Author(s): Natalia Bahlawan,Marta Szaszkiewicz,Joanna Ślaga / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

The paper attempts to contribute to the debate on the possibility of using tangible and intangible traces of scientific and cultural activity of universities in the implementation of sustainable development tasks, especially of utilising the cultural capital of museums and academic collections for building an engaged academic community. These objectives become both a need and an obligation, next to sustainability and accountability in the field of research, heritage protection, and popularisation. The aim of the paper is to discuss how the principles of sustainable development in the area of culture can be linked to the cultural heritage of universities, and how to inscribe the implementation of these principles in the university’s activity.

Prestiż. Kulturowy wymiar pracy w teatrze w aspekcie zrównoważonego rozwoju na Warmii i Mazurach

Prestiż. Kulturowy wymiar pracy w teatrze w aspekcie zrównoważonego rozwoju na Warmii i Mazurach

Author(s): Małgorzata Gałęziowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

The aim of the text is to show the role of culture in sustainable development as a process in which the values, that define work, are transferred and consolidated. The example is the prestige of artistic work in the theatre in Varmia and Masuria region. The cultural function of work is expressed here in the values that determine the prestige of workplaces and professions. Prestige is a concept that specializes and prioritizes the perception of work. It means public respect which is expressed by at least two participants of communication. The theatre is the object of expressing prestige in the performance of work. The subject of the analysis are congratulatory diplomas given to a well known actress of the Olsztyn theatre from the 1940s to 1980. The topics analysed include the reasons for expressing prestige, ways of determining merit, phrases emphasizing prestige and its non-verbal forms. The prestige of the theatre institution and prestige of persons who work there is not directly a result of their professional activities but is determined by other, external factors. The ‘subordinate’, service and non-profit character of cultural institutions and their workers is emphasized. Moreover, the prestige is expressed in a specific cultural context of a region which suffered from significant population changes resulting from the change of Polish borders after 1945.

Kobieta, balet i choreografia. Nierówna sytuacja choreografek na rynku pracy w Polsce

Kobieta, balet i choreografia. Nierówna sytuacja choreografek na rynku pracy w Polsce

Author(s): Emilia Cholewicka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

One of the key tasks of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to strengthen gender equality and the position of women around the world. Unfortunately, the artistic milieu is still far from reaching the goal set by the United Nations. When analysing the history and literature on ballet and looking at the contemporary repertoires of leading ensembles, it is easy to observe that women outnumber men, which, however, does not translate into the leading role of women in the sphere of management and creation in this artistic field (choreography). The paper is aimed at discussing the circumstances of women in the Polish labour market of choreographers in the context of the above-mentioned goal of sustainable development. The analysis is focused on the occupational situation of Polish female choreographers working in leading ballet ensembles and unravels the prevailing inequalities between women and men as well as the potential solutions to overcome them.

This kind of reflection makes also regulation of working time to be perceived through the prism of the characteristics of the employment relationship of a academic teacher since its particular content elements determine differences in defining the task-based working time. The mechanism of implementing the system of working time, tasks of a academic teacher, and in particular regulations connected with providing the teaching obligations are essential factors in defining the autonomous character of the task-based working time system of a academic teacher.

The article is an analysis of life stories of female visual artists connected with the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (Poland). It explores the specificity of women’s experiences and constitutes an attempt to examine the role models and gender hierarchies which dominate the artworld. The article emphasises two analytical categories – uncertainty and struggle – to demonstrate how they organise the life stories of female artists, and tries to explain how such life stories can lead to re-evaluation of the perception of art as a male profession and contribute to a greater appreciation of women’s activity in the artworld.

Motorcycling in a Repair Society: A Maintenance and Repair-Centered Approach to Automobility

Author(s): Gabriel Jderu / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2022

In a departure from car-centered analyses of the automobility systems, this article highlights the importance of motorcycles and motorcycling in the mobility practices of socialist countries. For at least half of the existence of socialist mobility systems, and especially during the 1950s and 1960s, there were more motorcycles on the roads than cars. Motorcycling was important in commuting, for the mobility of lower-ranking administrative personnel in the countryside, and for mass tourism and leisure. Although in that era maintenance and repair practices were equally central to motorcycling and car-driving, the distinction between user-owner and mechanic was much more fluid in the case of motorcyclists. As a result, the centrality of maintenance and repair to socialist-era motorcycling offers an ideal opportunity to enrich current interdisciplinary conversations about breakdown, maintenance, and repair. Building on the car-centered research into maintenance and repair activities, I add additional material on the nature, types, and complexity of such practices for motorcycling. I outline nine forms of material engagement with motorcycles that reference, but transcend, the current dichotomies between necessity and pleasure, the formal and the informal, the technical and the aesthetic, and the repair of existing objects and the creation of new ones.

