Analiza sociodemografică a fenomenului îmbătrânirii populației cu implicații asupra sistemului românesc de pensii

Author(s): Georgiana Virginia Bonea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2021

The paper presents the results of a qualitative research conducted among providers of social and socio-medical services for older persons. The research objectives were to collect opinions with regard to the societal transformations that constitute risk factors for the social inclusion of the elderly; to identify the dimensions of social inclusion of the elderly in Romania most impacted by the societal transformations, as well as measures and actions that could counter acting the negative effects of social exclusion of the elderly. Data collection included semi-structured interviews with experts from social and health care services providers. Technological transformations, the ageing phenomenon, the migration, the negative perceptions regarding the elderly population; the uneven development of urban areas compared to rural areas, are most likely to influence the social exclusion of older persons. Participation in cultural, sports, and voluntary activities, access to appropriate social and health care services and housing conditions may lead to a better social inclusion. The first part of the study has as it’s main objective to expose a brief socio-demographic analysis on the problem of aging population, both in Romania and in other European Union countries. Also, the paper proposes an investigation of the risks to which the population aged 65 years and over is exposed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, based on specific comorbidities. To form an overview of these aspects, it will be used secondary data research, with information from public institutions such as: the National Institute of Statistics; Ministry of Internal Affairs; National House of Public Pensions; The Government of Romania; Financial Supervisory Authority; Eurostat; World Health Organization; United Nations Organization; Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development; as well as specific legislation and updated specialized literature. The last part of the study offers a series of conclusions which will result in several general solutions to the aging population problem.

Attitudes and perceptions of young community members towards older persons: its influence on the welfare of the elderly in a rural village in South Africa

Author(s): Misheck Dube / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The perpetual negative attitudes and perceptions of the young community members towards the older persons signal a gradual degeneration and polarization of the expected mutually harmonious relationships. This state of affairs has negatively influenced the socioeconomic and bio-psychosocial welfare of the older persons. This paper provides scant social work literature on the attitudes and perceptions of young community members towards older persons in Ramatlabama Village in the North West Province of South Africa and how these impacts on their acquisition needed welfare resources. Adopting a qualitative convenient-purposive sampling, the study engaged twenty participants who consisted of ten young and ten older persons from Ramatlabama Village. The data was analysed qualitatively and the findings of the study showed that young people’s attitudes towards and perceptions of older people were negative especially when the elderly were of the female gender denoting also patriarchal attitudes. This negative attitudinal and perceptual position jeopardises the welfare of the older persons and acquisition of the resources needed for optimal living. The conclusion reached was that the older persons are prone to negative attitudes and perceptions in the village which lessens their ability to acquire welfare resources for meeting their daily needs. Relevant recommendations have been made to facilitate social work interventions with older persons in rural communities.

Attitudes Toward Elderly Inmates in Correctional Facilities

Attitudes Toward Elderly Inmates in Correctional Facilities

Author(s): Gulshan Aliyeva / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Psychological well-being and mental health of elderly inmates are investigated by the international organizations, committees, and researchers. One of the main factors that influence their quality of life, daily mood, and well-being is interpersonal relationship. Numerous empirical data confirm the importance of interpersonal relationship, and attitudes toward aging. A definition of attitude item can be explained as an evaluation of a stimulus as reflected in our cognitive, emotional and behavioral responses to the problem (Fiske &Taylor, 1991). In the field of geriatric psychology, research has focused on the problem of interpersonal relationship between elderly people and workers in prison environments. Prison officers are in interpersonal relationship with inmates and have responsibility for the safety, and security of the prison facility, and also for managing organizational demands (Schaufeli & Peeters, 2000). Some researchers have shown that the health, and wellbeing of prison officers remain poor, and risk of being affected by different mental health problems, as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (Viotti, 2016). A systematic review of research and policy papers, articles that published on interpersonal relationship between elderly inmates and officers in correctional facilities, also effective programs outcomes were conducted. The main symptoms of the problem were measured with a special checklist and questionnaires. The quality of life was measured QOL survey that was made based on WHO (World Health Organization) QOL questionnaire. 200 elderly prisoners have been involved in the research from different prison regimes of Azerbaijan correctional facilities between 2019-2020. A systematic approach in psychological work with elderly prisoners, also officers allows for the transition from a symptomatic to a personality-oriented level of psychological impact. Psychological emotional support can renew their hope on life, influence positive outcomes of the support program. According to the results of repeated psychological research, the patient's condition was characterized by positive dynamics: the level of psychological distress and the intensity of psychological distress significantly decreased, the general internality of the personality increased, as well as the subjective assessment of personal well-being. It is necessary to focus the attention of specialists on the advisability of using psycho-educational programs in a prison environment, providing information about the aging dynamically. Such programs, used at the initial stages of work with patients, contribute to the creation of motivation for personal psychotherapy and significantly increase its effectiveness.

