Richard Taruskin - “Titan” of Universal Musicology. On the Fascination and Imperative of Cursed Questions

Richard Taruskin - “Titan” of Universal Musicology. On the Fascination and Imperative of Cursed Questions

Author(s): Mihaela-Georgiana Balan / Language(s): English Issue: 27-28/2023

On the first day of July 2022, the headline of an article in the New York Times officially announced the passing of the great American musicologist Richard Taruskin. The news of the loss of a world-renowned researcher, whose prolific activity changed ancient paradigms of musical thought, constitutes an impetus for the new generations of musicologists of the 21st century in approaching music history and analysis from a new, multi-branched and integrative perspective, constantly adaptable to the reality of our days. The present study aims to systematize and promote the ideas gathered in the last volume published during the author’s lifetime, Cursed Questions: On Music and Its Social Practices (2020), which comprises in a condensed form Taruskin’s conceptions regarding the relationship between music, external factors and the other adjacent disciplines (aesthetics, philosophy, sociology).

Symbolic Designs of Textile Art in African Fabrics

Symbolic Designs of Textile Art in African Fabrics

Author(s): Oladoyin J. Labode,Olasunmbo O. Braide / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This paper examines the symbolic designs of expressive creativity on African fabrics in textile art. It highlights the variations on the theme, symbolic design, colour, and techniques used for the production of African fabrics. Data for the study rely on primary and secondary sources. The primary data were obtained from in-depth interview, samples of African fabrics drawn from exhibition catalogues as well as unstructured interview schedules with primary artists producing some of the textiles in Africa and users wearing clothes drawn from the African people in Nigeria, Mali, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Tanzania. The illustration of the variations in symbols found in African textile, derived from exhibition catalogues, were used to express the cultural contextual meaning of design patterns on African fabrics. Cultural nationalism and identity dominate the printed geometric forms of flora and fauna as well as other patterns of symbolic designs found on the fabrics. The symbolic designs and variations in theme, colour and patterns on African textile represent rare artistic creativity and expression in the current development of textile art in Africa.

Author(s): Angela POTÂNG / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 26/2021

The aim of this study is to address the phenomenon of creativity in order to gain a deeper understanding of what stimulates creative behavior in the workplace. The article also investigates the importance of individual and social factors in the manifestation of organizational creativity. De la perte à la réédification du sens dans Les blessures du silence de Natacha Calestrémé

De la perte à la réédification du sens dans Les blessures du silence de Natacha Calestrémé

Author(s): Keltoum Soualah / Language(s): French Issue: 34/2023

The author was able to transform the story of the disappearance of Amandine Moulin, which embodyed the loss of the meaning of life, in a work of analysis and a thoughtful prospecting. In fact, working on the reconstruction of meaning leads her to boldly explain the mechanism of destruction following the influence of manipulation and narcissistic perversion. We will there fore try to demonstrate that the motif of loss in this novel outlines the path of an individuation of the self, considering that Amandine will eventually be mature and will recover her missing part of soul. We will first highlight the great moments of this plural loss experienced by the narrator and the other characters. Then, we will deepen the different dimensions of this loss of meaning and trace the course of individuation as explained by the C.G. Jung.

Истината като шок и скука

Author(s): Maurice N. Fadel / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Jonathan Littell’s novel The Kindly Ones places literature in a very unusual position ‒ that of a witness to the truth. The unexpected status of literature turns out to be justified because neither the victims nor the executioners can describe the terrible events of the Holocaust during World War II. The victims are subjected to the extermination, the executioners try to conceal their guilt. Then we need a third point of view – that of the fictional narrative. Because the executioners survive, unlike the victims, Littell’s novel sets out to present the Holocaust from their perspective. However, to what extent can we trust the main character, the Nazi officer Maximilian Aue? Does his seemingly objective narrative in fact not leads us towards belittling of the events he describes?

Комикът среща трагедията

Author(s): Galina Georgieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The focus of this article is the development of Volodymyr Zelensky as an actor with a career spanning over 20 years, mainly concentrated in the field of comedy genres, before he was elected President of Ukraine. As a key to the understanding of Zelensky’s performance style, Mikhail Chekhov’s theory of acting is drawn, insofar as, on the one hand, it is particularly relevant in the context of the post-Soviet artistic scene, and on the other hand, it offers tools for building a stage and screen image, whose effects are visible precisely in the realm of comedy. Zelensky’s on-screen presence from the end of the 1990s and the evolution of his team from Studio Kvartal 95 are traced in the context of the question of whether the TV shows and the series „Servant of the People“ can be commented on as a political project, especially after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. The role of satire in the process of forming civic consciousness in the audience and even in the process of forming national identity is considered. Ultimately, the observations stress the political functionality of the image of the actor-comedian, who will eventually face the tragedy of war.

