COMPUTER GAMES AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT OF PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN

COMPUTER GAMES AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT OF PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN

Author(s): Anastasija Mamutović,Marija Marković,Zorica Stanisavljević Petrović / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2020

The aim of the research was to examine the attitudes of educators towards the impact of computer games on the cognitive development of pre-school children. The research included 188 educators from pre-school institutions in the territory of Serbia. Educators' attitudes were analysed in relation to their level of education, place of work, age and years of service in order to identify tendencies that occur with changes in the structure of the research sample. The data obtained from the research were processed in the SPSS program, by using parametric statistics and the F test in the statistical analysis in order to determine the statistically significant differences in the attitudes of educators with respect to independent variables. A qualitative approach was used in the analysis of the survey results obtained through the use of questionnaire-scale, while the data were presented in tables and graphs. The research was carried out in two phases. The first phase of the research involved visiting the kindergartens to gain approval for the participation of the pre-school institution in the research and to deliver the instrument to RIUPU (Computer games at a pre-school age), which the educators subsequently completed. This phase was followed by the collection of instruments, as well as by the interpretation of the obtained data. The results of the research indicate that educators consider computer games to be a useful pedagogical tool that encourages the learning of pre-school children and reflects positively on logical reasoning, as well as on the enhancement of intellectual development and cognitive abilities. In regards to statistically significant differences in the respondents' attitudes compared to the independent variables, the results of the research show that educators with longer work experience evaluate more positively the impact of computer games on the cognitive development, as opposed to educators with shorter work experience. When the place of work variable was analysed, the research results show that educators in rural areas expressed a greater degree of agreement with the statement that the use of computer games in the context of kindergarten can contribute to the acquisition of declarative, procedural and strategic knowledge, compared to educators employed in suburban and urban areas.

Author(s): Nadia Idri,Rima Outmoune / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The Algerian educational system has gone through substantial changes and improvements since the adoption of the Competency-Based Approach (CBA) in 2003. There has been a continuous call for more investigation in the area of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to assure quality in education. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to explore the Algerian secondary school English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions about the use of ICT tools in their classes and their teaching practices. A mixed methodology based on questionnaires (N = 62) and interviews (N = 9) was used. Results revealed that EFL teachers are aware of the importance of using ICT in EFL contexts and they manifest positive attitudes towards its integration. The analysis also revealed that most teachers used computers and data projectors in their classes and this resulted in elevating the learners’ motivation. However, teachers enumerated a number of challenges they faced, namely lack of ICT tools, insufficient training, and support in using new technologies as well as of updates. Hence, continuous training on ICT integration, technical support, and ICT tools facility in Algerian secondary schools are highly recommended to overcome such challenges and allow professional development.

ENHANCING INTERACTIVITY IN GEOGRAPHY CLASS: FOSTERING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

ENHANCING INTERACTIVITY IN GEOGRAPHY CLASS: FOSTERING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Author(s): Kuo Hung Huang,Kai-Chi Hung,Ching-Ching Cheng / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2012

To develop students’ critical thinking abilities, teachers must lead students to engage in discussions and to reason within various points of view, while employing evidence to draw conclusions, make decisions or seek solutions. Computer mediates learning by providing students with visualizations of relevant subject content to facilitate their reflection on these experiences. The purpose of this study is to investigate how technology can enable students to develop critical thinking through technology-enhanced interactivity. A geography teacher and 62 grade seven students from two classes participated in the experiment. One class was taught using traditional methods whereas the instructional strategy of computer-mediated learning was adopted in the other. The findings showed that computer media designed for enhancing interactivity would facilitate teacher-pupil interaction and peer discussion, and consequently contributed to improve students’ comprehension of the geography curriculum content. In addition, the critical thinking ability of the high-achievement students was significantly improved.

