Une féérie musicale? Les coproductions cinématographiques entre la République Socialiste Roumaine et l’Union Soviétique

Author(s): Alina Popescu / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2017

This article brings forward an overview of the Romanian-URSS coproductions, in an attempt to explain how film functioned as an instrument of cultural diplomacy between the two countries and between the East and the West. While Romania has been involved in numerous cultural exchanges and in many other forms of cinematographic collaboration with the Soviet Union, this analysis focuses only on the films whose artistic responsibility had been entrusted to a Romanian filmmaker. Five films were thus identified, including a war film made in the 1960s and four musicals and/or films for children and youth made during the 1970s and 1980s. The fact that all of them put music more or less in the foreground appears as no coincidence. This option responded to a strategy oriented towards the Western public, and towards celebrating a Romanian-Soviet friendship cleansed of political tensions. Nevertheless, in a cinematography where politicized films were the main priority, such co-productions played a significant role in the shaping of a popular culture and of a cinema of entertainment.

Revising the Black decolonialization process: Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. and the poetics of violence

Revising the Black decolonialization process: Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. and the poetics of violence

Author(s): Delia Grosu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Frantz Fanon’s writings on decolonization have constantly been read as a call for violence against oppressive colonial rulings. The choice that the subjugated individual must make between remaining a victim or using the colonial violence against those who originally initiated it represents one of Fanon’s main arguments in The Wretched of the Earth. Drawing on Kendrick Lamar’s music album DAMN. (2017), this article aims to show how the rapper rewrites the decolonization process in a poetic way, using metaphors, hyperboles and allegories. The interactions between white and Black individuals that Lamar examines in his songs provide an answer to Fanon’s urge to choose. Moving beyond the Fanonian binary thinking (Black/white, colonizer/colonized), DAMN. provides an insight on how whiteness and Blackness co-inhabit a space full of violent encounters. While presenting an X-ray image of the present-day United States of America, Lamar does not offer an answer on the questions on racism, but he delivers a vivid picture of the outcomes of personal choices, collective failures and perpetual violence.

Calling Out to the Heavens for Aid: Disaster Songs in American Folk Music

Calling Out to the Heavens for Aid: Disaster Songs in American Folk Music

Author(s): David Livingstone / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This article will explore American folk songs dealing with disasters, mostly from the first half of the twentieth century. These songs dealt with shipwrecks, train-wrecks, fires, tornadoes and drought and even the so-called Dust Bowl. Along with murder ballads, these songs functioned as a kind of oral newspaper providing information to even illiterate people in rural America. The songs also served an a stimulus to imagination, opening up exotic worlds to people often isolated and sedentary. The songs provided an opportunity for the listener/singer/musician to experience vicarious pain and catharsis in relation to the particular disaster. Finally, there was often a religious dimension to the songs and disasters which were being memorialised in song. The paper will conclude with a demonstration of how the disaster song finally became politicized with the example of Woody Guthrie. The primary source for the songs was the anthology of disaster songs entitled People Take Warning released in 2007. The artists included in the collection and discussed in this paper range from well-known figures such as the Carter Family and Charlie Poole to lesser known musicians who are practically forgotten. There will also be a discussion of the predecessors to these songs as well as the successors.

Author(s): Dmytro Lievit / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 3/2023

This article examines the use of PR technologies in the context of art and culture. Focusing on the Ukrainian experience, the purpose of the research is to unveil the dynamics of interaction between PR strategies and the promotion of a vocal artist. The research methodology is based on the principles of a systemic approach and content analysis, as well as fundamental tenets of the theory and history of PR technologies in the cultural and artistic sphere. Employing a research-oriented approach, a comprehensive literature review was conducted, encompassing both domestic and international sources. The research underscores the significance of effective PR tactics in the development and promotion of art projects, particularly within the Ukrainian cultural arena. The scientific novelty of this research lies in the first attempt within Ukrainian art studies to organise approaches to PR technology usage and create an algorithm within the context of vocalist promotion. Conclusions. The multifaceted role of PR technologies in shaping the image of a vocalist, their perception by the public, support, engagement, and ensuring sustained artistic influence has been revealed. It is determined that the promotion of an artist takes place on two intersecting planes: within the audience realm and the entertainment industry system. It is emphasised that among the traditional main marketing goals of the music showbiz are the maximisation of both qualitative and quantitative indicators of the artist's popularity, the enlargement of the target audience, and the enhancement of project quality. The study has identified that the social effect of the promotion process is manifested in elevating the initial social value and significance of the musical product in mass consumer consciousness, improving the performer's stage image in front of audiences, and increasing the growth of music product sales.

