Macbeth, contemporanul nostru. Între parabola politică şi imagistica medievală

Author(s): Diana Nechit,Andrei Șerban / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2022

The aim of this article is a brief analysis of three recent performances based on Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, but also on Eugène Ionesco’s modern rewriting of the famous tragedy. Starting from aspects related to witchcraft and occult practices existing in the text of the English playwright and inspired by the medieval imaginary, we will focus on how the directors Alessandro Serra, Botond Nagy and Silviu Purcărete try to adapt the Shakespearean dramaturgical core to the demands of various contexts in their representations. We will see that, although for certain directors the anthropological and pagan dimension of Shakespeare’s play is essential, in the attempt to transform Macbeth into “our contemporary”, most of the stage creators approach the demands of political parables, deeply anchored in our everyday life. This trend responds to the initiative of the great playwrights of the 20 th century, including Heiner Müller, whose modern rewritings revealed the striking actuality of the great canonical texts.

REPREZENTĂRI ALE MALADIVULUI LA M. BLECHER ȘI THOMAS MANN

REPREZENTĂRI ALE MALADIVULUI LA M. BLECHER ȘI THOMAS MANN

Author(s): ANDREEA PILOIU / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2022

The present paper focuses on the ailments of modern man, whether we consider the physiological aspect, or whether we refer to the metaphorical, ontological dimension, and performs a comparative analysis between the work of M. Blecher and the novel The Enchanted Mountain by Thomas Mann. Illness - the overarching theme of the novels - receives numerous valences, from the most noble to the most detestable, but what remains common to these texts advanced for analysis is the existential crisis, the inner void that the characters experience acutely. The universe that both the Romanian and the German author create is permeated by the specter of death, which, without being tragically experienced, rather gives off a strange fascination, and ends up creeping into the thoughts, habits and belongings of the characters, becoming a kind of obsession that convulsively controls everyone, but which they paradoxically ignore, with just as much indifference. On a macro level, the smoldering malaise can be assimilated on the level of all mankind, as if foreshadowing the dire fate of humanity in the upcoming period.

ROSA DEL CONTE’S “ART OF TRANSLATION” BETWEEN CRITICISM AND PRACTICE

Author(s): Jessica Andreoli / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

In the synthetic essay “Le brutte infedeli ovvero Quasimodo interprete di Arghezi”,Rosa Del Conte – eminent philologist, critic and translator – openly criticised the volume of selected poems by Tudor Arghezi translated by Quasimodo (1966). In the apparently passive position of the reader, Rosa Del Conte turns the reading experience into an analysis endeavour. She takes apart the Arghezian translations and constructs a critical essay where, in the background, we can notice certain specific aspects of her manner of translation and of the deontology needed by the translator. As part of a rhetorical exercise, Rosa Del Conte explains her own perspective. The antiphrastic reasoning implicit in the use of the syntagm “belle infedeli” intentionally emphasises the negative connotation of her critique. This ironic phrase, an explicit case of antiphrasis, could then be read not only as a value judgment on the Arghezian translations made by Quasimodo, but especially as a synthetic expression of her perspective on the poetic translation. The present study, dedicated to the analysis of the world of ideas and concepts behind the expression “le brutte infedeli”, aims to reconstruct Rosa Del Conte’s translation process, as well as her idea of “fedeltà alla poesia”.

THE RECEPTION OF THE GENEVA SCHOOL OF LITERARY CRITICISM

Author(s): Mădălina Agoston / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Considering that the “official” literary studies discourse of the post-war era in Romania was shaped by Structuralism, I would emphasize the fact that Geneva School of Literary Criticism’s main theoretical directions, coming from the Francophone area, as a recursion to French language contexts, not from Paris this time (as was the case in 19th century and the first half of the 20th century), but from Geneva. The analysis of this model, thus, taken from the West to an East-European space aims to see how, in the case of concept translation – of theoretical and cultural transfer – , translation itself answers to the demands of today’s literary market: how does this transfer take place, from a source-culture to a target-culture, how can we examine it from a transnational theory perspective? The research of esthetical and political issues that the Romanian society (together with the East-European one) has faced in the 70s could be the solution itself. My paper shell therefore focus on analyzing the circulation of critical texts, both in translation and in critical debates and theoretical constructions, in periodical texts, as well as in critical volumes – and the main example for this is the Romanian translation of irony concept at Jean Starobinski.