THE IMPACT OF COVID 19 ON THE ROMANIAN MILITARY EDUCATION

THE IMPACT OF COVID 19 ON THE ROMANIAN MILITARY EDUCATION

Author(s): Maria Constantinescu,Vlad Ionuț Dumitrache / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2021

The Romanian military education system, like other military and civilian educational systems worldwide, has been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Sanitary measures such as lock-downs and the need to respect social distancing have had profound implications on the education process, such as the need to move the classes in hybrid and online formats, depending on national regulations and the severity of the outbreak in various countries and regions. The aim of this paper is to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of online compared to regular military education, with particular focus on the Romanian military education system. The pandemic has highlighted numerous failures in the current educational system, some of them specific to the online education (such as lack of training for teachers in designing online courses, lack of training for students on using e-learning technology) and some more general, related to the educational system itself (such as a lack of foresight and strategy related to e-learning, whose implementation had to be done on emergency basis, with the associated problems). At the same time, the COVID 19 pandemic has brought to the public and decision maker’s attention the undeniable advantages of e-learning, both in the civilian and military education systems. In the second chapter, the paper offers potential solutions and forward steps into implementing online procedures, techniques and tools to further develop online education and training in the field of military education that could be of use in a post pandemic world. The main conclusion of the paper is that digitization is a priority in a globalized world and online education as part of it has expanded to the circumstances of the Covid-19 crisis. The Romanian military education system should strive to correlate the needs of students, teaching staffs and institutions and to integrate the resulting effects will lead to a more innovative and effective driven learning process.

E-LEARNING IN THE POST-PANDEMIC FUTURE

E-LEARNING IN THE POST-PANDEMIC FUTURE

Author(s): Alba-Iulia Catrinel POPESCU / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2021

In 2020, education has been hardly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of schools and universities around the world have been forced to close their doors, millions of pupils and students have faced the risk of interrupting their educational path and millions of other teachers have faced the risk of academic freeze. However, the current pandemic, similar to other great plagues that preceded it, through the medical crisis it triggered, has forced states and societies to adapt, to find solutions, to innovate, to progress. A solution to such educational crisis has been the development and large-scale implementation of the e-learning. Considered, until the beginning of the pandemic, an alternative system for traditional education, e-learning has turned into an "essential-learning", becoming the saving solution that has taken the academic year out of the impasse. The change in the status of digital education has led to the development of a new industry, known as ed-tech, and has highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of such an education system. On the one hand stand the advantages of unlimited access to information, the qualitative increase of the teaching performance, the diversity of means of graphic expression and mass media, the development of computer management skills and of graphic editing of teaching materials, advantages shared both by the teaching staff and students. On the other hand, poverty, underdevelopment and technical problems, inherent in the process of data transmission, risk to deepen the gap between the poor and the rich of this world. Therefore, to what extent will e-learning be able to maintain its "essential-learning" status even after the end of the pandemic? What are the strengths and weaknesses of digital education?

GROUP SOLIDARITY FOR STUDENTS THROUGH DISCONNECTING FROM NEW MEDIA

GROUP SOLIDARITY FOR STUDENTS THROUGH DISCONNECTING FROM NEW MEDIA

Author(s): Alina Mărgăriţoiu,Simona Eftimie / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The purpose of our paper is to invite to a critical reflection about the negative consequences of using new media by students during online classes, situation that unconsciously could of contribute to their addiction. More, sometimes, young people manifest their tendency to relativize their addiction on media or to integrate their addition through common behaviours, making it trivial. Thinking that students’ addition on new media indicate the lack of personal discipline, we believe that one of today teacher responsibilities is to find strategies and create learning contexts that help them to develop self-discipline. In consequence, we have proposed a pedagogic experiment – “online disconnection” and group solidarity – to our students (Sciences of Education, specialization Pedagogy). They have been kept a reflexive journal during experimental period. Through significant results we have found some advantages of their online disconnection: more time to do enjoyable and useful activities, a positive affective estate, re-discovering the pleasure for reading, raising motivation for specialty literature and gradual detachment from new media addiction, group solidarity.

