Из истории становления словацкого литературного языка: кодификация А. Бернолака и формирование нормы в текстах бернолаковцев А. Руднаи и Ф. К. Габела

This paper deals with Bernolák’s codification in comparison with the real form of Bernolák’s literary language presented in sermons of the Hungarian Cardinal A. Rudnay and translation of the religious treatise from German by Fr. X. Habel. This comparison shows that in real practice Bernolák’s language changed its character, coming nearer to norm of traditional Slovak writing. As a result typical elements, the most widespread in a West Slovak dialect or characterizing peripheral the Záhorie dialect of West Slovakia and the Czech language, forced out the elements concentrated in the Central Slovak dialect. The found out phenomena testifies that the norm essentially different from codification was formed in Bernolák‘s language.

It is the theoretical background of the linguistic image of the world that serves as a base to the author to present Slovenian and Slovak magic formulae as the archaic strata of the language. She has chosen texts of the same type from the scope of Slovenian and Slovak peasants’ way of healing. The Slovak texts were collected by the author at the end of the 20th century, while the Slovenian texts which were set down earlier are quoted from Vinko Möderndorfer’s work. Apart from the common Central European attitude, the author also points out the unique, national, and linguistic features, all reflected by the linguistic image of the world.

Słowacka proza naturyzmu w polskich przekładach — strategie wyboru i translacji w zmieniającej się perspektywie kulturowej drugiej połowy XX wieku

The author of the article analyses Polish translations of the Slovak naturalist prose which is a very interesting phenomenon at the primary horizon and appears to be the most frequently translated into Polish. The author concentrates on the representative translations, strategies for selection and strategies for translation of the naturalism in the changing cultural perspective of the second half of the twentieth century. Historical and cultural situation, historical distance between the originals and their translations has the biggest influence for the selection of the texts but also for the strategies the translators choose during the process of translation. In the perspective of cultural and literature turn in Poland in 1956, the Slovak naturalist prose had the chance to appear in the second horizon but it did not affect recipients and did not have the possibility to impact the development of the receiving literature. The author of the article tries to answer the question why it did not happen.

Current developments in German-language literature show how much literature is shaped by social changes. In the past, Germanlanguage literature has repeatedly reported on waves of emigration and refugee movements, and that's what it does today. The refugee problem is therefore also in the literature a recurring theme. Contemporary authors from the German-speaking countries such as Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Feridun Zaimoğlu, Ilija Trojanow, Catalin Dorian Florescu or Abbas Khider, who experienced migration for a variety of reasons, are proof of this current trend. The Hungarian-Swiss author Melinda Nadj Abonji with her novel Tauben fliegen auf (2010) and the Slovak-Swiss author Irena Brežná with their most recent novel Die undankbare Fremde (2012) are also part of this trend. The own experiences of escape, foreignness and integration of the two authors, who make an important contribution to intercultural literature in Switzerland, characterize their work in a particularly emphatic manner and thus also repeatedly implicate a discussion of the autobiographical background.

Spory a konflikty medzi slovenskými spisovateľmi v rokoch 1945 – 1948

The study focuses on the Slovak literary life between the years 1945 - 1948, especially on the relations and conflicts among Slovak writers and intellectuals in the short period before the communist coup. In the paper are analysed public reactions to the cleansing of Slovak cultural life in the contemporary cultural journals, whereas the author pays attention mainly on the communist writers. Although these intellectuals were members of the Communist party, many of them had different opinions on how to deal with the problem of cleansing after the second world war. The study wants to emphasize variability of opinions among the communist´s writers and the attention of the study is turned to the interior of the writer´s community, who has been traditionally quarrelled since the first Czechoslovak republic and divided by personal conflicts.