Социокултурни условия на новата живопис в България по време на прехода (1989‒2004 г.)

Author(s): Nikolai Petkov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The article presents an interpretation how with the collapse of the cultural system of real socialism in Bulgaria the art scene begins its transformation into a ‘field of art’ (in the sense of Pierre Bourdieu), in the context of the significant political, economic and social changes. It introduces a view on the specific forces, stakes and interests involved in the developments, through which painting that had been dominating the field initially, was overshadowed by new media practices in the mid 90 s, to achieve recognition at the end of the period as legitimate medium of contemporary art on certain conditions.

Does the Perceived Authentic Leadership Have a Mediating Role in the Relationship Between Employees’ Emotional Intelligence and Self-Compassion?

Does the Perceived Authentic Leadership Have a Mediating Role in the Relationship Between Employees’ Emotional Intelligence and Self-Compassion?

Author(s): Osman Yalap,Emre Gençay / Language(s): English Issue: 1 (99)/2023

Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to evaluate whether perceived authentic leadership has a mediating role in the relationship between employees’ emotional intelligence levels and their self- -compassion perceptions.Design/methodology/approach: All data in the research were obtained from 175 employees in 12 different tea factories. In the study, in which the descriptive and cross-sectional method was followed, the analysis of the data was made with Hayes’ (2013) simple mediation analysis approach within the scope of structural equation modeling.Findings: The results of the analysis show that authentic leadership perceptions of employees are positively related to their emotional intelligence levels and self-compassion perceptions, and that perceived authentic leadership plays a mediating role in this relationship.Research limitations/implications: The research has some limitations. First, the findings obtained in the course of the analyses are not generalized to the whole population, as they are collected from a specific sample. It should be mentioned that the results were obtained from different institutions. It can be said that the perceived authentic leadership approach plays a role in the relationship between individual-oriented positive attitudes such as emotional intelligence and self-compassion. Therefore, it is anticipated that the results obtained from the study contribute to the literature. In addition, handling the statistical aspect of the research only with the mediation analysis approach constitutes a separate limitation. Different statistical approaches can be adopted for future studies.Originality/value: This study presents a fragment of the results of structural equation modeling conducted for tea industry employees in Turkey on the topic of authentic leadership.

Is critical thinking a future skill for business success: science mapping and literature review

Author(s): Radosław Malik,Małgorzata Skrzek-Lubasińska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose – This article aims to review critical thinking (CT) as a future skill in business. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed two research methods: science mapping analysis based on bibliometric keyword co-occurrence data and systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines. The application of two distinctive research methods meant that we could obtain a broad picture thematic overview as well as a detailed, fine-grained insight into the content of CT business research. Findings – Research in CT in business studies is dominated by themes related to education, university and learning that far outweigh CT business application, which focuses on three research axes. These are specific business functions (e.g. accounting, marketing, human resources and identifying business opportunities), certain skills used in business (e.g. decision-making and creativity) and other business-related topics (including ethics, stakeholder relations and individual employee performance).Practical implications – The article identifies new research gaps related to the link between CT and business performance, a firm’s ability to innovate and company characteristics. Moreover, the article highlights that CT positively influences business decision-making under the influence of cognitive biases and heuristics. Originality/value – The article provides the first literature review on CT in business research. It uses a novel method of science mapping analysis to show unbiased algorithmic-based insight into the structure of the research, followed by a systematic literature review.

Responsibilities towards places in a degrowth society: How firms can become more responsible via embracing deep ecology

Responsibilities towards places in a degrowth society: How firms can become more responsible via embracing deep ecology

Author(s): Iana Nesterova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This article contemplates and proposes responsibilities towards places. Such responsibilities cannot be reduced to a mere sum of responsibilities towards humans and nature. Rather, they form a pathway to think about humans, non-humans, and nature in a way that brings to the surface their deep and place-based inter-connection. Coming from the perspective that a degrowth society is desirable, the article aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on degrowth transformations. To understand deeper how responsibilities towards places can be enacted, I rely on the philosophy of deep ecology and suggest that each firm can develop and manifest in its practices its own ecosophy. I conclude that contemplating responsibilities towards places can be a space where degrowth scholars and scholars of corporate social responsibility can meet in a mutually enriching dialogue.

