A bibliometric analysis on dependency theory

A bibliometric analysis on dependency theory

Author(s): Saleh Arman,Tazin Ahmed / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2021

Dependency theory, established after World War II, is a popular theory among economists to portray the relationship between the underdeveloped and the developed countries that conditions the ability of the underdeveloped countries to develop. Several concepts have been merged into this area from different corners, making it interdisciplinary. As a lucrative area of interest in research, the study would like to assess how the concept of dependency theory has been widely accepted among authors from different corners and schools of thoughts and how their research outputs make a significant notation in this area. The research conducted a bibliometric analysis on dependency theory. 1074 Scopus indexed documents in English were considered. The study covered the two pillars of bibliography analysis: performance analysis and science mapping. The study used several formulas to calculate parameters of performance analysis and availed Vosviewer software to make maps of science-mapping analysis. The study concluded that dependency theory is a significant theory in economics and has significant implications in different research publications. This bibliometric analysis surfaces the significance of this theory which would attract researchers in incorporating more interdisciplinary research.

A Competitive Analysis of East African Cement Companies using the High Performance Organisation Framework

A Competitive Analysis of East African Cement Companies using the High Performance Organisation Framework

Author(s): André de Waal,Evans Makini Osano / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2020

Sub-standard infrastructure is one of the most significant challenges for economic development in East Africa. Specifically, the availability of affordable, locally produced cement is critical to infrastructural and economic development and job creation in the region. Thus, it is critical for cement companies to achieve better operational and financial results so they can satisfy the need for higher-quality cement for infrastructure projects and to deal with increasing environmental issues. In this article we evaluate, using de Waal’s high performance organisations (HPO) framework, the quality of three cement companies in Kenya and Tanzania to identify improvements these companies can make to their internal organisation and operations so they can achieve better financial and operational results. The research results indicate that whilst all three companies were yet to achieve HPO status, the best performing company with the highest HPO score also had the best financial performance over the past 10 years. The research also resulted in a series of recommendations on the basis of the weaknesses identified in the cement companies.

A contribution to the debate about social recognition of marriage-like and family-like social phenomena

A contribution to the debate about social recognition of marriage-like and family-like social phenomena

Author(s): Uroš V. Šuvaković / Language(s): English,Serbian / Issue: 3/2021

The paper elaborates on the relation between marriage and the family, on one hand, and marriage-like and family-like homosexual unions such as so-called homosexual marriage and same-sex union (or same-sex life partnership). With a brief theoretical introduction and a comparative overview of the manner in which this matter is regulated in other countries, certain solutions are analyzed from the Proposal Draft Law on Same-Sex Unions of Serbia (2021). It is indicated that it is no longer possible to equalize marriage and the family with the same-sex union because the content of these concepts is substantially different. The society is interested in protecting marriage and the family and to take special care of them since they perform extremely important social functions, whereas without some of them the survival of the society itself would be brought to question (the reproduction function). On the other hand, homosexual marriage and/or same-sex unions do not perform any social function, but are formed exclusively for the purpose of relatively longer-standing satisfaction of sexual needs of same-sex partners. Since the society and the state do not protect marriage only because sexuality is regulated within it, but because it legitimizes sexual relationships aimed at having children, in the event of homosexual marriage-like unions it should also be proceeded in an identical manner: solely those rights and obligations of partners deriving from a relatively longer-standing homosexual partnership should be legally regulated. Moreover, having in mind the principle that every man’s right is limited by other people’s rights, it is impermissible to give priority to the protection of the rights of same-sex partners for the purpose of longer-standing homosexual relationships over the protection of children’s rights. Children need both a father and a mother (an ideal condition), and the family in which they will be socialized. In line with those homosexual marriage-like unions, neither adoption nor assisted insemination can be allowed.

A Crisis Like No Other: Will Covid-19 Change Capitalism?

A Crisis Like No Other: Will Covid-19 Change Capitalism?