Author(s): Natalia Petrovska / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 3/2023

The purpose of the research is to reveal the poetic and intonation uniqueness of V. Malyszewski's “Kuyavian Fantasy” in the stream of ideas of Polish national revival, actualised in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. The methodology of the work is based on the intonation concept of music from the perspective of intonation-stylistic, etymological analysis. Analytical-musicological, genre-stylistic, and interdisciplinary approaches were essential for the work, which made it possible to reveal and investigate the genre-intonational nature of V. Malyszewski's “Kuyavian Fantasy” and its correlation with the ideas of Polish national revival at the beginning of the 20th century. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by its analytical perspective, which takes into account both the genre-stylistic specificity of V. Malyszewski's work and its correlation with the historical realities of Polish national state-building and the representation of his ideas in the culture and music of the first half of the 20th century. Conclusions. V. Malyshweski is an outstanding composer, teacher, whose multifaceted activity became a brilliant embodiment of personal Renaissance encyclopedism and creative universalism against the background of an organic synthesis of Slavic cultures, the genesis of which went back to the spiritual-national and religious-ethical guidelines of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The latter became relevant during the period of restoration of Polish statehood (1918) against the background of the ideas of Prometheus. “Kuyavian fantasy” by V. Malyshewsky, which combined genre features of fantasy, suite and concert, became an artistic embodiment of the leading ideas of its time, symbolically directed to the ancient instructions of the Slavic world and Polish statehood, which is also evident in the programmatic appeal to the image of Kuyavia as an ancient Polish region; and to the etymological affinity of the name of these lands with ancient Kuyavia, related to ancient Ukrainian territories and Kyiv. “Kuyavian fantasy”, on the one hand, carefully reproduces the genre palette of Kuyaviak both as a regional dance-suite and as an example of Polish dance culture in general. On the other hand, the composer's overcoming of the purely applied role of this dance, which demonstrates the code section of the work, which acquires the characteristics of a majestic hymn to the revived Motherland, is indicative.

КОНЦЕРТИ Ф. ШОПЕНА У ВТІЛЕННІ ІДЕЙ БІДЕРМАЄРА

Author(s): Zhu Ziyi / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 3/2023

The purpose of the work is to identify the stylistic features of Biedermeier in the large forms of F. Chopin at the level of a piano concerto as bringing connections with spiritualised "light" playing in aristocratic salon gatherings, giving signs of a baroque obligatory concerto in a symphonic form. The constructed heroic-melancholic sub-base of Chopin's presentation of concert typology inspired the latter with a thought-oriented approach, according to the observation of researchers of this author's work. The methodological basis of the study is the intonation approach in the vision of the genetic unity of musical and speech beginnings in the development of the concepts of B. Asafiev and B. Yavorskyi in the works of D. Androsova, O. Markova, I. Podobas, L. Stepanova, L. Shevchenko, with an emphasis on the hermeneutical perspective of such an approach. Also highlighted are biographical-descriptive methods, with an emphasis on its intellectual-biographical aspect for the sake of the accuracy of the interpretive indicators of the analysis of compositions, analytical-structural as focused on the musicological specificity of the thematic and constructive presentation of the features of compositions, interspecies stylistic comparative for the awareness of artistic-artistic and scientific-religious interactions tendencies in F. Chopin's thinking. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by relying on Biedermeier's concept of "big in small" when analysing the large-scale form of the concert, especially as it relates to the initial Warsaw period, when the author created Concertos without returning to this genre in the subsequent stages of his creative life. Conclusions. Biedermeier notes the underappreciated textural and expressive essence of Chopin's presentation of the concert form, which at high tempos of the game "dematerialised" the theatrical dialogue of the classical concert in favour of approaching the thoughtfulness of the lyrical-epic monologue of the baroque forms, inseparable from the spiritual genesis of the named genre. The monologisation of the concert form in Chopin is related to the alleluia complex of Chopin's ultra-fast playing as a representative of spiritualised salon light pianism, no stranger to touches of romantic dramatic antitheticism in the epochal borderline Biedermeier pro-religious chamberisation of expression.

