Semiotics, image and narration. 12-th Early Fall School in Semiotics

Author(s): / Language(s): English

It is by now a tradition that the intellectual efforts of the participants at the Early Fall School in Semiotics (EFSS), organized annually by the Southeast Center for Semiotic Studies (SEECSS) at the New Bulgarian University, result in a collection of selected papers. The present volume in English and French is an outcome of the XIIth edition of the EFSS on "Semiotics, Image and Narration", held in 2006 in the town of Sozopol. It is formally divided into two parts, containing texts by 'guest lecturers' from our partner Universities in Finland, Italy and USA, as well as by 'local participants' - professors and students at the New Bulgarian University. From parchments to paper and from print to the internet, "the story of humankind has been written, and will be written upon its virtual walls" (Albertson, 1997). In the new millennium we are ever more surrounded by bulletin boards and computer networks, from advertisement banners to cyberspace. Nowadays humankind learns by watching rather than by reading or being lectured to. In order to be considered literate in the information age, the new literate person needs to be media literate as well as being proficient in literature and arithmetic.

Author(s): Sava Slavchev / Language(s): Bulgarian

"Sava Slavchev's essays are balanced, elegant and erudite, completely devoid of unnecessary categorical timelines. Here's what I wrote to the author as soon as I read his book: "This is your form, the enjoyment of freedom in the way you use it is evident. I wanted the end of the essay in the part on literature and culture to be bolder and accusing, even sinister, to gain a place in the mind of the reader. Luckily there is nothing like that! The cultural man is known in the way he protects the culture, and I am a barbarian and realized myself as such while I was reading. But this awareness does not hurt me, no - it inspires me! The Dictionary includes works of 891 composers reflecting the literary creation of 2203 writers that inspired them. Its contribution to Czech musical lexicographic literature consists in a new approach to the Czech musical production, in the worldwide context as well. In this senseit is new and unique. The Dictionary is intended for specialists, as well as for the general audience interested in music. Music theoreticians and employees of musical archives will appreciate the extensive list of specialist literature.

Edebiyat, Kültür ve Sanatta Şiddet Temsilleri Konferans Bildiriler Kitabı 2021

Author(s): / Language(s): Turkish,English

In his foreword to World Report on Violence and Health, published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002, Nelson Mandela states that “the twentieth century will be remembered as a century marked by violence”. Now we are nearly at the end of the first quarter of the twenty-first century, but violence still permeates in our lives at various levels. Various forms of violence occurring at levels of interpersonal, self-directed, collective, state, warfare, child and youth violence, intimate partner violence, environmental violence, and animal violence lay bare the complexity and pervasiveness of the phenomenon, yet it also brings along the necessity to discuss violence from multiple perspectives. Nelson Mandela Dünya Sağlık Örgütü’nün 2002 yılında yayınladığı Şiddet ve Sağlık Hakkında Dünya Raporu’nun önsözünde “yirminci yüzyılın şiddetle mimlenen bir yüzyıl olarak hatırlanacağını” söyler. Bizler, neredeyse yirmi birinci yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinin sonlarını yaşamaktayız, ancak şiddet hayatımıza hala çeşitli düzeylerde nüfuz ediyor. Kişilerarası, öze yöneltilen, kolektif, devlet, savaş, çocuk ve genç şiddeti, yakın eş şiddeti, çevresel şiddet ve hayvan şiddeti gibi çeşitli düzlemlerde vuku bulan şiddet biçimleri olgunun karmaşıklığını ve yaygınlığını açıkça ortaya koymakla beraber şiddet kavramının farklı açılardan tartışılması gerekliliğini de ortaya koymaktadır

Author(s): Mihaela Michailov,Eugen Jebeleanu / Language(s): Romanian,French

The Price of Gold is an emotional play-testimony about the coming of age of a child who grew up dreaming of becoming a sports dance champion. A child for whom the bodies of the dancers he watched represented both rigor, discipline, freedom and courage. "The Price of Gold" is a vulnerable confession in which memories from the dance hall, from trainings and camps become a subjective map of detachment from formative moments. Remembrance is a transformative act, which gives fragility the power to move forward.

Anthology of Turkish Science Fiction Stories

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Turkish science fiction dates back to the early years of the twentieth century and serious development has been seen ever since. The writers, who escaped from the darkness of the First World War and took refuge in utopian science fiction, added the excitement created by science and technology to their texts over time. Turkish writers, who followed the science fiction works from the West and made efforts for the development of this genre, produced very qualified works that could compete with their contemporaries at some points. However, due to some historical, social, and economic problems, it was not possible for these works to meet readers in the West. In this anthology, the works of Turkish science fiction writers are brought together for the first time in English. Contemporary science fiction writers have written short stories for this anthology. Hence, the resulting diversity of stories represents a contribution to science fiction literature. An important feature of the anthology is that it includes examples showing how science and technology are perceived philosophically by authors outside of Europe and America. Since literature is an indispensable resource to investigate the equivalent of science fiction, which was born with modernism, in “post-modern” societies. This anthology of Turkish science fiction will be an important Non-Western SF source for both science fiction readers and researchers.

The collection contains the papers from the academic round table “The Post-1989 Transition in Contemporary Bulgarian Literature,” held at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in November 2021.Three decades after the onset of the Transition, the articles collected here explore its dimensions in the mirror of literature. What images of the post-1989 era does literature create? How do the contemporary works interpret the recent socialist past? Does literature participate in the formation of the perceptions and the memory of the transition? The above issues are also examined in a broader interdisciplinary perspective, in relation to the media, theatre, cinema, and cultural anthropology.

Поглед към котленската хумористична народна песен

Author(s): Sofiya Ruseva / Language(s): Bulgarian

The book "Looking at Kotlen's Humorous Folk Song" is a monographic study that traces the characteristics of Kotlen's humorous folk songs - an understudied category of songs, largely spread only in Kotlensko. The song material, the object of the present study, amounts to a total of 58 songs and is the result of various sources - field materials recorded in the period 2001-2010, audio and video recordings, as well as the collections "From the source song flows /authentic Kotlen folk songs/ ", Part I (1993), "Folk Songs from Thrace" (2013) and "Bulgarians - 672 Unpublished Folk Songs from the Kosta Kolev Archive" (2018). The subject of research in the main part of the exhibition are the peculiarities of humorous chants in relation to their functional, metrorhythmic, poetic, form-forming, structural and ladomelodic specificities. The goal is an attempt to clarify the overall appearance of the chants and, if possible, to bring out common features characteristic of humorous song samples. To achieve the objectives of the study, the following research methods were used: observation, interview, description, analysis, synthesis and comparison.
