John Galsworthy and the P. E. N.; VALLEY OF THE SHADOW

Author(s): Hermon Ould,John Galsworthy / Language(s): English Issue: 02/1933

At the Ninth International Congress of the P. E. N. in Holland, Dr. Milan Curcin proposed that John Galsworthy should remain President of the international committee sine die. His proposal receiveld the backing of the whole congress, but was resisted by Mr. Galsworthy himself. In my report of the proceedings I find these words: »Finally, Mr. Galsworthy consented to be President for the coming year, leaving the future to take care of itself«. That was in 1931. Galsworthy continued in 'Office till the day of his death, and we who have worked with him since the inception of the P. E. N. in 1921 are wondering how the future will take care of itself.

Vargjet e Ovidit në veprën e Bogdanit

Vargjet e Ovidit në veprën e Bogdanit

Author(s): Ilir Breca / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 19/2020

This article investigates the presence of Ovid’s verses in the writing of Bogdani. This phenomenon manifests itself as a paraphrasing of familiar Latin verses in one of the best-known texts of early Albanian literature. This paraphrasing is interpreted as poetic hypertext, demonstrating Bogdani’s aesthetic self-awareness in exploiting the texts of a former age. The interpretation thus focuses on an investigation of the links between Bogdani and Ovid, seeking the aesthetic function of such inter-textuality.

Towards a Theory of the Lyric

Towards a Theory of the Lyric

Author(s): Jonathan Culler / Language(s): English Issue: 22/2021

This introduction to the project Jonathan Culler’s Theory of the Lyric (2015) questions the general validity of two extant models of the lyric poem—the poem as expression of the intense experience of the poet and the poem as the discourse of a fictional speaker in a situation that should be reconstructed – arguing that both models direct readers attention away from what is most distinctive about the language of the poem. Focusing on the tension between the fictional and ritualistic elements of the poem, such as rhythmical and phonetic patterning, it also discusses distinctive aspects of the use of verb tenses in the English lyric.

The object of this article is the poetry of Dije Demiri - Frangu which is distinguished as an original voice of the Albanian literature. Focusing on the vocabulary or thematic, lexical, and stylistic register of Dije D. Frangu's poetry, it was identified the richness of the lexicon, the figuration, and the motives. The book of love

The book of love

Author(s): Emin Z. Emini / Language(s): English Issue: 23/2021

Flora Brovina, with this collection, builds her poetic homeland, which cannot but become our homeland in its national dimensions. It is not only geographic, but it is also the boundless space of love. Even enslaved (as it was in the earliest stages of the author’s poetic creativity), this homeland is a sacred hearth. It is an Albanian land created by the gods, a house that strives with all its strength, energies, and knowledge, tries with effort and sacrifice, tries, therefore, with all its being, not asking for any price to put a roof over his head.

Eroticism transfigured into metaphor

Eroticism transfigured into metaphor

Author(s): Luan Topçiu / Language(s): English Issue: 23/2021

Rita Petro lives holiness as a state of pure natural being, unchangeable by the intricacies of the metaphysical and social order. The truth of mystic love, so complicated at first sight, has arisen from this primordial hypostasis, which means the paradise state of primitiveness and innocence of primitive man (Eve and Adam) created by instinct, play in a pure state. Its return is an attempt to understand the language of love, understand the metaphor of eroticism, and integrate them into a whole.

The revolt and freedom poems

The revolt and freedom poems

Author(s): Halil Matoshi / Language(s): English Issue: 23/2021

The poet Sibel Halimi sings like a woman, and this is not just an antidote to the manly song, but a protest. Freedom in the game proves her being a woman - liberation of mind and body. The monumental in Sibel's poetry is not any woman who applies to feminists as a social movement, but the free and aware woman of her freedom, therefore also responsible. She is a poet of freedom.

Autorytet i autorytetka?

Autorytet i autorytetka?

Author(s): Helena Teleżyńska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 14 (17)/2024

This paper traces the reception of two towering figures of Ancient Greek literature, namely Homer and Sappho. Although both are viewed as epitomes of poetic talent, the fact that Sappho is a woman makes her stand out in the literary tradition and as a female poet she is perceived as an extraordinary phenomenon. The analysis of the reception of Sappho in antiquity, especially in Hellenistic and early Imperial epigrams in which her gender is often underlined, aims to show that while both Homer and Sappho are authority figures for subsequent generations of poets, they are not regarded in the same way. At the same time, Sappho’s unique position as a woman in the literary world results in a double effect: on the one hand, she is confined to the realm of poetry written by women, which almost amounts to a distinct category of literature, but on the other hand, the position makes it possible for her to become the fundamental literary figure and inspiration that she has been for women writers, artists, and activists for centuries, and even millennia, afterwards.
