Third time lucky: An analysis of Paris’ bids for the Olympic Games in 2008, 2012 and 2024

Third time lucky: An analysis of Paris’ bids for the Olympic Games in 2008, 2012 and 2024

Author(s): Julia Jastrząbek / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Hosting the Olympic Games has become a unique occasion to implement several projects aimed at upgrading public infrastructure and improving the economic performance of the host city. Thus, some cities are so determined to host the Olympics that they decide to bid multiple times. One of the examples of such a city is Paris, which since the 2000s has submitted its bids three times, for 2008, 2012, and 2024, of which the last attempt turned out to be successful. Based on the above, the main aim of this article is to present the trajectory of changes and developments made by the three successive bid attempts, with an emphasis on the latest successful campaign. This study demonstrates that there are some recurrent ideas, projects, and plans shared by each bid with some modifications to emphasize their uniqueness, novelty, and up-to-date approach. In some aspects, the Paris 2024 bid builds on its previous candidature from 2012 in the field of long-term legacy effects and sustainability. Therefore, there is a consistent action taken by the bid managers and city authorities in terms of using the Olympic Games as a tool for urban regeneration and sports development.

„Dziewczynki mogą wszystko” – o zwalczaniu stereotypu płci na przykładzie strategii marketingowej marki Lego

Author(s): Justyna Majchrowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 13/2022

The aim of the study was to try to observe ways of conducting a marketing strategy in which stereotypes are broken. The pilot study carried out using the method of genological text analysis, with a particular focus on the structural and linguistic aspect, made it possible to notice the multi-channel communication of the addresser, the Lego Group, with recipients – consumers from all over the world, including Poland. Through its narrative strategy, the company draws attention to the existing, quite harmful, social attitudes to raising girls (and similarly boys). This Justyna Majchrowska 122 dual division, started already in infancy, which is being copied today, e.g. in publicly available advertisements, it is one of the reasons for the formation of the gender boundary. Respect for such a pattern by society leads both groups (women and men) to shortages in skills and competences, introduces demarcation and prejudices that – over time – can lead to harmful behavior of one sex towards the other or within each of them. The results of the study show what the brand campaign (here Lego), and ultimately the public, can achieve by promoting certain values, including by removing stereotypes (language stereotypes) so deeply rooted in language and culture (not only Polish). The strategy of a specific campaign, thanks to the use of content marketing, also allows for a positive brand image (here Lego) and attracting new consumers. Breaking stereotypes used in brand strategy can thus be a persuasive technique to attract the attention of customers/potential new customers.

Изследване на същността на счетоводните дейности в контекста на защитата на лични данни

Author(s): Milena Mitkova,Daniela Georgieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 14/2022

Technological progress caused new challenges to the protection of personal data and the privacy of individuals. Those challenges are mostly related to risks of possible harm to individuals such as financial abuse, fraud, problems in exercising rights, and others. The specificity of the accounting activity requires accounting companies to handle a large set of personal data, the protection of which is among the national and European priorities. However, the non-systematic fulfillment of the obligation to protect personal data can lead to some unethical actions by those companies. A clear definition of the types of data that are collected by groups of persons can have a proactive effect on the prevention of incorrect collection and analysis of personal information. The purpose of the paper is to outline the main activities and relationships that accounting companies have with internal (staff) and external (customers) persons for the purposes of collecting, analyzing, and storing personal data. The used research methods are the logical, deductive, and comparative methods, as well as the methods of analysis and synthesis.

