Zrównoważony rozwój a bezpieczeństwo człowieka

Zrównoważony rozwój a bezpieczeństwo człowieka

Author(s): Waldemar Kozaczyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2012

The concept of sustainable development (created in 1975 by ONZ Environment Protection Program) has a couple of synonyms in Polish: eco-development, dynamically durable development, and self- supportive development. Eco-development is a course of economic development that does not disturb human environment in a significant and irreparable way, and combines the natural systems with the rights of economics. The concept of durable development ties institutional and political elements; socio-economic and ecological elements; and also the elements of spatial structures and of human security in general sense. Until now, the concept of ecodevelopment has been the only one which in reality is making its way towards maintaining civilization and safe future of the world. The assumption of eco-development is to achieve progress through fuller and more appropriate use of potential human capacities and of environmental concerns in a way which will guarantee their positive functioning, providing affluence and diversity of future generations to come.

Globalization – a Catalyst for Migrations in the Modern World

Globalization – a Catalyst for Migrations in the Modern World

Author(s): Mariana Lambova / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Population migrations have played a huge and multifaceted role in the development of mankind, being a form of adaptation to changing living conditions. This complex social process is closely related to the level of economic development and territorial location of industries in different regions of the world. In the context of globalization, intensive migrations in the world bring to the fore the problem of demographic freedom, understood as the protection of human life and its continuous renewal. Both receiving and giving territories today face the problem of deformation of their demographic structure, lower birth rates and increased mortality. Migration in a globalizing world exacerbates the problem of human security, as a set of notions of the unity of social conditions that ensure a dignified life, prosperity and freedom.

İlköğretim Hayat Bilgisi Kitaplarında Çevre Duyarlığının Yeri ve Önemi

İlköğretim Hayat Bilgisi Kitaplarında Çevre Duyarlığının Yeri ve Önemi

Author(s): Fatma Gürdoruk,Akile Aykulu,Seda Gürdoruk / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 33/2024

In this research, environmental awareness, which is included in the scope of value education, was examined in the Life Sciences textbooks, which are taught as a pivot lesson from the 1st grade to the 3rd grade of primary school, where compulsory education begins in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The research was prepared according to the qualitative research method. Content analysis method was used to analyze the obtained data. In accordance with the purpose of the research, primary school 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade Life Sciences textbooks prepared for the 2022-2023 academic year were examined. The findings obtained from the research were divided into themes and tables were created in line with the themes obtained for each grade level. The findings obtained were supported by relevant visuals. As a result of the research, the most findings about environmental awareness were found in 3rd grade Life Science books, that is, the issue of environmental awareness was mentioned mostly in 3rd grade books. The most findings from the 3rd grade book belong to the visual field theme. The class with the least findings regarding environmental awareness is the 1st grade Life Sciences books. In the 1st grade Life Sciences books, where there were the least findings, the area where the most findings were obtained was again the visual area. In the light of the findings obtained in the research, it can be said that the Life Sciences books taught in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades of primary school are not sufficient to provide students with environmental awareness. When all the books at these three levels are examined, all themes other than the visual field have not been sufficiently processed and emphasized. At the same time, no activity was found in the books examined that would raise students to the practical level of environmental awareness. Depending on the findings obtained from the research, our suggestions include that the prepared life sciences textbooks should be rearranged on the subject of "environmental awareness and sensitivity" and include activities that will raise the students to the application level, and that these activities should be treated as a common theme not only in the life sciences book but in all courses.

Protection of the Environment during War in Islamic Law Literature

Protection of the Environment during War in Islamic Law Literature

Author(s): Veysel Nargül / Language(s): English Issue: 33/2024

Human-centered environmental issues are a phenomena as old as human history. In the earlier periods, it was not regarded as a common problem because environmental damage was not at a level that would negatively affect the ecosystem and living beings. In the modern period, especially after the industrial revolution, some solutions have been developed at national and international levels after taking into consideration the damage of environmental problems to living beings and the ecosystem on a global scale. Although some countries that were experiencing these problems on a national scale made some progress individually, the 1972 Stockholm Declaration was the first time environmental issues were placed at the forefront of international concerns, and marked the start of a dialogue at the international level to protect the environment. The Qur'an does not approve any illegitimate war against a state or a community. There is no recorded war by Prophet Muhammad against a community without a legitimate reason. Islamic law proposes maximum legality and morality during a legitimate war. It is also seen that this Islamic perspective is grasped in terms of protecting the environment. When analyzing the opinion of jurists of Islamic Law, it is seen that unnecessary destruction of the environmental values such as houses, trees and green spaces is prohibited, as a basic principle. Therefore, Islamic jurists' perspectives on provisions concerning the destruction of environmental elements like trees, buildings, and green spaces are constrained by military necessity only. Consequently, environmental damage during warfare is deemed permissible solely for defensive purposes. However, this legitimacy is contingent upon avoiding unnecessary demolition.

Which index is better for assessing the success of reclamation: Naturalness or hemeroby?

Which index is better for assessing the success of reclamation: Naturalness or hemeroby?

