Croatian Youth and Populism: A Mixed Methods Analysis of the Populism “Breeding Ground” among the Youth in the City of Zagreb

Author(s): Augustin Derado,Vanja Medugorac,Vanja Dergic / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2016

A number of recent international studies have reported the growing electoral success of populist parties among younger age groups. In this study, authors analysed the “breeding ground” for populism among the youth in Zagreb using the results of the Memory, Youth, Political Legacy and Civic Engagement (MYPLACE) project in Croatia. A mixed methods approach was employed with thematic analysis of 61 semi-structured interviews and regression analysis on a survey sample data of 1,216 young people aged 16–25. Qualitative analysis indicated analogies to Cas Mudde’s three core concepts of populism (the “good people”, the “bad elite” and the “general will”) among interviewees’ opinions. In addition, common ideological features of populism (nationalism and radical egalitarianism) were to a degree present among the interviewees’ attitudes. In the quantitative part of this paper, the authors narrowed the analysis of populism to the radical right variant of populism, and – given the lack of prominent populist actors in Croatia – to support of ideas rather than political parties. The attitude towards a political system with a strong leader not constrained by parliament was chosen as the outcome since it holds significant populist potential in contemporary democracies. Analyses showed the connection of the anti-elite, anti-systemic attitudes – as well as authoritarianism and a few right-wing political attitudes –with the strong leader preference. Both qualitative and quantitative results of this study indicated that the “breeding ground” for populism exists among the youth in Zagreb. Additional research is required to further examine that complex and previously unexplored topic.

Czy uzasadnione jest wiązanie wojny z religią?

Author(s): Konrad Szocik / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 39/2015

This article describes the issue of religious wars and conflicts. The author highlights the problem of political instrumentalization of religious systems. He focuses on the hidden causes of the political use of religions and their social and cultural importance. He points to the underestimated role of both the concept of religious tolerance developed by Paweł Włodkowic and the political project carried out by contemporary Polish authorities. The author concludes that the assimilation of the Polish concept of religious tolerance, which was an exception in Europe, could be used to avoid religious wars in the past and also today.

DAESH PROPAGANDA, BEFORE AND AFTER ITS COLLAPSE. COUNTERING VIOLENT EXTREMISM

DAESH PROPAGANDA, BEFORE AND AFTER ITS COLLAPSE. COUNTERING VIOLENT EXTREMISM

Author(s): Charlie Winter / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 2019

This report compares two archives of official Daesh media that were compiled four years apart. It explores the nuances of the group’s worldview and tracks how external and internal situational exigencies impacted them during its formative years as a caliphate. It finds that the organisation’s media infrastructure was about one tenth as productive in mid-2019 as it was in mid-2015. The data also show that it was spending more time covering the pursuits of its global network in 2019 than in 2015. Finally, the data point towards a substantial thematic rearrangement in the organisation’s overarching propaganda narrative that manifested in it shifting its story away from millenarian utopianism and towards military denialism. In sum, the data indicate that by 2019 Daesh’s propagandists were far less productive and their aggregate product was more international and less focused on civilian issues. This shift points towards a new phase in the group’s political marketing trajectory, one focused more on survival than on expansion.

DAĞILAN YUGOSLAVYA DÖNEMİ ve SONRASI KOSOVA TÜRKLERİNİN SİYASİ DURUMU

Author(s): Taner Kotle / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 8/2010

Definice, příčiny a důsledky kumulace mandátů zákonodárci

Author(s): Lukáš Hájek / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 2–3/2016

The article deals with various aspects of multiple-office holding. Although the phenomenon is especially influential in connection with legislators, the text offers a critical synthesis of recent findings on multiple-office holding on any level of political decision-making, thus providing a general framework for scholarly discussion and further research. The paper first provides a definition of the concept of multiple-office holding, which has been heretofore lacking in the Czech context. Causes of multiple-office holding are then delineated and divided into the three categories of historical reverberations, systemic elements and individual incentives. Both the positive and negative impacts on a political system are discussed as well. Next, three approaches (direct, indirect, and autoregulatory) of dealing with the practice of multiple-office holding, which are employed by particular political systems, are distinguished. Then, the role of a multiple-office holding in the Czech political system is depicted. The final part of the paper discusses a specific controversy linked to the phenomenon and criticises the lack of proper debates and scientific analyses on the practice.

DEMOCRATIC FREEDOMS EXERCISED BY NGOS

Author(s): Gabriela Nemtoi,Gabriel Ciprian UNGUREANU / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2015

Democracy is a model of government based on popular sovereignty, the participation of citizens in public affairs as responsible members of the social body. The phenomenon of political participation is an integral and complex recruitment of citizens in politics. It includes a variety of overwhelming participatory forms - from simple ones to some upper elementary characteristic of political leaders. Ultimately, political participation is presented as "output” (output function), the real effect of a particular pattern of behaviour, as a reflection and manifestation of the specific processes of political socialization, its effectiveness. An unbroken tradition of theories of democracy has given more attention to political participation of citizens, which is interpreted as a primary means to defend individual rights, the duty of citizen, as an indication of the welfare policy of the company and finally as a condition sine qua non of democracy. Institutional democratic reforms uninsured active involvement of citizens in the governance process proved to be formal and ineffective.