EDUCATION 3.0: BLOCKCHAIN-BACKED MOOCS

Author(s): Virgil Paraschiveanu,Geomina Richardson,Roxana Voicu-Dorobanțu / Language(s): English Issue: 03/2020

MOOCs ability to provide valuable skills and competencies at a fraction of the cost of other educational offers, in a fraction of the time, and from the comfort of one’s own home, has proven to be a promising business reference to digital transformation, as applied in higher education. This paper overviews the impact of blockchain features, such as the trendy self-sovereign identity adding precious disruptive value along MOOCs value chains, especially around content acquisition, digital marketing and monetization, as well as facilitating acquisition and transfer of credentials in a digital trust-focused environment. A sound, trackable and protective digital identity has been long considered a needed asset, whereas the owner of the credentials, either the university, individual or employer has full control over the data that is shared across the educational ecosystem, on a case-by-case basis. The article also aspires at critically observing whether using blockchain tech for courseware aggregation and delivery constitutes a sound business case, as well as a worthy exploration for intrinsic learning motivation and an enhancement to higher education value chain. Secondly, blockchain and the self-sovereign identity offer benefits for the education authoring providers in particular and token-based monetization models for OER education. Blockchain has the potential to disrupt significantly current business models, by facilitating legally binding smart-contracts, helping streamline the credentials' processes, protecting the viability and legitimacy of education records as well as increasing the effectiveness of educational agregators. Reliably easy and quick to transfer credentials are essential for the labor force to be able to swiftly introduce newly acquired skills and competencies to the real business. In the same time, education providers are incentivized by an education governance model that enables better management and sustainability.

INTRODUCTION TO SMART EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION TO SMART EDUCATION

Author(s): Ioan Vlașin / Language(s): English Issue: 03/2020

New technology-inspired terms such as Smart City, Smart Education or Smart Society are being circulated lately. The usual approach to achieving them is aimed only at introducing smart technology, not a comprehensive analysis based on systems’ theory, to which specific elements allow them to be intelligent, autonomous and self-programmable. A short analysis of what the term smart means, how it can be applied to humans and how education should be, if we consider these things, is a brief review of the work. From the analysis carried out here it results another approach, much more natural and truly effective called Smart Education. Classical education does not take into account the fact that man is an intelligent, self-programmable, autonomous and integrable system, which is why it does not report realistically and respectfully to the pupil, its intervention is brutal, even traumatizing. At the age of individualization, it ignores the real, profound needs of man and works only as a cultural programming tool. It does not really develop competence as a quality participation, but only certain skills etc. It does not consider the real integration of the person itself and in overpower systems because it does not explicitly pursue the development of character and preservation of integrity, the basic elements to be trustworthy. Smart education does not imply the introduction of modern technology in education, but its superior recovery as an environment, according to M. McLuhan's approaches that allows for a retrieval and self-development of man as a smart system. It is built from a new, transcultural perspective based on systems’ theory, complemented by the analysis of how smart systems work and taking into account the three types of human programming. In full accord with the nature of man, looking at the most general possible perspective, it supports its individualization and integration, giving the human (organizations, communities, etc.) the possibility of deployment from cultures and their higher recovery. In order for education to be truly a smart one, the approach and tools used within it must lead to the conscious construction and management of all components of an intelligent system, adapted and capable of supporting any entity that wants to learn, from one person to a nation. Thus, education can be greatly improved and supported entities can become self-aware and act more intelligently than using classical education.