МУЗИЧНО-ТЕАТРАЛЬНА ТВОРЧІСТЬ В ЛОГОСІ ІСТОРІЇ МУЗИКИ

Author(s): Olena Stalyevna Afonina / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 4/2023

The purpose of the article is to analyse the productions of the 21st century musical and theatrical works of the 19th - 20th centuries in the aspect of postmodernism and baroque. The methodology of the work includes scientific methods (source studies, historical, generalising) and methods of comparative analysis to reveal the specifics of postmodern performances. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that sources in foreign languages have been introduced into scientific circulation, and an analysis of musical and theatrical works has been carried out. Conclusions. It is noted that at all times the opera remains a musical-dramatic performance with a synthesis of arts that affect human feelings and immerse in audiovisual art. Postmodern music and theatre creativity, as well as baroque art, are aimed at evoking affects (states of mind) through various influences. In postmodernism, this is already the systemic influence of singing, dancing, modern technologies with the immersion of the audience in the action and plot complications, which also contribute to the transmission of various affective states. In the Baroque era, the composer was not considered an original genius, and their creativity and works were not untouched. The performer was allowed to interpret the written text. Postmodern period plays are characterised by: changing the libretto (E. Humperdinck’s "Hansel and Gretel" ("Jeníček a Mařenka", 1890, 2015); A. Dvořák’s "The Devil and Káča" ("Čert a Káča", 1899, 2016); "A soldier and a dancer". According to the functional sphere and the city of performance, parts of the work could be omitted or replaced. Actually, what we observe today, in the art of postmodernism is a reinterpretation of the heroes and their functions (Hansel and Gretel are not just poor children, but circus students, where the father is a director). Features of domestic comedy, fairy tale – in baroque opera were complemented by masks and tragic events. In post-modern performances, masks are replaced by puppets, for example, in the operas of B. Martin "The Soldier and the Dancer", E. Humperdinck "Hansel and Gretel", A. Dvořák "The Devil and the Duck". A parallel with the French baroque opera-ballet in the works of postmodernism is the strengthening of the role of dance in opera performances ("The Devil and Kacha", ballet with singing by B. Martin "Spalicek"). Plots with real and fairy-tale-fantasy characters, which are similar to the "myth" ("Hansel and Gretel", "The Devil and the Duck"). The external spectacularity and scale in Baroque works resonate with the specific stage design: inn, hell, palace ("Devil and Kacha"); animation of the middle of the 20th century – Disney pictures ("Hansel and Gretel"); the image of the Soldier – the world of dreams – childhood with dolls – a machine with dolls ("The Soldier and the Dancer").

The purpose of the article is to reveal the peculiarities of the coverage of piano art by the first Ukrainian professional musicologists in Galician journalism of the 1930s. The methodology of the study is based on the application of special historical (source, comparative and historical-typological), epistemological and generalising methods of analysis. The scientific novelty is that for the first time in Ukrainian musicology an attempt was made to analyse the thematic journalistic work of the first Ukrainian professional musicologists of a certain historical period. They promoted Ukrainian musical culture, explained to the general public the stylistic features of piano composition and the "secrets" of performance. For the first time, the object of attention is studied as a separate typified phenomenon in the context of the development of science in the first third of the twentieth century. Сonclusions. The analysis of the publicistic legacy of S. Liudkevych and N. Nyzhankivsky, dedicated to the piano art, has shown that its authors, reacting to events and analysing creativity and performance, showed a greater (the former) or lesser (the latter) breadth of topics (in addition to creativity and performance, S. Lіudkevych often touched upon educational problems), different types of presentation of thoughts (analytical and descriptive, respectively), different degrees of coverage of the topic (phenomenon, portrait), different types of expression (calm, attentive to details, principled in critical remarks, or pictorial – expressive, emotionally uplifting), showed different criteria for assessing the phenomenon (from the standpoint of social and artistic utility or personal taste/impression). Thus, they demonstrated the versatility of Ukrainian piano journalism and a new (professionally dictated) level of critical analysis, which has emerged in this period of development of scientific and critical thinking.