Author(s): Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde / Language(s): German / Issue: 04/1992

DETERMINANTS AND IMPACTS OF POLITICS OF
GODFATHERISM AND REGIONALISM IN THE YOBE STATE

DETERMINANTS AND IMPACTS OF POLITICS OF GODFATHERISM AND REGIONALISM IN THE YOBE STATE

Author(s): Mustapha Alhaji Ali,Hadiza Mali Bukar,Abdulkarim Babagana / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

The politics of godfatherism and regionalism has become a phenomenon in the political development of many nations Nigeria inclusive. The paper examined the determinants and impacts of politics of godson and regionalism in Yobe state. Indeed, the politics of godson or the elites have entered every hook and crannies of the state and have affected the political arrangement of the political system. The paper is qualitative in nature, data were generated from secondary sources where several related articles, newspapers, magazines, books were consulted etc. In explaining the topic under study, the researcher adopted Elite theory. This theory was propounded by Vilfredo Pareto in 1935, the postulation of the theory is that elites could only be replaced by another set of elites, meaning that the majority are unavoidably governed by the minority. The study found that the politics of godfatherism courses and affect the political development of Yobe state by restricting power in the hands of the few, in a specific geopolitical zone of the state. This has leads to inter-party and intra-party defections, decamping and conflicts among the party members. Therefore, the study recommends the adoption of the direct primary election in chosen candidate in all level of governance. INEC should also make a law that will discourage money politics and punish culpritinvolved in such an illegal act. To minimize the politics of Godfatherism, there is a need for political awareness campaigns on the effects of political godson on the political development of the state.

DETERMINANTS OF POLITICAL DECISIONS IN THE POLISH POLITICAL SYSTEM

DETERMINANTS OF POLITICAL DECISIONS IN THE POLISH POLITICAL SYSTEM

Author(s): Marek Górka / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2013

The changes in political life in Poland in the period 2005–2011, which restructured the existing balance of power (dominance of post-Solidarity parties at the expense of the post-communist party) force us to consider whether the party system evolution involves changes in the sphere of ideological divisions. But there also arises another question about the crisis of the left, which could mean the end of the previous model, intergroup rivalry. But there is no doubt that it occurred after 2005 events. Initiated processes took a completely different direction than those in the 90s. The purpose of the article is to explain the ongoing political disputes, and also attempt to answer the question: what factors shape the profile of program-ideological political formations in Poland.

Digitalizacija javne sfere u Srbiji: Online pritisci izvršne vlasti na ombudsmana i reakcija opoziciono opredeljene Tviter zajednice

Author(s): Jovica Pavlovic / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 03/2017

This study examines the activity of Twitter users (twitter.com) who participated in the debate regarding the quality of service provided by Serbian ombudsman Saša Janković, which (having lasted from January to May of 2015) later developed into a discussion about his personal past. The research problem is to identify and compare online discourses, strategies and techniques used by pro and anti-government participants of digital debates in a political context such as that of contemporary Serbia, in which the public sphere is still mainly shaped by traditional media even though digital discourses are influential. The aim if the study is to a) examine online communication strategies utilized by the ruling parties in their attempt to maintain hegemony over public debates; b) analyse the methods used by government opponents through which they attempt to mobilize public support online; c) compare communication strategies of the opposing sides. The purpose of this study is to provide fresh empirical findings regarding the political role of new media in weak democracies, as previous works have mostly concentrated on the political role of social media in developed democracies and authoritarian regimes. The results confirm that ’networked authoritarianism’ is successful in hindering anti-government discourses and online activity, as it polarizes the ’digital public sphere’, but the findings also indicate that anti-government strategies of ’networking’ and ’raising awareness’ play an important role for opposing the government online.

DIMENSIUNILE PRINCIPIULUI SURPRINDERII ŞI INFLUENŢA DECISIVĂ A ACESTORA ÎN CONFRUNTĂRILE ARMATE CONTEMPORANE

Author(s): Razvan-Antonio Pricope / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 9/2018

In the contemporary, there is a symbiosis between information, technology, computing and communication, which leads to the amplification of those forms and processes of action that are extremely difficult or even impossible to intuition by the enemy. Surprisingly, it contributes decisively to the outcome of military actions, determining, as the case may be, victory or defeat and, consequently, an important prerequisite for success. In the latest military conflicts, the moment of triggering the action was made public a few days or months before. Warnings given by the highest structures in the geopolitical and geostrategic context have removed the temporal nature of avoiding surprise. In strategic offensive operations, the realization of the surprise was accomplished plenary, giving its own actions maximum efficiency through all four components of the strategic surprise: technological, informational, conceptual and operational-action.
