Wojciecha Jagielskiego reporterska opowieść o współczesnym świecie

Author(s): Monika Wiszniowska / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

Wojciech Jagielski is one of the most interesting European reporters of the last decades,a disciple of Ryszard Kapuściński, a careful observer of conflicts afflicting Africa, Central Asiaand Caucasus, a witness to breakthrough moments in history (though from the European reader’spoint of view they may appear to be rather exotic). The essence of his literary reportage is realisedin its “anti‑mediality”,primarily distinguished by the reflection inscribed in the text, and thequestions which the writer repeatedly asks: about the role of a human being as an individual inthe world or about the possibility of understanding and describing the considerable, sometimesinsurmountable cultural differences by linguistic means. Due to the use of individual experienceand the exquisitely built narrative, the writer turns his characters’ everyday life into the universalstories about the contemporary world.

Sprzeczności, niepokoje, interferencje — czyli zobaczyć sens sztuki

Author(s): Roman Maciuszkiewicz / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The author of the article starts his deliberations with a recollection of Grigorij Gurdżijew andhis conception of art. As if under Gurdżijew’s influence, he reflects on the most profound senseof art. He reminds the readers about the revaluations which occured in art in the 20th century, bydrawing their attention to the divergence from the subject and figurativeness in painting and to theredefinitions of the category of beauty. The author also devotes a lot of attention to the influenceof surrealists. Simultaneously, he notices that crossing the borders, so important in art, is not an“invention” of the last century. Many distinguished artists of bygone eras, who were importantto the author, were balancing on the verge of objectivity and magic (coincidence and mystery),life and art. The author pays special attention to these artists who conduct their artistic search bymeans of exploitation of different art forms — painting and literature at the same time.

Śmierć — być in czy out? Między potrzebą sensu a doświadczeniem absurdu

Author(s): Monika Malczak / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article is an attempt to present the discourse of death in philosophy and literature. Itseems that understanding of what death is and where it can be found, may be arrived at be-tween the extremes of searching for sense and experiencing the absurdity of death. Such purelyradical views are rarely expressed, hence, the problem with taking any definite attitude towardsdeath ensues. For between these two extremes a whole array of approaches to dying and waysof overcoming fear and grief expands; fear of what is unknown, grief at what is lost — namely, life. According to the author of the article, it is, above all, the mystery of this phenomenon thatthreatens the members of modern culture and their ability to think rationally.

O możliwości odbudowy sensu życia (Zapiski dla zjawy Jerzego Stempowskiego)

Author(s): Małgorzata Krakowiak / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The article addresses the problem of maintaining (or reconstructing) the meaning of life afterone had experienced a personal crisis. The author illustrates this problem with fragments of JerzyStempowski’s biography recorded in his texts (especially, in his private journal of mourning —untypical for Stempowski — writing of which he treated as means of his own psychotherapy). She is trying to prove to the contemporary reader that the notes of a man representing the worldwhich no longer exists, include exceptionally valid and universal observations. From the chasmmarked by illness, death of a beloved one, home loss and country bereavement and, as a result, the feeling of everything being taken away from him, Stempowski manages to emerge preservinghis human dignity. Life after all the hardship becomes meaningful again due to the strenuousprocess of returning to the public and artistic activity.
