Лексичні засоби позначення дитячого віку в писемних пам’ятках української мови ХVІ–ХVІІІ ст.

Author(s): Oksana Zelіnsʹka / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 1/2019

Research devoted to childhood as a social-cultural phenomenon has become more active in present-day science. Scientists study some peculiarities of the perception of child and childhood by society in different historical epochs, try to fix childhood limits and to define age periods within child age, and make a conclusion that in many cases, periods of man’s life are correlated with social roles of people rather than with biological age, and they were formed under the influence of social institutes developing together with the evolution of society. The present paper analyzes lexical means used in written records of the Ukrainian language in the 16th–18th centuries to denote child age and express the concept of an age differentiation of childhood. The written records of the Ukrainian language of different genres in the mentioned period were the sources of the research: e.g. business language records, P. Berynda’s dictionary, religious texts, sermons, and poetic works. Lexical units expressing child age to denote childhood as an age period of man’s life and general names originating from colloquial language and taken from Church Slavonic were used to denote children. Written sources confirm an active use of hypocoristic forms. The lack of a clear classification of childhood into separate age periods is seen in the system of children’s names. Most of the general names denoting children did not represent an age gradation of childhood and only some words were special names of a child expressing an age characteristic: those were the names of a newly-born child and a baby. Some adjectives combination with nouns to denote children indicated a relative age characteristic (little, minor) but the contexts in which phrases with the adjective little were used did not give a reason to distinguish between a little child and a young man. In several sources, a seven-year period was classified as a special stage in a child’s life, first of all, due to religious practice. According to Christian tradition, a child was considered to have no sins until the age of 7 since he or she cannot distinguish between good and bad. After that, he or she had to shrive. In secular practice, the age of 7 became the time when a child would be sent to an educational institution. The texts of pedagogical orientation prove the synonymy of common names denoting children with special names of the individuals who get education. A differentiation according to an age characteristic “adulthood” vs. “minority” can be seen clearly, which is explained by the legal status of an adult and, correspondingly, is expressed by the corresponding lexical denotations. The vocabulary denoting this age period is mostly represented by sources written in business language. One can see that lexical semantics, with help of which child age is marked in records of the Ukrainian language in the 16th–18th centuries, gives a general concept of childhood common for Ukrainian and European social communities of that time.

Die erste historische Fachbibliothek im Donau-Karpatenraum? Martin Schmeizel und seine Büchersammlung

Author(s): Avdo Sućeska / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 42-43/1995

Historical roots of the genocide against the Bosniaks can be found in the attitudes of Austria, Venice and Russia to the Muslims, particularly the Bosniaks, during the wars with the Ottoman State. Unlike the Ottoman Muslim State, in which the Koranic principile "La ikrahe fi ddini" (There is no forcing in faith) was respected, the Christian States applied the medieval principle "Cuius regio, illius religio" ( Religion is of those who are in power). Abiding by that principle, the Christian States destroyed Muslims if they refused to accept Christianity, This was particularly revealed during the so-called Great War (1683-1699) when many a Muslim, Bosniak first of all, was killed; many were captured, women and children particularly, and forcibly christened. That practice existed all the time until the war between Austria and the Ottoman Empire (1788-1790), when the enlightened Emperor Joseph II of Austria promised the Bosniaks, if they were peaceful, their personal security and the security of their property. Thus, for the first time, the equality of Islam with other religions was promised and even salaries for the religious officials from the national treasury. But, this did not stop the genocide against the Bosniaks as the role was taken over by the Bosniaks’ neighbors - Serbs and Montenegrins, who have been until the present day committing genocide against the Bosniaks in the cruelest manner, unseen in the history of mankind.

NAHIJA BANJA LUKA U OPŠIRNOM POPISU BOSANSKOG SANDŽAKA IZ 1604. GODINE

NAHIJA BANJA LUKA U OPŠIRNOM POPISU BOSANSKOG SANDŽAKA IZ 1604. GODINE

Author(s): Amina Kupusović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 44-45/1996

The paper gives a translation of the 1604 cadastral census of the Bosnian Sanjak for the district of Banja Luka. The source original is kept at the Tapu-Kadastro Genel Miidurlugu Archives in Ankara under call number TD 479. Banja Luka and its environs fell to the Ottoman rule in 1528. At first it was embodied in the district of Brod, and later it was established as a separate district of Banja Luka. The town itself developed vigorously in the second half of the 16th century, especially since it had become the seat of Bosnian Beglerbey Ferhat Pasha. According to that census the district had 51 settlements, and the town, including the part; called Varoš, had 15 residential sub-quarters. The registry gives the data on the urban development of Banja Luka, the spread of Islam, the demographic and religious image of the district.

