresses the theoretical issues of authorship, the problematic of the author’s name, and also discusses the most important works of postmodern Hungarian literature with pseudonyms. The analysis of the works that can be classified as playful postmodern apocrypha leads to the conclusion that the type of pseudonym has a decisive influence on interpretation, and that it is, therefore, essential to distinguish the specific ways in which pseudonyms are used in the texts.

Nazwy własne w literaturze dziecięcej Rogera Hargreavesa w tłumaczeniu Marcina Wróbla

Author(s): Izabela Łuc / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2024

The subject of the analysis presented inthe article were personal names and toponyms de-rived from 42 stories by Roger Hargreaves addressedto children aged 4–6. The description of propernames in the British writer’s works is based on theassumption that the translator fully understood andfaithfully reflected the author’s intentions, takinginto account the functionality of the cycle of storiesand the age of the recipient, and that his goal was tofaithfully translate the senses contained in the seman-tics/sound of the created onyms. The study aimed tocapture the mechanisms of creating proper namesand the ways of introducing onyms into the text. The article also describes an onymic strategy con-sisting of a syntactic and semantic juxtaposition ofanthroponyms with toponyms which serves to com-plete the characterisation of the heroes and the con-struction of the literary world. The names extractedfrom Hargreaves’s works were considered in termsof their textual and semiotic structures, in both themotivational and pragmatic dimensions. A semantic-pragmatic analysis of the names showed that the on-yms invented by the author/translator were created asseries. Within the creative models used by him, thefollowing stand out due to their frequency: namesderived using suffixes, names created with the use ofan appellative used specifically for naming people –pan [mister], formations composed with the lexememały [small] and items created by means of onymi-sation.
