But a paradigm aimed at the search for interaction between cultures – transculturalism is emerging. Accordingly, within it, conditions arise for the appearance of phenomena of a single, rather than general, order. A handful of words have come to the forefront in global higher education and media, including globalization, internationalization, de-westernization, among others. These concepts and their application to universities and media may have slightly different implications depending on the locale. Nevertheless, for communication programs graduating future media workers these concepts are likely to spark important considerations in the development of the curriculum. In the case of the UAE, both the higher education and media landscapes are advancing rapidly. This has created a situation where many media outlets are sprouting up, creating original content and seeking a larger share of the regional audiences, and where schools are adding programs to meet the training needs. This paper explores the appropriateness of Western textbooks given a Global South context, as well as identifies and attempts to address several key terms of increasing importance in both the higher education and media landscapes. As any instructor who has taught introductory media and communication courses will know, it is often difficult to find a ‘required’ textbook that exactly ‘fits the bill’. All textbooks are not created (or greeted) equally in the global higher education landscape. For those who are teaching in the United States and Britain the textbooks are full of pertinent and timely examples, along with stories that help illustrate numerous points and terms. As the media industry matures globally, educational learning facilities follow suit and western-based introductory textbooks are increasingly becoming less appropriate for use in other regions.

It can be said that discourses developed based on the concept of “culture” that has multiple definitions have been reshaped by the conditions resulting from postmodernism and globalization. In order to define the conceptual problem of culture, it is essential that we recognize/define such elements as belief, knowledge, stance and intuition that communities transfer from one generation to another in the historical process as well. Nowadays, due to globalization, no culture and human society in the world thoroughly and indifferently lives in a homogeneous integrity of a single culture. An advantage of postmodernism is that even minor cultural structures in which people are involved have gained importance. In this context, almost everything has begun to be perceived as culture. The differentiation of existent concepts of culture and cultural change in the broadest sense is a constant factor of human civilization and it occurs anywhere and at any time. The only constant rules/principles of life and cultures have been the concepts of change and continuity. The concept of Kitsch has a complex structure in terms of scope and content. It is not easy to assign only one meaning to Kitsch as a concept or to find an exact equivalent of it. When we just examine the literal meaning of this word, it can be said that it is used as an adjective meaning vain, of vulgar taste, banal and boring used for productions or it is used to classify art which is seen as an inferior copy of existent things. Other concepts that come with the concept of Kitsch are cultural degeneration, upper class tastes, lower-class tastes, the concepts of superior culture and sub-culture. In this context, “kitsch” means more than solely its artistic use, it has got other more meanings in other concepts.

This paper will discuss oppositions between West and East as well as the discontinued dialogue between the two civilizations, particularly after the latest terrorist actions. The logic of stereotype thinking of both sides contributes to this gap widening: Edward Said’s story on “western colonialism” and conscious western manipulation with the picture of oriental world” as well as Peter Bernard Louis’ consideration that non-existence of “functional democracy” in Islamic society to these days is not incidental The image of the Other in this context by adding negative accusing tones hastily turns into image of the enemy. Such proclamation is a dangerous social occurrence leading the mass to believe that the others are really hostile. In fact this concerns erroneous image about the Others, perverse reaction of separate trends in Islamic world over Western world as well as such terrors that Western “democracy” imposes over Islamic world. The dialogue between cultures might be possible if Basam Tibi’s massage is heard, that is, “Islam must recognize secular values of Western modernity”, but the “West must acknowledge equality between religions”. However, this is not sufficient to avoid the new type of terrorist war between “crusaders” from Occident and “jihaders” from Orient. Their conflicts are unavoidably connected with the process of globalisation and Hard and Negri’s concept of a new Empire.

Institutions of higher education address the challenges of globalization by increasing their internationalization. This paper addresses the issue of consumers’ decision-making in higher education, based on a literature review. The aim of this paper is to formulate a theoretical model, identifying and systematizing factors, influencing the high school graduates’ decision to study abroad. The proposed model consists of 114 factors, divided into six groups. The model allows the assessment of each factor and its influence on the student’s decision, as well as the assessment of the factors’ interactions. The model can be used by the stakeholders of the higher education system, as to define the policies and strategies of individual institutions.