THE PROJECT TECHNOLOGY AS A MEANS OF IMPROVING QUALITY IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Author(s): Anna V. Butova,Olesya V. Kisel,Angelina I. Dubskikh / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2020

Innovative teaching technologies are becoming popular in education. A good degree of integration of academic and professional education, ensuring the training process taking into account the requirements in a new educational paradigm is the reason. Under the circumstances Nosov Magnitigorsk State Technical University aims to provide the required professional staff for the needs of the regional sphere by updating the target, substantive and technological conditions of the educational process with the introduction of innovative educational technologies. The project technology or the project method is considered to be such an innovative technology. Under the technology of project training, we mean the system of interrelated actions, conditions, requirements for the subjects’ pedagogical activity, the central element of which is a project or image for a future result. This method focuses on the student’s personal development and significant professionally oriented activities; allows you to choose an individual pace of work on the project; combines all the baggage of knowledge, skills and abilities that a student can apply in various situations, and helps to learn basic knowledge of a foreign language and expand it if necessary. Work on the project is a powerful tool for enhancing students' cognitive activity: they see the final result - a product that they have created themselves – and can assess its practical significance. In addition, such a creative kind of activity stimulates professional self-determination.

E-LEARNING AND IN-CLASS LEARNING SYSTEMS FOR UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING STUDENTS: PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL ASPECTS

Author(s): Svetlana Pozdnyakova,Natalia R. KIRICHENKO,Yulia Savinova / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2020

The aim of this work is to describe the most effective tools of e-learning and in-class learning systems for undergraduate engineering students. Experience shows that today’s students perceive and assimilate educational material in a completely different way than it was 15 or even 10 years ago. In this article the authors would like to touch upon the main features of perception the information by the modern generation, as the old teaching methods, when the material was absorbed in a simple and quick way, are not effective anymore. Besides while teaching a foreign language for occupational purposes (LOP) it must be taken into account that methodology of teaching General Language differs from that of LOP. The purpose of teaching a foreign language in this case is dictated by the professional orientation of students, thus methodologists and teachers of foreign languages are faced with a task to develop special training programs that meet all requirements of a specific working group. These factors should be kept in mind while compiling educational programs. The research shows that in comparison with traditional forms of education, e-learning requires the use of modern gadgets, the usage of which entails changes in the system of forms and methods of teaching. It should be noted that e-learning does not contradict other forms of organization of the educational process and is easily integrated with it. All in all, new methodology must be implemented to meet the educational needs in a new era of technology. In the article the authors show that combination of e-learning with face-to-face classes allows to optimize the process of learning, makes this process more effective and easier.

USE OF E-LEARNING RESOURCES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING PROCESS AT TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY

USE OF E-LEARNING RESOURCES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING PROCESS AT TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY

Author(s): Yulia Savinova,Natalia MOKROVA / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2020

The paper deals with the possibilities of applying information and communication technologies, which have become widespread in all spheres of human activities, including education. Various approaches with the use of e-learning resources in the process of foreign language teaching are described in detail, as well as the key concepts of e-learning, its main challenges and techniques. The paper focuses on advantages and drawbacks of the e-learning system in comparison with the traditional system of education. In view of advanced educational standards, the importance of actions, aimed at enhancing the level of foreign language proficiency is emphasized. The authors examine the mechanisms of e-learning resources integration in the process of education. The central focus of the paper is the Moodle platform, which has gained wide popularity in the e-learning environment. Moodle is an open, free of charge learning environment with a user-friendly management system. It allows to cover a large number of learners, which is the most relevant for universities. The present platform organizes the process of foreign language teaching, and using various methods of control, effectively manages this process. Moreover, it fosters skills of students’ independent work. However, in spite of all advantages of this platform, it has some drawbacks, such as significant financial implications in the implementation of the resource, inconsistency with the users’ query, difficulty of planning, uneven development of informational technologies and insufficient monitoring by university teachers. The efficiency of the isolated use of electronic educational resources has been questioned in the paper. The authors come to the conclusion that such method of education is not always productive in the pedagogical aspect, as it does not provide direct interaction between teachers and learners, which is especially important when learning a foreign language. The authors suggest undertaking specific actions to address the problem. One of them is to combine informational technologies and traditional methods of education. The authors are convinced that a blended learning flexibility model enhances the degree of learners’ autonomy, helps to use contact hours more rationally. The paper also addresses the perspectives of using an educational e-resource Moodle in the modern educational process.