The purpose of the article is to determine the influence of the “philosophy of the random” on the formation of unique creative methods of the tandem, which ran counter to the aesthetic views of modern choreography; to investigate the key aspects of the interaction of principles, mechanisms of dramaturgy, expressive means of music and choreographic art within the framework of an artistic synthetic phenomenon. The research methodology includes historical and analytical methods, methods of comparative and cultural analysis. The scientific novelty consists in the analysis of the transformation of the North American choreographic tradition of modernism in the joint creative projects of John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Using the example of the experimental creative projects of J. Cage and M. Cunningham, the main signs of the interaction of musical and choreographic structures in the field of synthetic artistic practices are clarified. Conclusions. The peculiarities of creative communication of J. Cage and M. Cunningham were determined on the example of joint development and artistic embodiment of experimental aesthetic concepts. In the context of an active creative dialogue with the tradition of North American modern choreography the heredity of aesthetic ideas was revealed, which became the basis for the formation of the artistic principles of the Cage–Cunningham tandem. The value of the aleatoric method as a formative principle of the musical and choreographic whole in joint artistic actions of the aforementioned tandem was analysed. The influence of the “philosophy of the random” on the formation of unique creative methods of tandem, which were contrary to the aesthetic views of modern choreography, was determined. The artistic phenomenon that actualises research intentions and reflections becomes a unique result of intense creative interaction of such polar-organised personalities. The experimental aleatoric practices of J. Cage and M. Cunningham in the synthetic paradigm of musical and choreographic art became an artistic opposition to the strictly regulated concept of story ballet by M. Graham and the relentlessly deterministic system of the dodecaphonic technique of A. Schoenberg. In a broad cultural sense, this can be considered a unique symbiosis between the rational West and the intuitive East.

COMPLEXITATEA INTERELAȚIONARII TEXTULUI LITERAR CU TEXTUL MUZICAL ÎN OPERE PE TEXTELE LUI SHAKESPEARE

Author(s): Marius Munteanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 6/2023

Essentially, Shakespeare established music as a crucial element in his artistic creations, making it an indispensable presence in the theatrical universe. She was not just an accompaniment, but a distinct voice, amplifying the emotions of the characters and providing a sublime soundscape for each scene. By integrating stage language with musical sound, Shakespeare created a vibrant fresco, bringing the characters to life and evoking a range of emotions in the hearts of the audience. Music thus became the driving force that defined every moment in his songs. More than forty of his works have been adapted to stage music, being turned into captivating operas and ballets by renowned composers such as Gioacchino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Charles Gounod, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Purcell and Pascal Bentoiu, reflecting the strong influence that Shakespeare has had a hold on the artistic and cultural world throughout time.

From Ipanema Across the Ocean – Brazil’s Image Abroad Through Music

Author(s): Carlos Panek / Language(s): English Issue: 24/2023

Brazilian music carries strong characteristics of its people and has become one of the most recognizable features of the country abroad. In this study, I analyze how Brazil is pictured overseas by the means of music as an element of soft power of the country. Nonetheless, I bring attention to the importance of self-awareness of the Brazilian identity and its rela- tions with the image that the country has abroad. I address the issue through analysis of the cases of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Carmem Miranda, bossa nova, and heavy metal. In this analysis, the role of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also taken into account. I suggest that Oswald de Andrade’s anthropophagic idea can apply to the reflections of Brazilians towards their image abroad.

Exploring the Potential of Blockchain Data as Pseudorandom Numbers for Microtonal Algorithmic Composition. A Case Study on Blockchain Music 2.5

Exploring the Potential of Blockchain Data as Pseudorandom Numbers for Microtonal Algorithmic Composition. A Case Study on Blockchain Music 2.5

Author(s): Krzysztof Kicior / Language(s): English Issue: 11/2023

This study explores the utilization of blockchain data as a set of pseudorandom numbers in the context of microtonal algorithmic composition. Conventional methods of generating indiscriminate numbers often lack the desired levels of unpredictability and uniqueness necessary for an intricate musical piece. By harnessing the hash parameter of several blockchains, we propose an innovative approach for obtaining pseudorandom numbers that offer heightened randomness and diversity. Moreover, the ensuing structure ensures the preservation of all composition data on servers, facilitating the re-generation of the piece and enabling listeners to revisit its past fragments. Additionally, leveraging blockchain technology allows the audience to actively interact with the composition, fostering a more engaging and participatory musical experience. Through a comprehensive case study of a self-written, self-generating piece (Blockchain Music 2.5, 2023), we demonstrate the practical implementation of blockchain-generated numbers, showcasing their potential in exploring new post-tonal dimensions and producing unique sonic textures based on the predetermined set of rules. We also discuss the implications, challenges, and potential future directions of incorporating blockchain-generated numbers in algorithmic music composition. The research expands the landscape of digital music composition techniques and offers new avenues for leveraging blockchain technology in the domain of creative expression.