Author(s): N. Podpriatova,O. M. Kunakh,O. Zhukov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The destruction of soil and vegetation caused by mining, if not prevented through careful planning, is usually extreme, as the original ecosystems have been grossly disturbed or buried in the mining process. A radical reconstruction is therefore necessary. In nature, this happens through the well-known processes of primary succession, without human intervention. In the interests of the economy and the preservation of our natural resources, reclamation should try to involve the same processes. When planning reclamation, it is crucial to clearly define goals, objectives and success criteria to allow for systematic reclamation. The need for methods to assess the effectiveness in achieving environmental and social goals is increasing, especially if agricultural land is to be restored. Over time, reclamation goals may need to be modified depending on the direction of the reclamation succession. The reclamation of mined areas requires the application of monitoring tools to understand the achievement of potential success. This problem can be solved by studying the biodiversity of plant communities and soil factors of mining areas as habitats in industrialized post-mining landscapes. Thus, the reclamation of territories disturbed by industrial activities is planned with the need to correct the trajectory of the restoration process, so it requires indicators that can be used to monitor the success of the planned process. The article tests the following hypotheses: 1) the dynamics of the reclamation process can be monitored using the indices of naturalness and hemeroby; 2) at the initial stages of reclamation, the hemeroby index has an advantage due to its greater sensitivity in this range of anthropogenic transformation levels. The plant community formed as a result of spontaneous growth of the reclamation sites was represented by 70 species of vascular plants. The projective vegetation cover was 22.0± 0.30%. In one test plot, 8.4± 0.1 plant species were found. The analysis of the synoptic phytosociological table revealed that the vegetation cover of the reclamation site was represented by nine associations from the vegetation classes Artemisietea vulgaris and Stellarietea mediae. The hemeroby of the communities averaged 85.0±0.22. The lowest level of hemeroby was found within the Cirsio-Lactucetum serriolae association. The average level of hemeroby was found for the associations Medicagini lupulinae-Agropyretum repentis, Ambrosio artemisiifoliae-Cirsietum setosi and Carduo acanthoidis-Onopordetum acanthi. The highest level of hemeroby was found for the associations Agropyretum repentis and Convolvulo arvensis-Agropyretum repentis. The highest level of hemeroby was observed in those plant communities formed on lithozems on the red-brown clays, and the lowest formed on the pedozems. A negative correlation was found between hemeroby and naturalness for all lithozems. No statistically significant correlation was found for pedozems. For the classification of associations, environmental factors such as salt content in the soil solution, nitrogen content, ombroclimate, light regime, and naturalness are of greatest importance. The traditional application of the hemeroby scale is to assess the level of anthropogenic transformation of an ecosystem, i.e. to quantify how far the ecosystem has deviated from its natural state. In our study, we use the hemeroby index to observe how the plant community returns to its natural state, which can be considered as a marker of the effectiveness of the reclamation process. This approach allows us to contrast the indicators of naturalness and hemeroby, which are formally symmetrical: the higher the hemeroby, the lower the naturalness should be. In a wide range of levels of anthropogenic pressure, this pattern is certainly true. The peculiarity of the naturalness index is that it is more sensitive in the range of anthropogenic transformation that occurs at the initial stages of deviation of the natural community from the natural state at low levels of anthropogenic impact. In turn, the hemeroby index is more sensitive to changes in the community under conditions of a high level of anthropogenic transformation.

Korzystanie ze środowiska a korzystanie z wód. Próba porównania regulacji prawnych

Author(s): Ryszard Mikosz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2024

The subject of the considerations contained in the study is an attempt to determine whether when creating the content of Art. 4 of the Act of April 27, 2001, Environmental Protection Law, was used as a model for solutions regarding the use of water contained in the Water Law Act. This view is expressed quite often in the reference literature. The analysis carried out in this paper proves that such a view is not sufficiently justified, as evidenced primarily by significant differences in the regulation method used in Art. 4 and in the Water Law Act.

Author(s): Yurii IRKHIN,Olena KRYZYNA,Yevhenii KULHINSKYI,Yana SUKHANOVA,Nataliia KRYZYNA / Language(s): English Issue: 87/2024

The relevance of the topic of the psychological impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the civilian population of Ukraine is due to the urgent need to understand and minimise the negative psychosocial consequences of the conflict. Mass displacement, loss of loved ones, economic instability and constant threat to life have a significant impact on the mental health of the population, creating new challenges for the healthcare system and social institutions. The study aims to investigate the psychological consequences of war for the civilian population of Ukraine. Its object is the mental state and socio-psychological characteristics of people affected by the war. The methodological basis of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the scientific literature, covering theoretical and empirical works in the fields of crisis psychology and psychosocial support. The results of the study showed that the most common psychological problems among the affected population are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and other psychosomatic disorders. In addition, the study revealed the impact of the war on social ties, increased isolation, and difficulties in adapting to new living conditions, especially among internally displaced persons. The study’s practical significance lies in the fact that its results can be used to develop effective psychosocial support programmes for different groups of people affected by the war. The proposed measures are aimed at restoring mental health, improving adaptation and reducing the risk of developing long-term psychological consequences of war.