It is noted that existing processes of globalization in the modern world have contributed to the intensification of the processes of knowledge of universal legal values. The content of human rights category, forming the basis of personal legal status, is specified. Africa’s quest for sustainable development has been marred by the crises of identity issues and relevance. Globalization in a multicultural context has never been Africa’s problem. Globalization has it negative side, but Africa must key into this heterogenous nature of globalization in order for Africa as a continent to move forward. Globalization has a positive role to play in Africa’s quest for development in terms of technological and information transfer from developed countries. No continent can operate in isolation politically, socially, culturally, scientifically, technologically and economically. The Globalized world needs what Wangari Maathai (2009) calls “the global partnership for development”. The development crises in Africa need to evolve by a viable alternative of indigenous development oriented ideology whereby the issues of ignorance, corruption, economic woes, ineffective leadership, and political instability in Africa are strictly tackled. Africa as a continent must be committed to solve her development crises through equitable distribution of human and natural resources. Africa must engage in technological development in order to meet up with the rest of the world. This paper appropriates and appreciates the deep logical and philosophical insight offered by Wangari Maathai (2009:274) who believes that “it is fundamental that Africa’s leaders create the conditions under which their peoples gain confidence, dignity, a sense of self worth-will the citizens themselves actively participating in this effort”.

This paper reconsiders the complex and somewhat ambivalent relationships between the cinematographic image and the globalized world as it is characterized by flows (of images, among other flows). For this purpose, the paper examines different aesthetic forms that contemporary cinema gives to the image-flow – taking into account the editing as well as the framing resources –, based on a multiple corpus of both blockbusters and author films. The analysis aims at bringing out the poetic and affective effects of these representations of the flow. In particular, the paper suggests that contemporary cinema offers a new tragic vision of the flow, which it links to the melancholic or depressive affect.

In this time of ever-accelerating migration and cultural globalization, the production of Anglophone literature and the field of literary studies reflect the profound influence of these processes. Among the group of transnational and multicultural authors who write literary texts that address these processes is Kiran Desai, whose personal background and literary output exemplify the growing presence and importance of transnational writing. Drawing on the studies of Vijay Mishra and Paul Jay about diaspora and globalization, this paper discusses Kiran Desai’s novel The Inheritance of Loss (2006) in light of the colonial legacy of displacement and the resultant divided identity. Through an examination of the novel’s main themes centered on the impact of the U.S. capitalist empire and English colonization in India, this analysis explores the fragmentation of values and the crisis of individual and collective identity in an ever-changing, globalizing world. Spanning continents, and switching back and forth in time and viewpoints, Desai’s narrative reveals the ambivalence of the characters’ adjustment to the inexorable economic and social demands that leave them trapped between tradition and transition, colonialism and nationalism, diaspora and cosmopolitanism. This paper argues that the complex interplay of local custom, migration, postcolonial conflicts and diasporic existence both bring together and separate seemingly disparate worlds and characters. It also investigates how tensions between the colonial hegemony of the past, family aspirations, and community expectations affect the characters who are suspended between assimilation and resistance in the struggle to assert their personal and national identities.

Globalization is a highly complex and multifaceted phenomenon that has large influence on modern society. Globalization is today interpreted not only as a paradigm of the establishment of the common world market, but also from the position of cultural and ideological reality (Čečuk 2002). Croatia, as the 28th member of the European Union, has been under the strong influence of integration process over the last twenty years. The motto of EU since 2000 is “United in Diversity” and the meaning of this message is the integration of all Europeans into the EU “to work for peace and prosperity, while at the same time being enriched by the continent’s many different cultures, traditions and languages”. The idea of integration is strongly linked to the idea of multiculturalism. Social sciences and humanities are inevitably contextualized by globalization, integration and multiculturalism nowadays as the ubiquitous social processes. The topic that explores this paper is in what extent have Croatian professional and scientific articles from the field of social sciences and humanities processed integration, globalization and multiculturalism and their interrelationships, and whether they applied interdisciplinary scientific approaches in the period from 2013 till today.

This article reflects on the notion of ‘national literature’ and the symbolic realm of the ‘nation’ in the context of globalization. The main goal is to redefine ‘national literature’ in such a way as to render this concept functional – in terms of both theory and interpretation – with regard to the problems of globalization and ‘world literature’. Rutkiewicz proposes that ‘Polish literature’ ought to be understood as ‘literature in Poland’ (with reference to Kinga Dunin’s well-known distinction), whereby the former is expanded to signify the latter. He also reflects on the ostensibility of linguistic and cultural transfer and what that might imply in terms of hermeneutics. Examining the hermeneutic aspects of ‘postmodernity’ and ‘the imaginary community,’ Rutkiewicz draws on concepts such as Malraux’s ‘imaginary museum’ or Themerson and Walcott’s notion of identity being either a verb or a noun.
