Albotina, loc spiritual și identitar pentru românii dintre Vidin, Dunăre și Timoc

On the road that connects the villages Gradeţ and Rabova at 20 km from Vidin, in a wood clearing known as Albotina, guarded by a former Ortodox monastery builded in the XIIIth century, the Romanian community from Bulgaria gather on the second day of Easter celebrate an important holiday. Here they have a sort of a ritual round dance dedicated to all young people who died in the year passed. One of the community leader told us that till 20 years ago they held the ritual ”frăsinelul” a custom which surviving into the entire area of Oltenia county Romania. Nowdays ”frasinelul” had become a modern folk festival. This article presents historical and ethnographic information about this spiritual place of the Romanian comunities from the Vidin county between the Timoc river and the Danube concerning to the last ethnographic researches conducted in 2009.

The article presents wedding and the musical component of the wedding ritual among the Bulgarian Muslims from the region of Teteven. Some of the musical examples, examined in it, are “taken out” from the memories of the informants, others are parts of the wedding, as it could be observed today. The text makes an attempt at a reconstruction of the wedding rituals among this population, which is descriptive to some extent. This is necessary for clarifying the ritual context, in which the concrete musical pattern existed, or exists nowadays. Special attention is paid to the music (both vocal and instrumental), performed at the wedding table and the wedding horo dance and especially the regional variant of the Payduchko horo and its place in the ritual. The text draws parallels with the wedding misic of the Christian population in neighboring settlements, and in northeastern Bulgaria, proving the unity of wedding rituals in the region and in northern Bulgaria as a whole.

In Edward Gorey’s numerous scenes of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and afternoon teas, food and drink often feature with more or less prominence and are sometimes even found in the titles of his books, such as in The Fatal Lozenge (1960) or The Unknown Vegetable (1995). Their seemingly innocent appearance is often tied to violence or death: a head is discovered in a breadbox, a woman murders her husband by lacing his tea with atropine, a boy dies of exposure after being punished for “splashing his soup”, and several characters are consumed by more or less fantastic creatures. And yet, throughout all such gruesome events, Gorey’s characteristically playful and absurd humour adds levity to scenes of food-related death, misery, downfall, and even murder. Whether much attention is drawn to such events (such as in The Unknown Vegetable, where the entire story revolves around the discovery of a giant turnip-like vegetable that leads to a woman being buried alive) or whether they are merely mentioned in offhanded comments, Gorey couches them in a frame of the ridiculous and the nonsensical. It is therefore the aim of this paper to explore how Gorey achieves this curious combination of the grotesque and the humorous in scenes revolving around food, and how this approach extends to a general confusion of tone in his darkly funny, seriocomic creations in which any manner of horror may be lurking in peaches, cakes, crackers, boiled turnips, a recipe for fudge, a family picnic, or under a haunted tea cosy.