The Role of Technology in Redefining Human Identity and Society

The Role of Technology in Redefining Human Identity and Society

Author(s): Nataliia SEREDIUK,Olha POTISHCHUK,Tamara RUDENKO,Mariia SHEVCHENKO,Maryna YAKOVENKO / Language(s): English Issue: 87/2024

In the period of globalisation, special attention is paid to the spiritual crisis and the loss of traditional values, emphasising the need to search for global unifying values. The article aims to study the influence of technological progress on human identity and society as a whole. The authors define the terms “human identity”, “technologisation”, and “technological progress”. They describe the main directions of technologisation’s influence on the individual and their self-awareness of identity and outline the concept of sustainable development aimed at preventing destructive conflicts. They analyse the value-normative foundations of modern society in the context of globalisation and explore the main principles of sustainable development that have gained general recognition, including direct ethical requirements present in the ecological imperative of humanity’s responsibility for the planet’s fate. Based on the analysis of existing data, the article identifies several vectors of technological impact, such as the implementation of technical means into the structure of identity, psychological experiences of loss of self-identity and privacy, changes in the objects and rules of identification, and the transformation of identification processes. In modern society, technologies are becoming “psycho-technologies”, influencing mental processes and human relationships, causing changes in the structure of human identity and identification processes under the influence of technological progress. It is established that the main factors of technological progress affecting personal identity include the loss of self-identity and privacy, the modification of identification processes, the change in objects and rules of identification, the integration of technical means into the structure of self-identity.

INVOLVEMENT OF ESG IN THE FOUNDATION OF

INVOLVEMENT OF ESG IN THE FOUNDATION OF RESPONSIBLE FINANCIAL DECISIONS

Author(s): Dana-Claudia COJOCARU / Language(s): English Issue: 26/2022

The topic we address in this research is highly topical and is of concern to all governments at the highest scientific, environmental, decision-making, and financial levels. The major challenge we face today is climate change, which is one of the greatest threats to the environment, the social framework, and the economic framework. The effects of climate change are increasingly visible globally and can be seen with the naked eye in the intense heat waves, droughts, floods, and fires that have been caused in recent years. There is therefore an urgent need to take effective and accelerated action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The European Green Deal recognizes the crucial role of taxation in the transition to a green economy, and this could lead to the implementation of various financial instruments that can be significant in meeting the proposed targets. One such instrument is environmental taxes, also known as green taxes. Although these taxes have been introduced to reduce pollution, these fiscal measures have not always had the desired effect. In addition, the existence of the 'polluter pays' principle means that large sums of money collected for the budget 'overlook' the serious effects of climate change. Also, the existence of contradictory results in the studies analyzed leads us to undertake our statistical investigation.

Problématique de l’approvisionnement en eau potable et maladies diarrhéiques dans la sous-préfecture de Ouéllé (Côte d’Ivoire)

Author(s): Moussa COULIBALY,Kpaka Sabine DIOBO Epse DOUDOU,Boris-Kévin KOUASSI / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2024

Drinking water is a major concern for households in the Ouellé sub-prefecture. Its availability is a real problem for the population. This study aims to show the link between water supply methods and diarrhoeal diseases in the Ouellé sub-prefecture. The methodological approach involved analysing epidemiological data from the various dispensaries and CSUs in Ouellé from 2016 to 2020 and field surveys of 378 households. The results show that the lack of a permanent stream in the area makes it difficult for SODECI to supply drinking water to the population, particularly during the dry season. This dry period sees the highest rate of diarrhoea. From 2016 to 2020, the Ouellé sub-prefecture recorded 1,033 cases of diarrhoeal disease. During the dry season, 54.6% of cases of diarrhoea were diagnosed in this sub-prefecture. Households near water points suffer less from water-borne diseases than those further away. The construction of a new water tower would facilitate access to water for the entire population. Improving drinking water and sanitation in the villages could reduce the risk of diarrhoeal diseases.

Author(s): Imtiaz AHMAD,Wang PING,Abdur RAZZAQ,Bilal Jan Haji MUHAMMAD,Wajid ALI / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

This study examines the ecological and thermal impacts of urbanization in Malakand Division, Pakistan, from 2003 to 2023, focusing on the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) effect and human thermal comfort (HTC). Using multi-temporal Landsat (5 & 8) imagery, Land Surface Temperature (LST) data, and the Urban Thermal Field Variance Index (UTFVI), we analyze urban expansion, land-use changes, and their thermal implications. Results show significant urban growth, with built-up areas increasing from 11,773.5 km² to 12,519.09 km², while vegetative land decreased by 7.5%. The average LST rose by 3.67°C, and UHI intensity increased from 15.96% in 2003 to 19.08% in 2023. Spatial analysis highlights higher LST and UTFVI values in urbanized and transition zones, indicating worsening thermal conditions. These findings underscore the need for sustainable urban planning to mitigate UHI effects, enhance HTC, and promote green space development. This research provides critical insights for urban planners and policymakers in Malakand Division and other rapidly urbanizing regions.