Author(s): Fehim Nametak / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 44-45/1996

In this paper the wealth of the Turkish Archives of the Franciscan Monastery Visovac near Šibenik has been presented with a few documents. The documents contain mainly the material of interest for the study of life in that monastery, which has been active for 550 years, but some of them have broader significance since they contain the material for the study of political, economic and cultural history of Dalmatian hinterland, the Klis Sanjak as a whole and the links of these areas with Bosnia.

Franjevačke početnice od Divkovića do Jukića

Franjevačke početnice od Divkovića do Jukića

Author(s): Dolores Grmača,Ivana Krešić Klaucke / Language(s): Croatian Issue: II/2020

Contemporary impression that reading is simple is just an illusion acquired through automatic and unconscious processes of learning this skill, cognitive neuroscientists warn. The architecture of the human brain was not designed for reading, and mastering of literacy is one of the most important epigenetic achievements of homo sapiens in a way that reading has become „transformative catalyst of the intellectual development of an individual and literal cultures“ in the past millennia (Wolf 2019:12). In this sense the role of the Franciscan primers in Croatian language in the history of teaching literacy over a Bosna Srebrena province, ie. within the current borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is going to be observed. Hence this article analyzes all printed Franciscan primers from the first known, which was published in bosanica script together with little Nauk krstjanski by Matija Divković in 1669 to the last one of the six latinic primers, which had been published during the 19th century until the Austro-Hungarian military occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878. In this research corpus special attention is going to be dedicated to Divković’s bukvica, the first and only specialized textbook for teaching reading, printed in bosanica script, and latinic primers Poçetak slovstva (Split 1815) by Augustin Miletić, Bukvar iliti poçetak slovstva illiriçkogʼ, i latinskog jezika (Budim 1836) by Stjepan Marijanović and Početak pismenstva (Zagreb 1848) by Ivan Frane Jukić. Through these didactic handbooks the process of transition from bosanica to Latin script is followed, as well as the process of enquiry for the appropriate reform of Latin graphics, which ended by final acceptance of Illyrian graphics in Jukić’s primer. Shaping of primers, impact of methods of teaching the initial literacy and their shifts in practical use will be perceived within social-political context of the last centuries of Ottoman rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Franciscans are among the first ones who joined the tradition of publishing specialized textbooks in our area, which testifies of a high degree of concern for education and literacy in the vernacular.

LEKSYKA WSPÓLNOODMIANOWA XVII-WIECZNEJ POLSZCZYZNY (NA PRZYKŁADZIE SŁOWNICTWA UTWORÓW WACŁAWA POTOCKIEGO)

Author(s): Katarzyna Sornat / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2018

This paper presents the results of stylistic and semantic research on Middle Polish vocabulary represented by 300 nominal names excerpted from selected works by Wacław Potocki (1621–1696). The insufficient number of studies dedicated to stylistics of the 17th-century lexis encouraged the author to carry out the analyses. Based on the works by A. Markowski and D. Buttler, which describe methods of identifying common inflection vocabulary of the contemporary Polish, the author makes an attempt to apply similar examinations to old lexis. By means of vocabulary research and her own analyses, she separates, among others, sets of expressive, specialist and erudite vocabulary from the collected material, which in turn permits her to distinguish a group of neutral, stylistically unmarked, lexis from among 300 nouns. The employment of the structuralist method of semantic fields for Middle Polish common words enables the development of a thematic grid representing the distribution of the studied units in individual classes of real meanings. A comparative analysis of the semantic layer of the common vocabulary in two distant historical phases confirms a high stability and universal anthropocentrism of this part of the lexical resource of Polish.

MUSLIMANI KAO PORESKI OBVEZNICI U OSMANSKIM DEFTERIMA DŽIZJE: STUDIJA SLUČAJA ZA VILAJET BROD U DRUGOJ POLOVICI 17. STOLJEĆA

Author(s): Fahd Kasumović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 69/2020

