Author(s): Dimitar Vesselinov,Milena Yordanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2019

The article discusses the problem of comparative compatibility in Bulgarian, French and Turkish languages. The first two languages are Indo-European but from different groups (the Slavic and the Romance groups respectively), and the third is a non-Indo-European, representative of the Turkic language family. The objective of this study are the cognitive and pragmatic chains for expressing the impossibility of boarding a certain vehicle due to its delayed arrival at the place of departure, which are characteristic of the linguistic pictures of the three languages in question. The purpose of the study is to identify the elements used for building these cognitive and pragmatic chains in Bulgarian, French and Turkish languages by comparing them and exploring their potential for combinations in the languages mentioned. Samples of everyday speech acts from the three languages have been presented, described, juxtaposed, compared and analyzed from a morphosyntactic, lexical and pragmatic perspective. A combination of the comparative method and matrix modelling is used for processing the linguistic material and the results are presented in a tabular form. The conclusion not only reveals some linguistic differences, but suggests that they are due to the cultures of the three countries and their transport systems. A suggestion for further implementation of the results of the study is made, namely, elaborating bilingual and/or multilingual dictionaries.

REPRESENTATION OF THE SPACE CATEGORY IN THE ENGLISH TERMINOLOGY OF BIOTECHNOLOGУ

REPRESENTATION OF THE SPACE CATEGORY IN THE ENGLISH TERMINOLOGY OF BIOTECHNOLOGУ

Author(s): Elena Syrotina / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

This paper deals with the study of the modern English language terminology of biotechnology within the framework of the cognitive paradigm. The study of biotechnological terminology from the standpoint of cognitive linguistics is associated with the study of the role of epistemological categories and their linguistic expression in the studied terminology. It has been established that certain categories play an important role both in the birth of a scientific concept and in the formation of a name reflecting it. The author aims to reveal the functional features of the category of space in the language of biotechnology and to identify a set of tools in the English language that serve to express this category. The epistemological category of space is widely represented in biotechnological terminology, since it has pragmatic significance, which is explained by the need to accurately indicate the specific shape, size, location and movement of objects used by humans for manipulation. Thus, from the point of view of the cognitive approach, one of the bases for the classification of concepts in biotechnological terminology is the category of space. The concepts of space (PLACE, CONTENT, FORM, MOVEMENT) have paramount importance in the formation of biotechnology concepts. Linguistic means of representation of these space concepts are widely represented in the biotechnological terminology of the English language. They are special morphemes, special spatial vocabulary, syntactic constructions, which have space information.

Author(s): Andreana Eftimova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

The article examines the influence of the parameters of expert speech on the trustworthiness, authority and clarity of information in the media. The following parameters of the expert speech, based on research on the specifics of the professional and media register (Halliday 1989, Videnov 2012 and others), in the media texts were observed: presence, adequacy and naming of the sources - expert and informational; presence of professional vocabulary and terminology; complicating the syntactic organization of utterances; presence of international vocabulary and foreign words and expressions; presence of evaluative and expressive vocabulary (metaphors, etc.); use of modal and conditional constructions to distinguish factual from non-factual information; correlation of indicative and retelling forms. A survey was conducted to establish the influence of linguistic facts on the assessment of expert speech in media reports. A survey was conducted on sentences from 14 informational articles selected using the keywords "coronavirus experts". The questionnaire contained 12 multiple-choice questions, grouped into three sections according to the criteria to be measured: trustworthiness (6 questions), clarity (3 questions) and authority (3 questions). The comments establish a different influence of the same language parameters on the sense of trustworthiness, authority and clarity of the content. Their reading depends on the experience, skills and attitudes of the audience to understand the media text.