Autokreacja małżonków bezdzietnych do wielowymiarowego rodzicielstwa adopcyjnego. Perspektywa pedagogiczno-antropologiczna

Author(s): Arkadiusz Wąsiński / Language(s): Polish

This book sets out to address the problem of adoptive parenthood of married couples who failed to concept and thus experience unplanned childlessness. However, the author does not focus on infertility-related experiences, decision-making process, legal aspects of adoption or couple functioning as adoptive parents, but on analysis of multi-aspect process of self-creation of spouses to this form of parenthood in the pre-parental stage. The original concept presented herein - of self-creation of spouses to multidimensional adoptive parenthood - exposes two main aspects: a) parenthood as multidimensional reality; b) parenthood as a challenge for personal self-creation of spouses who experience unintentional childlessness. The main focus is on multi-contextual approach to parenthood, both adoptive and biological, as a reality of personal turn of the spouses towards a child. This reality assumes recognizing the child as equally valuable subject. Fully multidimensional nature of adoptive parenthood reveals when spouses shape their parenting relationship according to integral concept of man. This way parenthood, recognized in its fully developed, multidimensional structure, becomes the reality of personal meeting of parent and child, experiencing his or her personal presence, supporting his or her development and accompanying him or her in spiritual growth. Thus, it is identified with a reality in which a child is not treated as an object in any stage of his or her life. Personal self-creation of spouses determines their readiness to become adoptive parents in many dimensions of their functioning. It is seen holistically and involves conscious self-development, transformative biographical learning, self-reforming management of their own development and self-development of “self” as adoptive parent in agathological and axiological perspective. Complex, multidimensional character of self-creation is also discussed on the basis of integral concept of man. In this way, the problem of self-creation of spouses to adoptive parenthood is viewed in anthropological, axiological and existential context.

Az Ezüst Generáció a munkaerőpiacon. A 65+ generáció munkavállalása és időgazdálkodása

Author(s): Judit Csoba,Tibor Ladancsik / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 2/2020

Nowadays, the investigation of the labour market challenges generated by an aging society is one of the central subjects in the international academic literature. Previous research mostly analysed the labour market presence of people aged between 55 and 65. However, as the extension of the retirement age is on the agenda in several European countries, the work ability and willingness of the 65+ generation has become a key issue. Our survey, conducted in Hajdú-Bihar county, North-Eastern Hungary (N=2625, multi-stage probability sample), focuses on this relatively less investigated generation concerning labour market aspects. It investigates participation in the formal and informal labour market, and the factors that determine the time management and work involvement of the 65+ generation. In the course of the analysis we have established that the investigated age group is engaged in the formal economy at a quite low rate (2.7%), and the vast majority (93%) also does not engage in any activity in the informal economy that generates income. However, in 68.7% of the sample, we can identify certain cost-saving activities that can be considered as work. Thus, the members of the Silver Generation are involved in employment at a considerably higher rate than official employment statistics imply. The primary obstacle in explicit labour market involvement is not age, but rather education level and health status. According to our research, the work engagement of the 65+ generation is highly affected by the lack of financial need and also by ageism. 99.2% of the respondents possess transfer incomes securing their existence, so in their case there is no financial pressure towards returning to the open labour market. However, widespread stereotypes about the work involvement of elderly people are also strongly present among the 65+ generation (interiorised ageism), which significantly decreases the motivation towards employment in the formal economy of those members of the Silver Generation who are still capable of work activity.

BABA YAGA: RUS FOLKLORUNDA CADI VE ANNE ARKETİPİ BAĞLAMINDA YAŞLANAN KADIN BEDENİNİN ŞEYTANLAŞTIRILMASI

BABA YAGA: RUS FOLKLORUNDA CADI VE ANNE ARKETİPİ BAĞLAMINDA YAŞLANAN KADIN BEDENİNİN ŞEYTANLAŞTIRILMASI

Author(s): Duygu Özakın / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 37/2022