This paper aims to deconstruct the traditional narratives on the Ottoman financial and political strategies towards non-Muslim and Muslim subjects in the Western Balkans by re-examining the foundation, extent and consequences of the central government’s policy of demanding a payment of jizya tax not only from non-Muslims, as stipulated in the classical Sharia law, but from the Muslim population as well. Although academic community is aware of the existence of Muslim jizya payers in several regions of the Ottoman Empire, this paper argues that historiographic knowledge on the mentioned phenomenon is rather rudimentary as present studies on this topic are based on a very limited data while official financial records that contain information on Muslim jizya payers, such as the jizya registers from the Ottoman Bosnia, have still not been thoroughly analysed. Recognizing the need to include financial records into the account, the main research strategy of this paper was to identify and examine records of jizya payers which contain a significant number of Muslims in a taxpayer role as well as to compare and interpret this data with other financial, administrative and legal texts that could help us gain better insight into the phenomenon of Muslim jizya payers in the Ottoman practice. The main primary source for the analysis provided in this study was a register of jizya payers from the vilayet of Brod, in central parts of the Ottoman Bosnia, from the 1679, which have not been previously used in historiographic studies. On the basis of this financial register, it has been concluded that more that 90% of all jizya payers in the territory covered in the mentioned register were Muslims, which is an important and interesting fact that has still not been recorded in any other part of the Ottoman Empire.

The article proposes a publication of some graffiti, dated in various times from 16th to 18th centuries, from the Western façade of the former monastery church of St Demetrius above Boboshevo. It was a prosperous village under Ottoman power due to its special régime and the protection of the Sultan’s daughter. The church of St Demetrius is a former monastery temple, built on the hills above the village and with a ctitor’s inscription from the second part of 15th century. The article is centred on the graffiti from the Western façade of the church. Inscriptions group A are from the composition of the Hospitality of Abraham; inscriptions group B are from the composition of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple; Inscription group C are from the decorations above the entrance door of the church.

WYKŁADNIKI SARMATYZMU WE FRAZEOLOGII DAWNIEJ I DZIŚ – NA PRZYKŁADZIE UTWORÓW WACŁAWA POTOCKIEGO I FRAZEOLOGIZMÓW WSPÓŁCZESNYCH

Author(s): Katarzyna Sornat / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2020

The insufficient number of studies dedicated to the phraseology of works by Wacław Potocki (1621–1696) encouraged the author to examine this area of the Sarmatian writer’s oeuvre. This paper presents the outcome of a lexical and semantic analysis of 40 idioms excerpted from three representative works by the poet: Ogród nie plewiony (Unweeded Garden), Moralia (Morals), and Transakcja wojny chocimskiej (Transaction of the Hotin War). Based on the adopted material sample, an attempt was made to identify the characteristics of Sarmatism, a cultural formation of the Commonwealth the main representative of which was W. Potocki. To this end, the collected expressions and phrases were classified by three thematic fields that were significant for the sociolect of the nobility (<everyday life>, <religion>, <war>). An important complementation of the analysis of the Baroque phraseology is tracking it until modern times. The conducted comparative research of the lexical resources of the Polish language in its two distant periods showed that, despite the over three hundred years between the examined materials, the sarmatisation of language has still been a significant component of the Polish culture.

Digital Monument Reconstruction in Architectural Studies: Synthesis of Research on the Previously Unknown Form of the Palace in Łobzów (Cracow) from the Period of the Rule of John III Sobieski

Author(s): Piotr Pikulski / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

The former palace in Łobzów, which currently houses the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology, has an exceedingly rich architectural history. Since the Middle Ages, it has gone through a series of changes that have significantly altered its form each time. Thanks to modern digital reconstruction technology, it was possible to recreate all of its architectural phases in the form of 3D models on the basis of archaeological studies and the analysis of historical materials. The models were then used to reconstruct the most probable appearance of the building during the period when the Polish king John III Sobieski lived there. Determining the most probable state of the palace’s preservation during King Sobieski’s rule, which had not been investigated thus far, was possible only because of the combining of traditional research methods with modern technology.

Opinie na temat rządów w Rzeczypospolitej z perspektywy zabezpieczenia ludności przed plagą jasyru – w wypowiedziach wybranych pamiętnikarzy siedemnastego stulecia

Author(s): Renata Ryba / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

The research so far has failed to notice that for 17th century memoirists, the state’s ability to defend its citizens against Tatar captivity was an important criterion for the assessment of the government’s effectiveness. In fact, in Poland at that time, Tatar raids were a serious problem. The Tatars would kidnap inhabitants of the south- eastern borderlands on a mass scale. This is why Polish memoirists at that time reflected on how the government coped when it came to limiting this threat. The author focused precisely on the documentalists’ assessment of the government’s actions to protect its subjects against captivity. On the basis of a historical and literary analysis, it can be concluded from the memoirists’ statements selected in terms of their subject matter that these judgments were most often critical. The aspects outlined here are ones that failed to draw the attention of researchers studying Old Polish literature; they may also serve as a source for historical and cultural observations.