The study deals with the role of Slavic antiquities in the age of national revivals and with the forging of such antiquities. It discusses the subject of Slavic antiquities and forgeries in Central Europe, bringing in the cultural context of Western Europe as well. ‘Antiquity’ is understood to mean a kind of medium that conveyed textual or visual information. The collecting of antiquities became fashionable during the first decades of the 19th century and led to the need for antiquities to be described and categorized. In turn, antiquities served as corpuses for the shaping of modern national cultural canons. It contends that these artefacts, authentic and forged alike, played an important role in moulding the cultural canons of the Slavic nations in Central Europe. An antiquity’s canonical value stemmed from its age most of all and an antiquity needed to be linked as specifically as possible to the history and culture of a given nation. The worth of an antiquity was further boosted when it could be connected with historical personages of great significance. Finally, the more mysterious the history of an antiquity, the greater the degree of speculation permissible in regard to interpretations of it. A forged antiquity is basically an objectification informed by the forger’s thinking and imagination. A forgery bears not just marks characteristic of past times but also marks of the forger and those of the time in which the forgery was made. It is something which calls an entire system into question, thereby causing bewilderment. From this perplexity, only one phenomenon can derive benefit, namely, the national culture. Important among the motives for the forging of Slavic antiquities was the circumstance that framers of canons felt that the structures of their national cultures were incomplete. Researching the reasons for the forging, the study points out structural gaps in the canons in Central Europe as well as traumas stemming from forgeries. Using four examples taken from Kollár’s oeuvre (the Poison Tree of Java, the Slavic idols of Prillwitz, the Queen’s Court and Green Mountain manuscripts and Derzhavin’s poem God in Japanese and Chinese translation) it presents the most common motives behind Slavic forgeries along with the kinds of fake most frequently encountered; it also shows the processes by which forgeries were exposed for what they were. These examples show that when Kollár worked with antiquities and fake antiquities, playing the imposter and pecuniary advantage were very far from him. On the other hand, as a philologist he became a prisoner of contemporary national canonical and emblematic structures.

This paper is devoted to the question of Slovak–Russian and Slovak–Ukrainian literary contacts. The tradition of literary translation from Slovak into these two Slavic languages dates back to the moment of codification of the Slovak literary language in the mid-19th century. Since then, it has always been under the pressure of political circumstances. In the initial phase, it was interest to the process of national revival of Slavic peoples in the mid-19th century. The second period of high interest was during the socialist times from the 1960s to the 1980s (this period is mostly prolific for Russian translations from Slovak; on the contrary, the amount of translations into Ukrainian was scanty as Russian language was common for all Soviet nations). There was also a period of total absence of any translation activity from Slovak into Russian during the 1990s. In between these phases, literary translations from Slovak were the fact of personal initiative. The latter is the situation of the present day both in Russia and in Ukraine. That is why when listing the titles translated for the last thirty years, it is crucial to name the most prominent translators and researchers. And this fact is also the cause why the choice of the Slovak works differs greatly, with the same amount of translated titles from Slovak into Russian and Ukrainian. For the last two decades, about twenty Slovak works have been translated into both Russian and Ukrainian, but except for a novel Zóna nadšenia [Enthusiasm Zone] by J. Banaš, there is not a single work of modern Slovak literature translated into both languages. Many significant works of modern Slovak literature are not translated into neither Russian or Ukrainian (for example, there is not a single book edition of the works of P. Vilikovský, P. Pišťanek, D. Kapitáňová, etc.). The most active translators into Ukrainian are researchers and writers living on the territory of Slovak–Ukrainian border T. Likhtei, I. Yatskanin, and some others. In Russia, the most prominent translators from Slovak are Moscow researchers A. Mashkova, A. Peskova, L. Shirokova, and others. The lack of active perception of Slovak literature in foreign language space leads to the inevitable occurrence of a number of translation errors and inaccuracies. This lack also brings about the problem of translation studies and comparative studies, which in Slovakia are based on the translations from Russian into Slovak. The conclusion is made that in spite of the historical, lingual, cultural, and territorial proximity and intense literary contacts in the past, neither Russian, nor Ukrainian space is familiar with the contemporary Slovak literature today. The explanation of this fact may lie in the Slovak self-consciousness, which is much more Central European than Slavic. This observation is made on the basis of the analysis of Slovak literary works as well as previous research mentioned in the paper.