This study evaluates corporeal representations of Baba Yaga as a negative reflection of the mother archetype in Russian folklore through feminist revisionist mythology. Punitive, retributive and merciless heroines often appear as a “witch” or a malicious woman contrary to the image of nurturing, protective and affectionate mother. According to these uncanny, ambiguous, dual features the female heroines are described as frightening beings not only by their actions but also by their physical appearance. In Russian folklore, the witch prototype corresponds to an old female figure called Baba Yaga. The ambivalent nature of Baba Yaga, which combines benevolent and threatening qualities, has been the most noticeable feature of her for folklorists. Baba Yaga lives alone in her hut surrounded by skulls and bones in the depths of the dark forest and lives independently, far from the pressure and control mechanisms of the patriarchal value system. Often portrayed as a childless woman, who lives alone, Baba Yaga is depicted with pejorative qualities such as “old”, “dried”, “ugly” or “wicked” in addition to the emphasis on her uncanny nature. The predominance of the malevolent qualities attributed to her makes the positive functions in the initiation ceromony obscure, and Baba Yaga became a symbol of fear and insult due to the grotesque nature of her corporeal qualities. This study examines the linearities between the demonic qualities attributed to women, who have been accused of being witches throughout history and the characteristics of Baba Yaga through feminist revisionist mythology. The study discusses that when the female body is identified with fertile soil, its positive reflections are highlighted and the body is associated with moisture and abundance. However, when the female body loses fertility and moisture, its archetypically negative reflections begin to be emphasized more and the body is associated with demonic powers.

Beyond Traditional Social Work with Elderly: Reflections from Ukraine in Times of Social Distancing

Beyond Traditional Social Work with Elderly: Reflections from Ukraine in Times of Social Distancing

Author(s): Tetyana Semigina,Olena Karagodina,Oksana Pozhydaieva / Language(s): English Issue: 05/2021

The global COVID-19 pandemic envokes numerous challenges in many areas of societies, including social services. The idea of ‘social distancing’ contradicts the whole idea of social work and inevitably causes deepening social exclusion. This study is aimed to analyse peculiarities of Ukrainian social workers’ activities under severe quarantine restrictions or lockdown. Special attention is paid to local social services for the elderly as a group recognised as most vulnerable to COVID-19. A survey of representatives of territorial centres of social services in Ukraine, conducted in August 2020, revealed some problems caused by restrictive quarantine measures and positive changes in the centres. The study highlights some surprising contradictions in the impact of the pandemic on social work practice with the elderly. Social services providers in local communities (territorial centres of social services, social services centres for families, children, youth, etc.) received almost no additional support during the quarantine. Yet, they consider introducing new, distant forms of communication, adjusting the work schedule, etc., as positive changes in service provision. The study determines that the response to the challenges of a problematic situation depends on local characteristics and mostly on human resources – work organisation and professional adaptability. An important role belongs to the ability of social workers to act in emergencies, the availability of standard procedures, protocols, and resources for use in such situations, understanding the need to adhere to values of social solidarity. The specific applications from the study results are drawn for Ukrainian social work.

BIOETHICS, LAW AND AGING - LEGAL AND ETHICAL CHALLENGES OF AGING AND ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION

Author(s): Tomislav Nedić / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The issue of organ donation and transplantation is, in the first place, an issue of medical excellence of transplantation teams, but also a controversial issue with doubtful bioethical, legal, cultural, religious, and other questions. Since medical research are improving constantly, research in the field of organ transplantation is setting new interesting (bio) ethical and legal questions. According to the last population census, there are approximately one million inhabitants in the Republic of Croatia who are older than 60 years and who are also more likely to be on the organ transplantation candidate’s list than the younger inhabitants, because of the various health problems of the aging process. Also, according to research, the median age of 150 patients on chronic dialysis at the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek is 65.5 years. Since bioethics is a scientific discipline that studies all issues related to life itself, organ transplantation and aging are some of the crucial fields of the human aspect of bioethics. By connecting these two issues, this chapter aims to expound the main (bio)ethical and legal problems of organ donation and transplantation and put them into the context of the issue of aging in the Republic of Croatia. The main questions that may arise are what the main problems of older people are when it comes to organ donation and transplantation, whether they are aware of them and if there is any kind of age discrimination in the process of organ allocation. The author will try to point out these and other bioethical questions when it comes to aging and organ donation and transplantation, and also set a new scheme of awareness in relation to this issue.

Can Romania’s Labour Market thrive in the Age of Population Ageing? A Bayesian VAR Approach

Author(s): Lucian Adrian Sala / Language(s): English Issue: 66/2020

After the fall of communism and the transition to a democratic and open society, Romania has been making significant progress adapting its economy to rising demands from internal and external forces with the goal of becoming an integral part of a much larger system of trade and commerce within the European Union. As many Member States, Romania is undergoing a severe demographic transformation, defined by decreasing birth rates, a higher life expectancy known as population ageing. Similarly, due to harsh economic conditions and social factors, a large number of capable young adults have migrated to other Member States in search of higher wages and better conditions resulting in challenges for labour market efficiency. Romania's current labour market requirements for employees are covered by a slowly shrinking group of adults, leading to shortages of labour resources, with significant consequences for economic growth. This paper aims to evaluate future employment trends under current economic and demographic conditions. To these ends, a VAR model will be employed to assess the effects that economic and demographic factors have on the employment rate. The expected results are of a slowing down of economic growth due to the expected decline in labour resources.
