The article concerns the role of Roman law in the education of Polish lawyers. The author compares the conditions and methods of teaching the law of ancient Romans at law faculties in Poland during the period between the two World Wars with those of today. In conclusion, the author states that Roman law is undoubtedly one of the most important components of ancient culture, which has exerted a specific influence on shaping the modern world. The study of Roman law offers a possibility of historical perspective on law, enriches students’ knowledge on the theory and dogmatics of law and teaches the ways of legal thinking. It is impossible to comprehensively understand the evolution and functioning of many modern European legal systems, which stem from solutions formerly adopted already in the law of ancient Rome, without the competence derived from the study of Roman law.

In his Polski teatr Zagłady [The Polish Theater of the Holocaust], Grzegorz Niziołek, who starts with theater and specific theatrical performances and who focuses on artistic phenomena, presents problems that go far beyond art. This is a book that should be read by historians, literary scholars, political scientists and cultural experts. Sociologists and psychologists who study social behavior will also find some of its sections interesting. This Cracow theatrologist presents the extermination of Jews during the occupation of Poland as well as Polish-Jewish relations, i.e. one of the most difficult Polish problems, permeated with silence and resentment, in the form of a monograph and in relation to the history of post-war theater, of which it is an important part.

The article is a critical appraisal of one of the most vital publications concerning Norwid and his biography: Kalendarz życia i twórczosci Cypriana Norwida [Norwid’s life and work calendar], published by Wydawnictwo Poznańskie in 2007. This ample publication has 141 publication sheets that is 1816 printed pages (vol. 1 – pp. 800, vol. 2 – pp. 800, vol. 3 – pp. 216). It constitutes an enormous achievement of the Poznan-based Polish Studies milieu. It is a collective publication, developed by a research team headed by Professor Zofia Trojanowiczowa (co-authors being as follows: Elżbieta Lijewska, Zofia Dambek and Małgorzata Pluty, Jolanta Czarnomorska and Iwona Grzeszczak). The author of the review makes a number of corrections as regards dates and facts, yet he approaches the results of the huge collective research effort with a great deal of researcher’s humility, indispensable in pursuit of historical facts. In his analyses, the author employs the contextual apparatus: historical and philological. The author proves that Norwid’s Calendar is an undeniable source of invaluable knowledge, yet he shows that in this kind of research there is always “endless work of History” waiting ahead.

This article is a critical appraisal of the recent German publication entitled Über die Freiheit des Wortes, which is a German translation of the well-known Norwid's poetic treatise On the freedom of the Word, also including some other translations of his poetic works, e.g. Fatum, W Weronie [In Verona], Bema pamięci żałobny-rapsod [A funeral rhapsody in memory of General Bem], Ironia [Irony] or Fortepian Szopena [Chopin’s Grand Piano]. Yet, preeminent in the volume is the title treatise in verse, if not for the fact that the volume offers the first ever German rendition of this work. According to the author of the article, the translator Peter Gehrisch sometimes happens to fall into interpretation traps that Norwid’s texts are full of: semantic convolutions, phraseological ambiguities or – above all – stylistic and syntactic complications. Another limitation that is evident in the German rendition is that Gehrisch strove very much to preserve in his version the original versed form of the treatise. The result is not always optimal if one considers the senses of the particular phrases or larger fragments.