Transactions and pricing based on the estimated selling price of the harvest in the previous season.

The evolution of the IoT technologies is spectacular in recent years, from simple devices able to receive messages and to count the number of steps, to complex devices which get information about the heartbeat rate monitoring, body position, calories burned and even warn us about the UV radiation. The large amount of data from IoT devices is important also for the business environment. We interviewed ten people from Bucharest, who already used at least one IoT device, to understand the impact of the use of IoT technologies on our lives. We identified common characteristics of the people who use IoT applications and devices, and a user profile was created. This could help to understand the advantages and disadvantages of the IoT technologies usage and how it influences people in their lives.

MODERN TRENDS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL GLOBALISM

Author(s): Lali Khikhadze / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

Future of development of national economy and business sector of any country in the modern world is connected with irreversible processes of globalization. Internationalization, transnationalization and integration processes of economic life, liberalization of foreign trade policy have become essential factors determining current status of globalization. Along with this, globalization processes are mostly contradictory and positive outcomes of such processes are mainly felt by a group of postindustrial countries. They account for the largest part that is 70-80% of the use of the global resources of raw materials and energy sources while developing countries and countries in transition mostly represent just markets for sale of products (consuming countries) and cheap labor resources. Attitude of developed states towards the developing world should be construed only on principles of equal and mutually beneficial cooperation. Globalization as a multidimensional phenomenon is regarded as a process of the world economic, political, social and cultural integration out of which economic and cultural globalization is the most notable and clearcut which is built through exchange of goods, services, capital, scientific-technical expertise, professional and cultural values between the countries.

Music and society in a globalized world

Music and society in a globalized world

Author(s): Mariselda Tessarolo / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Art is a human product in the most complete sense, not just a reflection of economic production but also a social phenomenon, since art cannot be deprived of the context by which it was produced. All music needs to be understood in the duplicity of producer (musician) and user, so much so that it becomes the object of sociology only when it gains social relevance and generates significant consequences. The social sphere itself becomes a resource of meaning for the musical world, as is shown by the practice of musicalization of daily life, or by diverse kinds of music bound to specific lifestyles and cultural ambiences. In sum, in the “global clash”, music continues to be inattentively listened to, a source of panic for (pure) supercilious musicologists, who are unable to conceive the act of listening outside of a concert hall. In the current age, it has to be acknowledged that every musical genre exists depending on other genres, and that each way of making and enjoying music depends on other ways.

Digital Literacy as a Factor of Internet Safety – A Comparative Analysis of Serbia, the Western Balkans and the Eu27 Countries

Author(s): Olga Bogdanov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Digital literacy and Internet safety become increasingly important as the number of active Internet users rapidly rises. One of the elements that represent a precondition for Internet safety is digital literacy, i.e., the ability to use the Internet in a safe and reliable way. Following EU policies, Serbia is making digital literacy one of the key indicators of national growth and market competitiveness. This paper represents a comparative analysis of the development of digital literacy in Serbia and selected EU and Western Balkan countries. The main goal is to analyse and compare the extent to which these skills differ across the selected countries. The analysis includes four dimensions: access and frequency of Internet use; development of digital skills; purpose of Internet use; and safety risks. These have been examined based on data derived from EUROSTAT, ESS and the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia databases. The analysis shows that Serbia is actively approaching the EU because the gap in digital literacy between the Serbian population and the populations of EU countries is narrowing down. While the citizens of Serbia do not yet have a sufficiently developed awareness of the safety risks, other Western Balkan countries are lagging behind even more in this respect.

FOUNDATIONS OF CAPITALIST ECONOMIC THINKING ACCORDING TO MAX WEBER

Author(s): Marius Cucu,Oana Lența / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The research proposed by Max Weber on the beginning of the capitalist economic thinking aims to transcend the appearances and conceptual surfaces that have been consolidated over the founding truths of this thinking. Thus, Weber is interested in the origin and evolution of key concepts in the capitalist economy such as computability, profit, investment, efficiency or economic capitalization. But what preoccupies him most in his studies is the basis of the capitalist economic mentality, the way in which the idea of free initiative and the motivation of its transposition in practice arose, a transposition that is only completely made in the Western civilization, the Orient keeping its openness to economic centralized elements, subject to the political factor. According to Weber, the spirit of capitalism and its economic choices are based on the vein of the Protestant theological thought. From this historical, theological and psychological foundation there is a possible understanding of capitalist economic thinking.