Author(s): Zuzanna Zaporowska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The first part of the article addresses the historical background to, and the practical perspective of, current considerations concerning the future by highlighting the potential changes that will be brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The text attempts to define and expand upon selected economic and social consequences of the pandemic, including the various related arguments, considerations and histories, in connection particularly with the analysis and reflections that emerged immediately following the outbreak of the pandemic. Particular attention is devoted to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the demographic situation, the educational sphere and the labour market. The unfolding crisis has already exerted a lasting structural impact on the global economy with, primarily, short-term financial and economic consequences. The various economic and social consequences for Poland are the same as in other countries. The most significant difference currently concerns differences in terms of regulations following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wellbeing economy − ekonomika dobrého života

Author(s): Jiří Silný / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2023

The well-being economy is a broad concept that has been developed by non-governmental organisations as well as certain governments and international organisations such as the OECD. The text attempts to delineate the boundaries of this concept as it is discussed in various settings, and to evaluate the potential benefits of the concept. As a response to various crisis phenomena associated with neoliberal economic practices that focus on growth and profit maximisation, the economics of wellbeing proposes the democratic setting of economic objectives so as to ensure social and ecological sustainability. Such a change in thinking and economic practice is already underway in many places, and the question remains open as to how intensely and widely it will eventually manifest itself.

How to Implement Knowledge Management in Emerging Governments in Africa and Beyond: A Case Study on the South African Government

Author(s): Lance Barbier,Robertson Khan Tengeh / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This paper is based on the premise that public officials in developing countries lack the necessary skills to implement Knowledge Management (KM) successfully, so a framework is required to facilitate this process. South Africa is the case study. It is therefore necessary to develop a Knowledge Management Implementation Framework (KMIF). Consequently, one of the objectives of this paper is to validate this need and then outline a KMIF that can help government departments in developing countries implement KM and foster a KM culture. A mixed methodology approach was used, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection. Based on the Taro Yamane formula, 139 people were selected from a target population of 221 officials involved in KM in the South African government. DATAtab, a web-based statistics application, was used to analyze the responses. A comprehensive review of several secondary literature sources was carried out. For the literature review, relevant peer-reviewed articles were downloaded from Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Scopus, and Phil Papers. The study posits that officials charged with KM implementation in the South African government lack the necessary implementation skillset, that a need for a KMIF exists, and subsequently outlines a three-stage KMIF to facilitate their efforts. This study recommends that the proposed three-stage KMIF be adopted since it will provide the government (i) a simplified and structured way of realizing KM; (ii) it will be an effective tool that officials can use to guide them on how to implement KM, and (iii) it will cultivate a KM culture within the government. Even though the study is original to the South African government, the findings, however, may be applied to other emerging governments in Africa and beyond. Despite its theoretical nature, the paper lacks empirical validation, leaving it open to further investigation.

Methods of Combating Offenses in the Field of Ecology

Author(s): Rostyslav Shchokin,Vasyl Oliinyk,Oleksandr AMELIN,Yevhen Bondarenko,Vitaliy Maziychuk,Dmytro Kyslenko / Language(s): English Issue: 1(65)/2023

Environmental crime is dangerous in terms of the scale of the implications and the impact area. The resonance and specifics of environmental crimes require a special approach to the prevention and investigation of these crimes. The aim of the article was to systematize measures to prevent (counteract to) environmental crimes. The aim involved the following methods: statistical analysis, correlation analysis, generalization and analogy, hypothetico-deductive model and system-structural approach. Fundamental measures to prevent (counteract to) environmental crimes are defined. The countries with the largest and smallest number of environmental crimes were identified, including China, India, Vietnam, Belgium, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany. The relationship between the number of environmental crimes for 2015 to 2019 and the environmental tax relative to GDP for the period, as well as the number of environmental crimes for 2015 to 2019 and environmental protection expenditures was determined. Measures aimed at the prevention (counteraction) of environmental crimes are systematized, which consist of three interrelated levels: national, international cooperation and cooperation with the public, public organizations. The prospect of further research is to determine the organizational aspects of criminal law counteraction to cross-border environmental crime.