Schools in rural areas and inclusive education – current condition and possibilities

Author(s): Jelena D. Stamatović,Jasna M. Maksimović / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 2/2023

The paper discusses the context of rural schools, and the current state and possibilities for the development of inclusive education in them. The law of the Republic of Serbia stipulates that all children must have access to and complete primary education, which implies, among other things, inclusive education, whereby each school must develop its own construct that matches the social and cultural circumstances in which the school operates, and the different needs of its students. The paper examines the presence of inclusive characteristics of education and the possibilities for improving inclusive education from the standpoint of teachers, on the sample of 160 teachers from 25 rural schools in Zlatibor district. A descriptive method and a survey method were applied. A special questionnaire for teachers, created for the purposes of this research, was used as the instrument. The results show that teachers estimate most of the characteristics of inclusive education as being present in their school, with the exception of inclusive teaching resources and assistive technologies. They see providing professional support and additional training for working with students who need support as the most important opportunity for improving the process of inclusive education.

A place of taboo – a necessary place. About building an identity of a housing estate based on shameful functions on the example of Belgian Cureghem

Author(s): Justyna Kleszcz / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 39/2022

The paper aims to analyze the phenomenon of building an identity of a place using functions that have so far been taboo – caused fear of death, impurity and decay. These include cemeteries, hospitals, morgues, landfills, but also food production facilities such as municipal slaughterhouses and livestock farms. So far, the succession of functions that followed technical development meant that they were located more and more away from downtown areas, and their place replaced those considered to better meet the condition of „urbanity”. This trend is currently being reversed. The example of the Global Abattoir housing estate illustrates the general trend in which there is a departure from the biological sphere of life towards an attempt to build identity without masking the historical role of the place. The analyzed case, however, shows a series of complicated relationships that must occur in order to balance the profane element, reaching out to the subconscious fears of a human being.

Home Office: Working and Studying Spaces in Residential Interiors during and after Forced Social Isolation

Author(s): Agata Bonenberg,Marco Lucchini / Language(s): English Issue: 39/2022

The influence of global lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the lives of many people. Once performed elsewhere, many activities had to be moved to private spaces of individual homes, influencing how people use their residential space, modifying their living and working conditions. The purpose of this study was to research the changes in the use of residential space through questionnaires addressed to respondents in five age groups (up to 25, 26–35, 36–50, 51–65, and over 65), and living or studying in the Milan area (Lombardy)—an area affected severely by COVID-19 in the period March–May 2020. The obtained questionnaire results allowed the authors to create a set of guidelines for apartment design, intended to improve their spatial performance. The observations made when creating the case study projects led to two main conclusions: First, at the level of the house plan, the arrangement of the plan should be free and adaptable, al-lowing for fast alteration by the user. Second, the project should be tailor-made, highly specialized, and purposefully designed at the level of home office design, including appropriate furnishings, technical appliances, and lighting systems.

Estetyka hiperobiektów – reprezentacje globalnego ocieplenia i archiwum antropocenu

Author(s): Andrzej Marzec / Language(s): Polish Issue: 122/2023

The author inquires about the aesthetics of hyperobjects and their visual representations in contemporary cinema. From the perspective of the Anthropocene, the most inter- esting hyperobject for him is global warming, and he finds its extensive representation in Impression météo (dir. Nico- las Carrier, Marie Ouazzani, 2019). Interpreting the film image of French artists, he focuses on presenting specific features of hyperobjects found in Timothy Morton’s work: viscosity, nonlocality, temporal undulation, interobjecti- vity, and phasing. The author demonstrates that contem- porary film art has much more to offer than the commonly available scientific images of global warming. He explains the difference between intersubjectivity and interobjectiv- ity by showing that thanks to the category of interobjec- tivity, we can think about the archive of the Anthropocene.

