The manuscris adopts a three-fold aim. First it is concerned with the analysis of the decades covering the turning-point in the history of reception, namely the spaces of publicity in the years 1780–1790, the synchronic analysis of the Dugonics edition, of the pervious, parallel editorial plans of the texts and of the literary correspondences – by all these attempting to draw a sketch of the double viewpoint on literature of Gedeon Ráday and to link the turning point of the Gyöngyösi receptionto the person of Gedeon Ráday.Second, based on the micro-textual analysis of the editorial plan we have managed to disentangle the conflicting views of the literature on Gyöngyösi and Kovásznai.Third, by transcribing and presenting the study by Sándor Kovásznai we have presented and explored a source offering further varied possibilities of approach to the researchers of the history of reception related to Gyöngyösi texts, as the viewpoints chosen by the author of the study for interpretation are in line with the expectations of the international critical literature and it calls attention to a series of possibilities for interpretation that are still valid and pertinent.

Jókai Mórról másképpen

Having received a fresh impetus in the past decade, research on Jókai has opened a new chapter in the history of the novel of Hungarian Romanticism, especially in that of Jókai interpretations. Jókai perceived as the storyteller of the Hungarian big prose has been replaced by an author of modern thinking who would regularly try his hand at new possibilities offered by prose epic; an author who was simultaneously the popular writer of national literature and a writer reacting to European novelist attempts in his own way; an author whose place in world literature is only now beginning to take shape. This collection of studies explores the somewhat neglected areas of the Jókai scholarship. The analyses strive to show how a couple of Jókai works establish the kind of prose that speaks the same language as other European literatures, and at the same time, how they break the ground for a more complex and more “modern” novel that converses with our present. This volume, while touching upon some Jókai works that have been not been discussed so far, sketches the portrait of a writer who, in the cover of his novels, loves to experiment and is open to what the world has to offer.

Der Held des Romans ist eine aus unsicheren Quellen hervorgegrabene, schriftstellerisch trefflich bearbeitete satanische Figur: László Listius. Dieser vom Teufel besessene Giftmischer, unbarmherzige Mörder und unzüchtige Päderast hat möglicherweise bei den Jesuiten gelernt und auch Gedichte geschrieben. Seine Intelligenz stellt er aber in den Dienst seiner unbändigen Leidenschaften. Mit teuflischem Erfindungsreichtum hält er den Palatin in Schrecken, und durch die Alchimie gerät er auch in Kontakt zum Kaiser selbst. Gleichzeitig terrorisiert er auf sadistische Weise seine Umgebung und entschlüpft immer wieder den Fängen des Gesetzes. Die mitreissende Erzählung enthält entsprechend der Intention des Autors eine wichtige Erkenntnis: In der Gesellschaft sind fast immer unerklärliche dunkle Kräfte verborgen, die, wenn sie an die Oberfläche dringen, nur um den Preis schwerer Opfer zu bezwingen sind.“Károly Szalay has dug himself so deep in the 17th century that it clearly deserves admiration: for instance, he publishes two letters in the novel which we read in the total belief that they are contemporary documents. However, in actual fact, they were both written by Szalay! Od idylli do ironii. Literatura węgierska wobec Zagłady w latach 1944-1948

This is the first monograph in Polish devoted to Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust literature from the years 1944-1948. The theoretical part of the publication presents the situation of this literature in its heyday, models of Jewish biographies in Hungary, the evolution of texts focusing on the Jewish question, and the metaphor of being a Jew in the Danube lands in interwar essays and prose. The interpretation section presents selected literary works by authors such as Terez Rudnóy, Miklós Radnóti, Erno Szep, Istvan Órkeny, and Istvan Vas, as well as ghetto literature. The texts subjected to meticulous analysis represent the successive experiences of writers of Jewish origin: forced labour in Serbia and on the Eastern Front, concentration camps, large ghettos, international ghettos, internment camps. The interpretation part uses contemporary research methodology (e.g. gender and ecocritical reading). What is also of significance is the fact that the author of this book is Polish, has authored another important and widely commented work, Świadomość zwrócona przeciwko sobie samej. Imre Kertesz wobec Zagłady (Consciousness Turned Against Itself. Imre Kertész Versus the Holocaust), is a Polish scholar, translator from Hungarian (including Kertesz's prose), essayist and poet. All her competences intertwine tightly in her latest work and become the basis of a book that will attract the non-professional reader and be of outstanding scientific value.

PANTEONIZÁCIÓ ÉS VIZUÁLIS REPREZENTÁCIÓ

My lecture dedicated to Endre Ady's so called "kurucos" poems, tries to determine a formula of the connection between poetical events and those of a cult. The latter is not unknown for the contemporary reader who hasn't heard about Kálmán Thaly's not exactly legitim procedure. How he tried to raise the level of our not too worthy kuruc poetry by help of his own, that is false "kuruc" poems? As a conclusion I quote a poem by Ady written under the influence of Thaly.

AZ ADY-KULTUSZ HATÁSA AZ INDULÓ ERDÉLYI MAGYAR IRODALOM IDENTITÁSTUDATÁRA

Endre Ady is connected to Transylvania by his birthplace, his school years (Carei, Zalău), the beginning of his career as a journalist in Oradea. Following the First World War, the Hungarian literature of Transylvania looked on his recently ended work as a model. The Hungarian literature of Transylvania in this epoch is more tolerant and progressive than the one of Hungary. Ady's cult manifested itself in pamphlets and monographs, as well as in memorial houses. In literary life it fostered the prophet role inherited from romanticism.

AZ ERDÉLYI KÖLTŐ ─ A REMÉNYIK-KULTUSZ FELÍVELÉSE ÉS MEGTÖRÉSE

Sándor Reményik's poetry was subject of cult already in his lifetime and got to be rapidly canonized. His cult revived following the poet's sudden death in 1941. Babits's early study emphasized the ethical, collective values of his work. However, these values are not of aesthetical nature. After 1947 the poet was rejected vehemently by the so-called class-conscious internationalism. His works were republished after 1980 by religious publishers, and found his way back to general acceptance in the nineties. Nevertheless, his entire oeuvre hasn't been published so far.

KORABELI ROMÁN KRITIKA A SZÉKELYFÖLD LEÍRÁSÁRÓL

In 1874, the Romanian periodical Transilvania published two articles that criticized the last volume of Orbán Balázs’s A Székelyföld leírása (Description of Szeklerland) that had just been published. The first part of the present paper expounds on the reception of the volume in Hungarian papers and journals of the period. The second part aims to present the arguments through which the author of the articles (probably George Bariţiu) refutes the parts of Orbán Balázs’s monography that present Romanians in negative terms. The quotations from Orbán’s work provide an insight into the image of Romanians among Hungarians, while the ones taken from the articles show the way Romanians regard Hungarians and themselves. The extracts quoted also reflect on the ethnic relations that had an impact on everyday life between the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and World War I.
