Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to present the discourse of death in philosophy and literature. Itseems that understanding of what death is and where it can be found, may be arrived at be-tween the extremes of searching for sense and experiencing the absurdity of death. Such purelyradical views are rarely expressed, hence, the problem with taking any definite attitude towardsdeath ensues. For between these two extremes a whole array of approaches to dying and waysof overcoming fear and grief expands; fear of what is unknown, grief at what is lost — namely, life. According to the author of the article, it is, above all, the mystery of this phenomenon thatthreatens the members of modern culture and their ability to think rationally.
