New Messengers: Short Narratives in Plays by Michael Frayn, Tom Stoppard and August Wilson

New Messengers: Short Narratives in Plays by Michael Frayn, Tom Stoppard and August Wilson

Author(s): Tomáš Kačer / Language(s): English

The publication introduces the “new messenger” as a specific type of dramatic character, a follower of the conventional „messenger“ whose presence in traditional drama serves several purposes, which the new messenger also fulfills. What makes it different is the fact that it is not an independent character, but the role it has is assumed by major characters in contemporary mainstream drama, such as journalists and reporters, politicians and their assistants, scientists and teachers, detectives and police officers, historical characters, philosophers and literary scholars, etc. The publication provides examples of the use of this type in a series of case studies of plays by two British playwrights Michael Frayn and Tom Stoppard, and an African-American playwright August Wilson.

Śluby. Poemat dramatyczny w trzech aktach

Author(s): Karolina Goławska / Language(s): Polish

In his 1907 review in the Słowo Polskie daily published in Lwów, the Polish writer Kornel Makuszyński ventured a tentatively critical judgment on The Vows, suggesting that appropriate distancing might be prerequisite when evaluating Przybyszewski’s work. That condition seems to have been met today: the passing of over a hundred years since the original publication has created not only a temporal but also a cognitive distance. A re-edition of the play offers an opportunity to read it anew. The word “read” is key here, since The Vows is by all means a literary text.

Author(s): Ružica Aščić / Language(s): Croatian

The dramatic trilogy Beehives by the award-winning author Ružica Aščić places in the centre of each play one family with their key problems. The protagonists want more from their life than just passively going with the flow, but their endeavours face the opposition of their community that pushes their desires in the area of unacceptable. Because of the circumstances the characters become apathetic, and too weak to change their situation. The atmosphere of emptiness and hopelessness, realised through apparently empty dialogues, emanates strongly from the texts, and wraps the reader like cobweb. The plays show a reverse gradation of the lack of willpower, and weakness, beginning with the first one, where the desire is clearly articulated but hits the wall repeatedly. In the second play, there is no desire anymore, just the sense of impossibility of realising any closeness. The third play is dominated by the general prohibition of love and humaneness. Ružica Aščić creates Antonioni-like atmosphere of desert where one has difficulty with finding a landmark, not to mention an oasis. Ružica Aščić was born in 1987. She published the short story collection The Good Days of Violence (2016). For the plays It Grows Inside of Me and Beehives she won the »Marin Držić« Award. She has published short stories in numerous Croatian magazines and one of them was included in the anthology Without Doors, Without Knocking: New Croatian Writers of Fiction.

The cultural heritage of Transition was at the center of discussions about the memory, the clash between the image of freedom and the market mechanisms of governing culture and art and the role of the media.

The publication, created to celebrate the jubilee of Romance studies at the University of Lodz, is a polyphonic reflection on the art of living / surviving, reviving. The chosen topic deals with the issues of a breakthrough, a reevaluation of the current modus vivendi. It also discusses the issue of relations with time, the themes of passing away, returning, and duration. From the perspective of literary studies, this topic was captured as the art of life understood as a set of intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral attitudes of an individual towards existence in specific communities and in specific historical and socio-political conditions. The scientific character of the publication is ensured by an organized choice of content aimed at analyzing the aforementioned points, based on a wide corpus of texts from various eras and countries, and the use of multiple methodologies supported by a carefully selected bibliography. Since the monograph addresses the needs of a wide range of readers (students, literary scholars, literature lovers who speak Romance languages), it has the potential to exert considerable social influence.

François de Curel et la crise du drame : de la « pièce bien faite » à la « pièce bien défaite »

François de Curel et la crise du drame : de la « pièce bien faite » à la « pièce bien défaite »

Author(s): Tomasz Kaczmarek / Language(s): French

Curel’s works give tangible proof of a “rupture”, and not of a crisis of the drama, allowing the advent of a more open and free form ― in a word, more rhapsodic. It constitutes a departure from the traditional dramatic structure which is based on an ever-increasing tension that goes from the exposition through a myriad of adventures to the culmination of the action. As we remove the dynamic and logical attribute from it, the characters will not have their active function supposed to push the plot forward, either. In this context, the French playwright breaks the unity of time for the “benefit of temporal gaps between past and present” while emphasizing the drama experienced by the characters to the detriment of the agonistic action. It is in this way that these witnesses rather than agents of action no longer resemble acting heroes, but the unfortunate figures who incessantly and in an almost absolute passivity ruminate on their existential distress. Thus, “diegesis” replaces “mimesis”; plot progression being replaced by soul evolution.

Lucjusz Anneusz Seneka. Herkules szalony

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The Madness of Hercules is one of the tragedies written by the Roman philosopher and politician Seneca the Younger, who was Nero's tutor and advisor. He spent eight years in exile in Corsica during the reign of Claudius, and briefly exerted an influence over the ruler after Nero's rise to power. However, he was ultimately accused of plotting against Claudius and was forced to commit suicide in 65 AD. The Madness of Hercules is a work depicting a hero who devoted his entire life to fighting monsters in defence of humanity, but who was unable to protect his own wife and children from the monster within himself. Under the influence of the mad frenzy by his stepmother Juno, who hates him, Hercules brutally murders his family and then comes back to his senses and has to live with the crime he committed. The tragedy can be read as an allusion to the reign of Nero, but in essence it touches on the universal theme of evil and madness that lies within each of us, and asks what the basis of humanity really is.

Opowiedzieć historię. Polska dramaturgia współczesna po 2006 roku

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Publication ”To Tell a Story. Polish Contemporary Dramaturgy after 2006” is an attempt to analyse the historical narratives in the newest Polish theatre and drama. Starting from the classical canon of memory studies, shaped by researchers such as Pierre Nora, Marianne Hirsch, Jan and Aleida Assmann or Maurice Halbwachs, young theatre researchers look at methods, reasons, aims and effects of including historical and memory narratives into performances and dramas. Due to the variety of research approaches and topics undertaken by both the authors of articles and theatre artists, the issue of telling the history in Polish theatre and drama was treated in a cross-sectional area. The book deals with the themes of peasant stories, stories related to the place (memory spaces), memory transfers between generations, or feminist revision of history, among others. Using examples of selected dramatic texts and plays (not only representing dramatic theatre, but also musical, puppet or physical theatre), the dramaturgical conventions and narrative strategies employed by theatre makers that influence the construction of stories about the past are analysed.

The play launches an important debate about the roles and functions of teachers, about teaching practices and the need to update them to the digital era and its implications, about the integration of children with special education needs, about the increasingly problematic relationships between parents and teachers, about the ever-present bureaucracy, about the system. Education is seen as an ongoing struggle for authority. The play was developed following an elaborate research and documentation process. For several months, playwright Mihaela Michailov and theatre director Radu Apostol, interviewed dozens of teachers, education specialists, school inspectors, representatives from the Ministry of Education and theorists, to understand in depth the complexity of the problems they face and the solutions that can be activated.