Environmental and Socio-Economic Development Strategy of Depressed Regions. Case of Kazakhstan

Author(s): Dana Akisheva,Kanat Adilbayev,Zhibek Abylkassimova,Aigul Adilbayeva,Zauresh Nurgalieva / Language(s): English Issue: 1(65)/2023

Strategic priorities for the development of regions are one of the elements of the economic policy of Kazakhstan. The appearance of depressed regions is often associated with an incorrect choice of a system of economic development priorities. In this research work, the authors present the factors of depressiveness of the regions due to the decrease in the competitiveness of the main industrial products, the reduction in the level of investment demand, the depletion of the mineral resource base or the implementation of structural changes in the economy, etc. A stable socio-economic economy of the region requires increasing the efficiency of resource use, encouraging the development of innovations, introducing regional mechanisms and tools for the sustainable development of territorial subjects. It is necessary to develop conceptual approaches to increase the interest of the subjects of the regions in the implementation of environmentally significant measures of the system, based on the stimulation of innovation. Measures are needed to solve the key problems of choosing the most effective incentive measures for a particular region, in conjunction with its features of socio-economic development, natural and climatic conditions, the state of the environment, etc.

Sustainable Development of Rural Areas in the Conditions of Globalization: Ukrainian Realities

Author(s): Tetiana Lisova,Svitlana Sharapova,Viktoriya Bredikhina,Liudmyla Leiba / Language(s): English Issue: 1(65)/2023

Ukrainian agriculture remains one of the most problematic sectors of the national economy, and revolutionary processes in rural areas are today in the center of attention of national scientists, politicians, and public representatives. The article carries out a scientific study related to the search for the fundamental reasons for the low effectiveness of reform decisions and actions implemented in Ukraine with the aim of bringing the level of development of Ukrainian rural areas closer to the EU standards. Such research can become the basis for forecasting trends in the development of rural areas of Ukraine in the medium and long term. It can also serve as a reliable basis for applied mechanisms of reforming the agro-industrial complex in the post-war period and the evolution of rural areas of Ukraine in the context of European integration. It is noted that from the point of view of European integration, there is a natural, labor, technical, technological, scientific and information potential for the development of rural areas of Ukraine. At the same time, there is a need to find alternative approaches to the development of rural areas of Ukraine, in particular, focusing on those principles that ensure effective development of rural areas of EU member states. Improving the economic security of the country and transitioning to a higher level of socio-economic development is impossible without the creation of a comprehensive, scientifically based strategy for the development of rural areas on the basis of sustainability.

Climate Change Impacts and Environmental and Water use Behaviors, Beliefs and Perceptions

Author(s): Ismail Banoo,Nirmala Dorasamy,Faizal Bux / Language(s): English Issue: 1(65)/2023

This paper presents research conducted on urban home water use behavior as a response demand mitigation strategy to reduce domestic water consumption in SA. The paper presents results of urban home residents’ attitudes, behavior and perceptions towards their water consumption in a search for ways in which domestic demand for water may be substantially reduced. The analysis reflects the water use behavior and perceptions of urban dwellers in a period where water use rationing and restrictions are in place in parts of SA, therefore water scarcity is an important public crisis issue. The research has brought to the fore the complexity of the forces shaping water demand and use in the context of the socio-demographic composition of homes residing in different types of dwellings, as well as the cultural, behavioral and attitudinal aspects of water consumption in city of Durban. The essential questions driving the research was what extent the two key dimensions of urban structure do, i.e. built form and the socio-behavioral characteristics of home water use, influence the pattern of water consumption. Additionally, the study ascertained the extent to which urban water users understood water-saving practices and the need to conserve this precious natural resource whilst also investigating the extent that the public believed were the most effective water-saving habits, interventions and communication methods to support reduced water consumption at a home level. In so doing, the study findings have aimed to inform public policy on ways to reduce consumption and identify alternative and complimentary ways to address the urban water conservation and demand management planning.