Author(s): Gökhan Ak / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

The aim of this research is to explore how the Covid-19 pandemic will likely affect and change the future paths and implementations of the capitalism which is universally the last and most effective economic system of the globe. The intention in trying to make an examination like this lies in the fact that a global crisis like Covid-19 pandemic seems to no other risks or threats that humanity faced since the end of World War II. The importance of this research lies in the crystal clear global situations that international relations and globalization will never be the same as they were once in the past after Covid-19 pandemic resolution. The methodology for this research will make use of applying the content and document analysis research techniques as well as hermeneutic approach by achieving literature survey through scientific books, articles, reports and thesis. Recent decades clearly showed up to international community that capitalism and globalization were in crisis. However, it seems likely that the Covid-19 pandemic could change it forever, in favor of workers and those in greatest need. The reason behind is that Covid-19 pandemic has put a magnifying glass over the many inequalities of the global economy and society. The World Economic Forum has already called for a “great reset” of capitalism. It’s emblematic of today’s capitalist society that groups of people get left behind, and it’s the job of policy makers to try to fix that. The possible findings of this research may recount that it will be hard to sweep all the global economic issues under the rug again when the pandemic is over since “We are pregnant with change,” as said by MIT economics professor Daron Acemoglu.

A Miscellaneous Perspective on the Issue of Modernity

A Miscellaneous Perspective on the Issue of Modernity

Author(s): Oana Tătaru / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

The assessment of a concept had constantly been a challenging phase in respect of the precise moment of appearance, all the more as the postulation – modernity- was considered controversial and complex along its entire history. An aspect that had to be mentioned was the fact according to which the idea of modernity could not be conceived but within the parameters of a particular awareness of the time, namely the historic, linear and irreversible one. Modernity would be purposeless if a society had not regarded the temporal-sequential concept of history as representative and organized temporal categories in accordance with a mythical and recurrent pattern. Although the notion of modernity was assimilated almost automatically to secularism, the main corresponding constitutive element had been the sense of unrepeatable time, not compatible with a religious Weltanschauung. The premodern societies highly considered the religious doctrines in contrast to actual realities the public opinion of which did not appear as the prerogative of an educated minority, but a constantly enhanced forum of social communication.

A Predictive Model of Youth Bystanders’ Helping Attitudes

A Predictive Model of Youth Bystanders’ Helping Attitudes

Author(s): Dana Rad,Evelina Balaș,Sonia Ignat,Gavril Rad,Daniel Dixon / Language(s): English / Issue: 1 Sup2/2020

One of the direct effect of current COVID-19 pandemic’ social distancing on an unspecified period of time urges us to compensate our lack of physical connection with our readiness in the online environments, especially social media platforms. Present research investigates to which extent the internet content awareness construct, difficulties in emotional regulation and online duality have an impact on predicting future helping attitudes of bystanders. In order to investigate the eligibility of this prediction model, our team has advanced the Erasmus+ funded project Hate’s Journey. In 2019, our research team has designed a multiple specific sections online questionnaire addressing 206 youth from Latvia, Turkey, Spain and Romania. We have used a multiple linear regression analysis. The obtained results validate our hypothesis, confirming that if an individual is characterized by a decreased internet content awareness, a high level of difficulties in emotional regulation and increased online duality, then there is a 37% probability that the youth bystanders will develop a lack of helping attitudes towards the victims when facing a digital hate speech context. Conclusions and implications regarding to the current pandemic social distancing and digital closeness effects over the prosocial behaviour are discussed.

A preliminary analysis of the results in the project 'Typologies of underdevelopment and marginalization in rural localities and small towns in Romania'

A preliminary analysis of the results in the project 'Typologies of underdevelopment and marginalization in rural localities and small towns in Romania'

Author(s): Mihnea Preotesi,Cristina Tomescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2020

The project begins from the coordinates provided by the sociological literature which show that local underdevelopment is the result of structural factors as lack of employment and the predominance of employment in (subsistence) agriculture, lack of infrastructure (access to public utilities such as gas, drinking water or paved roads) but also the distance to the nearest city that could be a pole of development or human capital (the education stock of the local population) and it tries to refine the analysis by overlapping the typology looking at local contexts and by deciphering the factors and mechanisms of underdevelopment at local level. The proposed approach has an exploratory character. The article explain this approach in the first part, and in the second part presents a synthesis of the results of the analysis of the data collected in Alba county (as an exploratory case study) for testing the research tools in the first phase of the project.