Russland und die Orientalische Frage (1688–1878) Zwischen “Formal” und “Informal Power” auf dem Balkan

Author(s): Ivan Parvev / Language(s): German Issue: 3-4/2020

The chapter examines the foreign policy of Russia towards the Balkans, as seen through the prism of the “Eastern Question” between its beginning in 1688 and the Congress of Berlin (1878). The author proposes a new definition and a new periodization of the “Eastern Questions”, which should be regarded as an attempt to shad a new light on that particular scholarly field. Contrary to the common belief that Imperial Russia had some problems in using “Soft Power” as a tool of foreign policy, the author states that in the “Eastern Question” Russian rulers were quite effective in establishing “Informal Power” in the Balkans in contrast to the Austrians, who preferred to stick to traditional policy of expansion based on the principle of “uti possidetis”. The special combination between moderate territorial gains in South-East Europe and a sweeping extension of “Informal Power” is the key for explanation of Russian domination between 1774 and 1856 not only in the Balkans, but in the “Eastern Question” as well. Besides all that the Russians made use of a special kind of war against the Ottomans, named by the author as a “Consensual War”, which could also promote Russia’s “Informal Power”. The Eastern Crisis of 1875–1878, which marks the end of the chapter, is analysed as the attempt of Russia to re-gain some lost influence in the Balkans after the Treaty of Paris (1856) by the establishment of an “Informal Power” in Bulgaria. The Treaty of Berlin (1878) allowed St. Petersburg to secure its influence in the “Two Bulgarias” and to regain lands, lost after the Crimean War. However, Tsar Alexander II and his advisers were very unhappy with the final outcome of the Eastern Crisis, which was partly due to the very emotional stand in Russia towards the War of 1877–1878, where contrary to the other Russian-Ottoman wars the conflict was perceived as a war with a “Liberation Mission” to free the Bulgarians from the “yoke of the Turks”.

Az egyesült Európa – történelmi gyökerek

Az egyesült Európa – történelmi gyökerek

Author(s): Csilla Dömők / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 2/2017

As all the victorious political concept, the concept of united Europe is diffuse. As a notion, it lacks strict definition, since its content is inexhaustible. Interpretations can be numerous and it offers different opinions which are not compatible with each other. The concept of Europe is against the status-quo of the nation-state, against dissipation, separation, against national egotism and antagonism, against the pursuit of autarky and hegemony. The elimination of these problems are desirable on the other side of the nation-state horizon. This is how the concept of the united Europe connects to the concept of global citizenship. Cosmopolitan features can also be traced in this process. It is not by mistake that Shiller’s Ode to Joy („Ode an die Freude”), which is about making all the people brothers and sisters, is the official hymn of Europe, setting to music by Beethoven.

Between history and law: reflections about the history and legal fundaments of the recognition of Quilombola communities in Brazil

Between history and law: reflections about the history and legal fundaments of the recognition of Quilombola communities in Brazil

Author(s): Tássia Verônica Brandão Teixeira / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2017

Originated in the context of a slavery regime in Brazil which lasted up to 1888, quilombo communities were an expression of resistance against such a system of oppression and through its existence faced marginalization and in were forced to secrecy, which imposed several challenges to the legal recognition of such remaining communities in the last decades. They were first referenced to in official documents of the Portuguese Empire dating back to 1559, all the same not being seem as subjects to rights. Brazil’s first Land Law from 1850 effectively deprived quilombo communities of rights over the lands they inhabited by excluding forms of land occupation other than purchase or granting by the State from legal recognition. It is only by the 1990’s that the public authorities’ commitment to legitimate and issue land titles for remaining quilombo communities is finally set through legal dispositives. This paper aims to reflect on the developments on recognition of quilombola communities in Brazil through listing and examining legal provisions published in the last decades regarding the subject matter.

Една фотография от първата половина на XX век и църквата в село Яна

Author(s): Maya Zaharieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2020

The article looks at the medieval church in the village of Yana, first published in the 1950s by Nikola Mavrodinov in the book Old Bulgarian Art. The lack of information about this well known in the historiography and interesting monument intrigued me. Does such a church exist and where is it today? These questions led me to deepen my research. The text is an attempt to collect and present in full all the historical data and to clarify the location of the medieval temple. The archival materials and publications from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century contributed to determining the location of this monument, namely the village of Yana, located in Eastern Thrace, Bunarhisar region. It was renamed in the first half of the 20th century in Kaynardzha and today is located on the territory of the Republic of Turkey. Today only the base of the temple is preserved and the only evidence of the appearance of the church is the archival photograph.