Developing Nature Interpretation and Alternative Management Strategies to Promote Pro-Environmental Behaviors among Visitors to Thailand's National Parks

Author(s): Pitoon Amornwitthawat,Noppawan Tanakanjana Phongkhieo,Thawan Nieamsup / Language(s): English Issue: 1(65)/2023

The purpose of this study was to recommend nature interpretation and alternative management strategies to enhance pro-environmental behaviors among visitors by studying the factors that influence these behaviors. The samples were 1400 Thai visitors and 20 national park officers. Questionnaire data was analyzed using path analysis and content analysis. Taking into account research findings, the 11 of interpretive messages were created to promote the behaviors in national parks across the country. The message that is deemed most appropriate for encouraging visitor behaviors was: "A national park is a treasure for everyone, and it is important that we all do our part to protect it. If you see any activities that have the potential to destroy natural resources or harm the environment, please inform the park officers immediately." Besides, developing effective nature interpretation and preparing public facilities have been recommended as major alternative management strategies. The most appropriate high-level strategy for developing effective nature interpretation was found to be "utilizing new technologies to support nature interpretation." The survey respondents identified "setting up different colored garbage bins" and "installing fences to preserve fragile areas" as the most effective strategies for preparing public facilities and managing visitor behaviors in Thailand's national parks.

Tennis Tournaments from the Perspective of Sport Tourism

Author(s): Alexandru-Nicolae Banciu,Claudiu Ionuț Popîrlan,Germina Cosma / Language(s): English Issue: 2(66)/2023

Tourism development over the last years led to an increase in the number of sport events attendees and, on the other hand, the sport events expansion generated the growth of sport related tourism. Sport tourism is a meaningful branch of overall tourism referring to the individuals participating in sport events both actively and passively. Referring to tennis tournaments, there has been a constant increase in media publicity, advertising space for the sponsors and the number of spectators. Thus, tennis, as a sport and a touristic product, has a significant contribution in attracting tourists and in regional development. Long-term development strategies should consider the socioeconomic traits of tennis related tourism.

A Study on the Causality Relationship between Total Capital Increase, Foreign Investments, and Tourism Sector Revenues in Azerbaijan

Author(s): Nigar Huseynli / Language(s): English Issue: 2(66)/2023

The causation link between foreign investments in Azerbaijan, the country's overall capital expansion, and the growth of the tourist industry is examined in this paper. The Granger technique was used to ascertain the causal connection. The World Bank provided the data set needed for the analytical step. The findings of the research conducted to ascertain the connection between total capital rises, foreign investments, and tourist revenues in Azerbaijan demonstrate that there is some causation. The study's findings indicate that in Azerbaijan, economic development and tourist revenue are related. In other words, as the economy develops, the tourist industry in this nation expands and generates more revenue. In addition, it is evident that the growth of the tourist industry in this nation is successful in luring foreign capital to this nation. The growth of the tourist industry has a direct impact on the rise in total capital rises, just as it does on luring foreign investment into the nation. In other words, the growth of the tourist industry is the primary driver of both domestic and international investments. It is acknowledged that causation exists in each of the three situations.

Education Strategies for the Development of Ecotourism in Maramures

Author(s): Otilia Crăciun (Radu) / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

After the Covid-19 pandemic, a lot has changed. People have become more responsible for the environment, but the hunger to visit, see places, to know traditions has increased. Ecotourism, the only type of sustainable tourism, is still growing and its development requires a major investment in educating the staff involved, tourists, schoolchildren and teachers for all disciplines, of at all levels of education. It is known that the first educators of a child are the parents, so the first people we must attract to the learning process are the parents, then children, teachers, colleagues at work. Romania has areas that lend themselves to ecotourism such as the Apuseni Mountains, Maramureş, Bucovina, the Danube Delta, but the level of knowledge of the principles of ecotourism by those who can offer these services and by tourists based on observations made between June 2020 and June 2022, is quite low. In this article we present using the observation method, the results obtained during the years, studying the behavior of tourists and employees from Maramureş, taking into account the principles of ecotourism and establishing a strategy to attract the population (employees and tourists) to ecotourism, a strategy based on education.