A TYPOLOGY OF SHRINKING CITIES: THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DYNAMIC OF ROMANIAN URBAN NETWORK 2010-2020

A TYPOLOGY OF SHRINKING CITIES: THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DYNAMIC OF ROMANIAN URBAN NETWORK 2010-2020

Author(s): Norbert Petrovici,Vlad Bejinariu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

The aim of the paper is to open the issue of multiple shrinkage trajectories in a context of extended urbanisation (Keil 2018) by delineating the different trajectories of Romanian cities. We employed principal component analysis to allow for a multi-criterial classification of Romanian cities based on k-means cluster analysis. Beyond the dominant representation of shrinkage as a process that is mainly correlated with population loss and economic decline, this paper calls for bridging together distinct dimensions which have been either under-studied, such as the aspect of human development, or studied separately across the existing literature, such as governance of shrinkage and economic growth. Therefore, the typology developed here accounts for understanding the process of shrinkage as a complex process, having multiple causes, which determine peculiar trajectories. The outcome confirms the existence of distinct and highly localised shrinkage identities (Martinez-Fernandez, Audirac, et al. 2012). We show that regrowth is not strictly related to the urban core, but it has more to do with a process of complexification of the landscape and social relations existing at the periphery of the city. Shrinking core cities coexists with growing peri-urban areas.

About Adoption and People Who Can Adopt in Romania

About Adoption and People Who Can Adopt in Romania

Author(s): Ciprian Raul Romiţan / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Although, in principle, any person can adopt and become an adoptive parent, regardless of their marital status (married or single), sex, race, nationality, etc., the Romanian legislation in this area establishes a series of requirements for this. For this purpose, the law on the legal regime of adoption stipulates that the persons or families wishing to adopt must fulfill the moral guarantees, as well as the material conditions necessary for the child’s raising, education and harmonious development. The fulfillment of the guarantees and conditions provided by law, as well as the existence of the parental skills, is certified by the general directorate of social assistance and child protection within the territorial area of which the adoptee or the adoptive family resides, by issuing a certificate following the evaluation performed according to the provisions of the adoption law. This study will analyze the requirements to be met by the persons or families wishing to adopt, namely: the age of the adopter, the full exercise capacity, the moral and material ability to adopt, the consent of the adopter and the consent of the adopter’s spouse.

Acceptance and diffusion of hybrid corn seed in Vojvodina/Serbia

Acceptance and diffusion of hybrid corn seed in Vojvodina/Serbia

Author(s): Dejan R. Janković,Dragan M. Milić,Marina D. Novakov / Language(s): English,Serbian / Issue: 4/2021

The paper analyzes the modernization process of agricultural production in Serbia/Vojvodina, observed through the intensification of mercantile corn production that takes place by introducing the genetics of high-yielding seeds. This process is analyzed for the period of last 20 years through the theoretical-hypothetical framework of the theory of diffusion of innovations, in this case, the diffusion of seeds of non-Serbian seed companies (after 2000), which resulted in more intensive production, higher yields and different production practice of farmers in Serbia. The empirical research was conducted on a sample of 110 farmers and very similar to previous research on this topic, proved the innovativeness of certain producer groups and the relations between the diffusion of this innovation and the size of farms, values, habits and behavior patterns of farmers.

Access to justice - Trust and perceptions of the Roma minority

Access to justice - Trust and perceptions of the Roma minority

Author(s): Gabriela PETRE / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Discrimination and inequality for various reasons continue to be a reality of everyday life throughout the European Union, as confirmed by the results of surveys and various national studies and research published in recent years. At the level of vulnerable groups (including people in poverty, ethnic minorities, young people, the elderly or women) discrimination and inequality are more pronounced. Access to justice for these disadvantaged groups should contribute to increasing inclusion, increasing socio-economic integration, but barriers (lack of education, information, lack of identity documents, lack of material resources, etc.) in the way of access to justice are sometimes too extended for these people. Thus, the inability of disadvantaged people to access legal services is both a result and a cause of the low degree of inclusion and development, as well as the high degree of vulnerability. This article highlights the trust and perceptions of Roma minority in Romania in the justice system in the context in which justice is still far from meeting the expectations of citizens, access to justice being unequal especially due to geographical, economic, cultural, social, psychological / temporal barriers. The article makes an important contribution to a broader understanding of the size and nature of the legal needs of members of the Roma minority and the obstacles they face in seeking legal protection in general, but especially for guiding public policies in the field of justice based on reality perceived by those involved in this complex phenomenon.