Author(s): Cristinel Munteanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 7-12/2022

Critical spirit and tolerance are notions which do not exclude each other. As freedom without rules is not actually authentic freedom, but libertinism (leading to chaos or barbarism), so tolerance without critical thinking (or critical spirit) leads to similar regrettable results. One can also judge the other way round, starting with critical spirit and stating that sometimes, in certain circumstances, critical spirit should be doubled by tolerance. This is what I intend to prove in my article, dealing with statements belonging to Voltaire and to Coseriu.

Studiul inseratelor biblice în romanul popular „Alexandria”

Author(s): Mariana Nastasia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2022

In order to analyze the biblical quotations from Romanian medieval popular books, it is necessary to adapt the theoretical tools to the particularities of the texts. In the popular novel ”Alexandria”, more important than identifying the origin of the biblical quotations is the attestation of these biblical elements in various forms and underlining their contribution to the construction of the portrait of Alexander the Great.

Author(s): Nadejda Ivanov / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 7-12/2022

In this article we analyze the visions of literary critics about the prose of Mircea Eliade, from his memorable debut with the novel “Maitreyi”, mentioning the way in which the motives of the essay were perceived and analyzed. The Eliade’s male character can only achieve his metaphysical desire after a harmonious fusion with the feminine qualities found in the fiancée. The pairing of the two follows a ritual, most often in erotic form. So the girlfriend can have no other value than the metaphysical one. It carries in itself the function of being reborn in the primordial unity.

Author(s): Daniela Pădurean-Andreica / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2022

The woman, an eternal story, directly or indirectly, has been throughout eras a major subject, also favoured by artists, writers, historians and sociologists. The art of character creation has always been a central point in criticism, both literary and cultural, as a direct result of the rapid ascension of cultural studies, and postmodern revaluations. The study broadens and refines current researches related to feminine typology in Romanian and world literature, paving the way to the national particularities of the Transylvanian genre, in order to preserve a valuable cultural-literary identity. Although increased attention is placed on portrayals of women in Romanian literature during the interwar period, the same cannot be said about the feminine representation in literature from the end of the 19th century – beginning of 20th century, with a few recent exceptions.

Author(s): Cristian Sandache / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2022

This paper aims to analyze the use of the theme of industrialization in the communist propaganda discourse in Romania in 1945-1965. According to the communist ideological paradigm, modernization was intrinsically linked to industrialization, understood as a denial of the local economic model of development, in which agriculture played an important role. In the sense of communism, the concept of modernization has known alienating forms, and the image of the “new man” has multiplied through the numerous examples offered by proletarian literature. We will highlight, therefore, the various typologies of this character (illustrative for the positioning of the proletariat, as the axis of the communist formula), in connection with the structural-social changes of quantitative type, generated by the manifestations of the industrialization process as such, corresponding to the first stage of Romanian communization. Oscillating between utopia and concrete achievements, between the clichés of party politics and the need to overcome objective social handicaps, industrialization in communist Romania eventually came to represent a true symbol of the triumph of the new proletarian ideology. The model was found in the Soviet one, the original source of the articulation of all the discourses of the Far-East-Central-Eastern European Left. On the other hand, to reduce everything to ideology and clichés, seems to us an error, as long as capitalist Romania was an example of blatant social inequalities, against the background of an economy that had serious delays, compared to the situation of other European states. . Modernization was absolutely necessary, and industrialization was a necessary argument for a broad process in this regard. Communist ideology will apply it (but) according to its specific paradigm, and literature will become the main mirror of the reflection of this obsession. A literature of a low aesthetic level, lacking authenticity and which (with very few exceptions) is of interest today only to literary historians or researchers of the totalitarian phenomenon. A literature that represented only the equivalent of communist dogmas and that insisted on the concept of "New Man", which they considered a symbol of the world that the communists were to build. However, this symbol was in reality the equivalent of the deepest antihumanism.

Author(s): Lia Botnari / Language(s): Romanian Issue: XV/2022

Author(s): Béatrice Nicoriuc / Language(s): German Issue: 15/2022

Herta Müller’s characters are always located on the border between the Romanian and the German language and culture. The identity of the protagonists is also formed at the verge of this border. Müller uses many words and phrases from the Romanian language in her metaphors, translates them into German and incorporates them into her poetic language. The paper discusses Lola’s character from the novel Herztier. The analysis deals with the linguistic and cultural imprint of Lola’s character, as well as with the problem of the perpetrator-victim dichotomy, an aspect that determines all of Müller’s female characters. Lola is not an agent but a borderline figure in the novel. Her figure is located on the border between the rural and urban space, between Romanian and German language and culture, and between being a victim and being an accomplice.