The definition of comparative literary studies in Slovakia. Historical poetics in the works of D. Ďurišin, focused on the typological essence of literary phenomena on the basis of interrelating theoretical and developmental aspects of national literature. The differences of Slovak methodology from Western positivist models of the study of interliterariness. Parallel existence of the principles of literary history and criticism in the reception analyses of Russian, German and French literatures by older Slovak scholars. The onset of realism in Slovak literature at the end of the 19th century (S. Hurban Vajanský). The important contribution of J. Felix’s critical reflection of universalist tendencies in European and esp. modern French writing. The complexity of organically incorporating these impulses into the context of Slovak literature as a result of the provincial character of a “small” nation. The wealth of translations from contemporary world literatures and its positive impact on the work of many Slovak writers in spite of the discontinuity of research in this area after 1989. Urgent need to return to similar forms of literary-cultural reflection and self-reflection through reviving an intensive philological, linguistic, theoretical-critical and historical study at our universities.

Handbook of Polish, Czech and Slovak Holocaust Fiction is a work in progress aiming at becoming a standard reference work addressed to universities and public libraries and the broader public. It includes novels, short stories, poems and plays written in Polish, Czech and Slovak within the scope of 650 standard pages. The table of contents consists of 53 articles focused on Polish, 45 articles on Czech, and 23 articles on Slovak literature. The editors provide an introduction about the main developments of Holocaust literature in the broader context of three lands: crucial topics, situations, characters, motifs and places, periodization due to political changes, reception processes in the national and transnational context. The Handbook aims primarily at the researchers and readers in Western Europe and the U.S. where the Polish, Czech and Slovak Holocaust fiction remains largely unknown. The project results from the cooperation among researchers from Polish, Czech, German and Slovak universities. This article presents two entries from Polish and Czech literature.

Ondrej Štefanko – personalitate emblematică a slovacilor din România

Ondrej Štefanko (1949-2008) cultivated poetry, prose, literary criticism, literary history, history, journalism, lexicography, ethnology etc. He led periodicals, Slovak and bilingual magazines, and he published books. He was a programmatic and systematic translator, driven by the belief that in this way a cultural bridge could be built between peoples from another point of view, which was also a way of integrating the Slovak literature into the European and world literary context. He was also appreciated as an essayist, one of his most beautiful essays being Genius loci, a kind of art to transgress one's limits, which is, in fact, one of his work's constants. In addition to literature, in the narrow sense of the word, Ondrej Štefanko cultivated other fields within the scope of various publications. He edited albums, bibliographies etc. His organizational skills were highlighted in many cultural events. He was awarded several prizes and honors, and on the 15th of June 2019 a street in Bratislava was renamed after him. With all his activity, he has undoubtedly become an emblem of the Slovaks, especially of those living in Romania.

Eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der modernen slowakischen Geschichte Ľudovít Štúr wurde am 28. Oktober 1815 geboren. Er ist nicht nur der Gestalter der slowakischen Schriftsprache, sondern auch Mitbegründer der neuzeitlichen Konzeption der slowakischen Nation basierend auf ihrer Einzigartigkeit, Selbständigkeit und Gleichberechtigkeit mit anderen europäischen Nationen. Die Regierung hat anlässlich des 200. Geburtstags dieser bekannten Persönlichkeit der slowakischen Nationalbewegung im 19. Jahrhundert 2015 zum Jahr von Ľudovít Štúr erklärt. Die Bedeutung dieses Jahrgangs unterstreicht auch seine Eintragung in die Liste der Gedenktage der Organisation der Vereinigten Nationen für Erziehung, Wissenschaft und Kultur (UNESCO). Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden unterschiedliche Fakten aus dem Leben von Ľudovít Štúr mit dem Ziel, Interesse der Slowakistik-Studierenden für ihn als wichtige Persönlichkeit der slowakischen Kultur zu wecken, vorgestellt.

Ľudovít Štúr, the most emblematic figure of the Slovak culture in the first half of the nineteenth century, embodies the spirit of the Slovak national identity. The Slovak language standard, based on the Slovak central dialect, is undoubtly associated with Ľudovít Štúr, who strongly believed in language as a mean of increasing a nation’s self-consciousness. Thanks to his studying at the University of Halle in Germany between 1838–1840, he came to know not only the latest linguistic works of the most-known linguists of his time, Franz Bopp and Wilhelm von Humboldt, but also Hegel’s and Herder’s philosophy, which led him to the so-called ”štúrovčina”, the Slovak language standard. Ľudovít Štúr may therefore be considered the father of the modern Slovak literary language.