Kolonizacje leśnego grajobrazu. Szkic o lasach w polskich grach wideo z perspektywy studiów postkolonialnych

Author(s): Joanna Pigulak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 122/2023

The article presents an analysis of forest gamespaces in selected Polish video games. Referring to research in the field of postcolonial studies, the author shows how colonial patterns are preserved or deconstructed in designing the relationship between the player’s avatar and forest spaces. She examines relationships between characters and forest gamespaces in contexts such as colonization (Edward Said, Tomasz Z. Majkowski, Shoshana Magnet), hybrid iden- tity (Souvik Mukherjee), and diaspora (Homi K. Bhabha, Krzysztof Loska). Very often, game creators – consciously or unconsciously – replicate colonial patterns by depicting the relationship between space and figures. Despite this, some Polish video games challenge this paradigm by de- constructing it in both their narrative and gameplay me- chanics. Two examples of such games are Zaginięcie Ethana Cartera [The Vanishing of Ethan Carter] (2014) and Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the Forest (2020).

Odpowiedzialnie usytuowana krytyka afirmatywna #MeToo w badaniach teatralnych

Author(s): Monika Kwaśniewska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2023

This article seeks to develop within the theater studies discourse a research stance and method that would resonate with the transformation that has begun in theater in connection with the #MeToo movement and the discussion about violence in theater schools, creative processes, and theaters. The author’s point of departure is the observation that recent productions thematizing sexual violence in theater have been gradually turning from grievances against the abuse of power towards constructive, forward-leaning proposals for change. This process is founded on the awareness that theater makers are situated within the present systems of power and on the willingness to consider various implications of this situatedness. The proposed project of responsibly situated affirmative criticism, understood as a research-and- writing stance, is based on Donna Haraway’s concepts of situated knowledges, Ewa Domańska’s affirmative humanities, posthumanist ethics (as envisaged by Karen Barad and Monika Rogowska-Stangret), and Harry Lehmann’s affirmative criticism. The article offers an analysis of the discussion about comings-out concerning the “Gardzienice” Center for Theater Practices, as a case study aimed at a more precise delineation of the possibilities for changing the discourse on the instruments and ethics of theater research.

DOES DISPOSITIONAL POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE AFFECT PREDICT LATE-CAREER ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION? A THEORY OF PLANNED BEHAVIOR PERSPECTIVE

Author(s): Melanie Lam,Ewelina Purca / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Late-career entrepreneurship can be a good answer to the problems of an aging population—age discrimination experienced by mature workers or inadequate pensions. For this reason, it is gaining increasing interest among researchers and policymakers. However, to date, very little is known about the factors that favor or hinder intentions to become entrepreneur at the late-career stage, especially those taking a psychological perspective. The current study aims to fill this gap by testing whether dispositional affect is related to entrepreneurial intention at the late-career stage. To explain the mecha- nism of this relationship, we use the theory of planned behavior. We conducted a study that included 292 non-self-employed people aged 45–81. The results showed that neither positive affect nor negative affect are directly related to entrepreneurial intention, but these relationships are rather indirect and go through components of the theory of planned behavior. This provides insights into explanation of late-career entrepreneurial intention and can be used by researchers, policymakers and practitioners, for example in programs supporting business start-ups by people approaching retirement age.

MASKI STYLU (KOMUNIKACJA SPOŁECZNA, INTERPRETACJA, SOCJOLOGIA LITERATURY)

MASKI STYLU (KOMUNIKACJA SPOŁECZNA, INTERPRETACJA, SOCJOLOGIA LITERATURY)

Author(s): Krzysztof Łęcki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

The article deals with the sociological aspects of the interpretation of specific texts. Their authors are “men of letters” (writers, publicists). The texts themselves (mainly personal do- cument literature, but not only) do not aspire to the form of a novel or any other version of literary fiction; however, the authors use literary and, more broadly, rhetorical stylistic means with full awareness. The materials described in the article are treated as messages and “performances”. It is assumed that each act of communication (and thus also the text) initiated by the addresser is a performance in Goffman’s understanding of the term. The article starts with the interpretation proposed in Clifford Geertz’s essay, then it discusses the opportunities offered by Jan Szczepański’s constructive method in the field of qualitative sociology, as well as some – given with interpre- tative examples – aspects of Leo Strauss’ or Umberto Eco’s concept. Using the outlines of several historical but also more contemporary examples, illustrations, the article aims to sensitise sociolo- gical interpreters to the specificity of the analyzed and more contextually and rhetorically complex performance (including text or other form of communication). While the article primarily intends to support research interests in texts belonging to the literature of the “men of letters” personal document, it also has more general ambitions when it comes to the sociological interpretation of Goffman’s performances.