This article seeks to explore how the cognitive literary approach was received by the Slovak academic environment in the period of time from 2007 to 2012. It also tries to map the main areas of scientific research interest within the field of cognitive studies. The year 2007 does not represent an arbitrary choice, as it relates to Bogumiła Suwara’s study published in Slovak Review. A Review of World Literature Research entitled “Cognitive literary science in a bit different way” which included a brief overview though comprehensive enough in order to reflect the way cognitive theory was received in Slovakia. The author of the present article aims at providing a general view of the way the cognitive turn was perceived in Slovakia while pointing out some of its relevant aspects by presenting various studies accompanied by brief comments.

The author makes a presentation of the Slovak comic novel based on the related bibliographies (especially the works of M.M. Bahtin, Corneliu Barborică and Peter Darovec). Novels such as René mládenca, príhody a skúsenosti (René, a Young Man, Events and Experiences) by Jozef Ignác Bajza (1783), Bendegúz (1841) by Ján Chalupka, Reštavrácia (The Restauration) by Ján Kalinčiak (1822- 1871), Faustiáda by Jonáš Záborský (1812-1876) and Večne je zelený (Forever Green) (1989) that was written much later fall into this category. Yet, the author thouroughly focuses only on Bendegúz (1841) by Ján Chalupka and Faustiáda by Jonáš Záborský. In these works laughter shapes into comic, humor, irony, satire, pamphlet, anecdote etc., which are meant to reveal the most stringent aspects of reality (national oppression, lack of national consciousness, social relations, and immorality).

Beginning with the emancipation of Slovak ethnicity from the stage of a people to the stage of a nation, which started in the seventeenth century, the two names become landmarks, and a tradition establishes itself, becoming a source for the ideas of Slovak art and literature.

Umelecký preklad ako hodnotový indikátor. K problematike Recepcie západoeurópskych literatúr na Slovensku v období národného obrodenia (1780-1850)

The paper reflects the relationships of Slovak literatures of the national revival period (1780- 1850) to the dominating West European literatures (especially German, English and French). The attitude of Slovak authors of the national revival period towards these literatures, their authors, literary movements, trends and tendencies is an indicator of the specifics of domestic literature; it talks about its priorities as well as about its ideological limitations. We can see several paradoxes in the reception of West European literatures: non-reflecting the contemporaneous development in these literatures, selective approach to authors and works determined by ideology (e.g. refusal of the West European type of Romanticism, primarily Byronism and one sided-preference of Slavonic literatures), but also extra-literary realities as well as the pressure of censorship. Besides that, it is important also to regard the long-term confessional and language rupture of Slovak literary and cultural life in the period of the national revival, which lasted up to the 40s of the 19th century and was definitely solved in the 50s. The problem of the reception of West European literatures in Slovakia represents a proof that national literature on the one hand needed to demonstrate its openness to the world, but on the other hand often fell into its own cultural closeness created by the effort to protect the specific cultural individuality and particularity. This is a traditional dilemma of Slovak culture; dilemma between its open, cosmopolitan conception and provincialism related to political concepts of extreme conservatism.

Pavel Josef Šafařík was a Slovak philologist, poet and one of the first scientists to study Slavs and their origin in Europe. He was also a literary historian and ethnographer. His main work was Slovanské starožitnosti (1837-1865, Prague) [Slavonic Antiquities], the first important research on the culture and history of the Slavs, describing their settlements, origin and languages. He is also one of the first scientists to get an interest in the language and history of the Romanians and their relations with the Slav populations thus marking the beginning of the Czech-Romanian literary and scientific relations.

Interpretačné čítanie básne (Ľubomír Feldek: mozartov koncert)

The interpretation of Feldek´s poem mozartov koncert (Mozart´ concert) from the collection Paracelsus (1973), originally a so-called translational interpretation, analyses the poem in detail. All meaningfull features – lexical, poetological, syntactical – of the poem as well as their mutual relations are taken into consideration to discover the meaning of the poem. Since the topic of the poem („legendary“ concert of W. A. Mozart in Bratislava), some toponyms and habits are very connected with the City of Bratislava, the „local meanings“ were taken into account. The interpretation results into the knowledge that mozartov koncert is the polemics of the local mythology, possibly it may be understood as a synecdoche if the polemics with wider social/political situation of the period („communism“).