Anglicismos en el español contemporáneo – un análisis etimológico

Anglicismos en el español contemporáneo – un análisis etimológico

Author(s): Anda Lucia Ciltan / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 2/2021

This paper focuses on current anglicisms in Spanish, but offers also a short theoretical view on the contact between Spanish and English and also between Spanish and German, Arabic, French and Italian, following Dworkin’s perspective (2012), who wrote a complex history of the Spanish vocabulary. The analysis part of the paper represents an etymological analysis on five terms coming from English, which involved searches in different corpuses and dictionaries, like the Historical Dictionary Corpus (HDC) and the Dictionary of the Spanish Language by Real Academia Espanola. The anglicisms are relatively new lexical entries in Spanish, and their use was accentuated at the beginning of the 21st century, for example: bloguero, chat/chatear, e-mail, beisbol, sueter.

Разлики между достоверността на информацията, изразявана чрез четирите евиденциала в съвременния български език, според оценките на анкетирани българи

Author(s): Krasimira Aleksova,Mihaela Moskova,Danka Apostolova,Yana Sivilova,Laska Laskova,Patrik Mihaylov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2024

This study analyzes the differences between the indicative, inferential, renarrative and dubitative forms in contemporary Bulgarian based on their perceived degree of reliability, as evaluated through a survey conducted with 950 Bulgarian native speakers. The primary objective is to investigate how they perceive distinctions in reliability across six experimental scenarios that combine forms of all four evidentials. The results are used to examine the degrees of reliability in each pair of evidentials. Additionally, the study revisits the discussion on whether subordinate relationship exists between the features of subjectivity and renarrativity (reportedness) which form the oppositions between the four evidentials in contemporary Bulgarian.

Popularizační dialog českých bohemistů s jejich čtenáři v průběhu tří čtvrtin století

Popularizační dialog českých bohemistů s jejich čtenáři v průběhu tří čtvrtin století

Author(s): Jana Hoffmannová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 4-5/2024

The article builds on existing definitions of the popularizing style and investigates how the main features of this style are realized in short texts popularizing Czech linguistics and linguistic findings about Czech. The paper is based on texts by Czech linguists throughout the last 75 years: 23 books published since 1948 and 330 contemporary texts published by the scholars of the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in various newspapers and magazines. It focuses on genre characteristics of these texts, most often referred to as “jazykové koutky” (literally “language corners”), but also as columns, glosses, feuilletons, reflections or essays – i.e., genres that are similar in their hybrid nature and informal expression. The stylistic analysis focuses on the dialogical nature of these texts, on the contact between the author and the reader, as projected into the texts. The results of a comparison between older popularization texts (roughly from the second half of the 20th century) and the most recent texts, from 2019–2024, are also presented: in the most recent texts, subjectivization, individualization, emphasized contact, and bringing authors closer to their intended readers come to the forefront significantly, while at same time the entertainment value, playfulness, and wittiness increase.

Krátké žánry (drobnosti, sloupky, koutky, „rady“) v bulharské jazykovědné popularizační tradici

Author(s): Milen Tomov / Language(s): Czech Issue: 4-5/2024

The article examines collections of various short language genres published in Bulgaria from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. A chronological and typological classification of the collections is presented, and a formal and general content characterization is made of this type of published series in the Bulgarian linguistic literature. The dynamics is traced of the compilation and publication of collections, and it is found that collective volumes have been decreasing over time and currently only collections by individual authors continue to be published, while at the same time their publication is shifting towards the Internet. From the review of the published collections it can be concluded that the linguist with the greatest presence and influence as an author of short language genres and with published book collections of advice on language is currently Prof. Vladko Murdarov, who is a scholar of the older generation. The article provides material enabling comparative research in the field of language cultivation and linguistic popularization.

Формообразувателните варианти в парадигмата на българския глагол

Author(s): Krasimira Aleksova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: Special/2025

This article examines the variation in the grammatical forms within the verb paradigm of the indicative, conclusive, renarrative and dubitative in present-day Bulgarian. The analysis is focused solely on the indicative mood. Three types of grammatical form variation are identified: a) coexistence of codified forms alongside rare and problematic variants with limited functional potential, remnants of earlier developmental stages of the respective forms; b) coexistence of multiple codified forms within the standard language norm; and c) coexistence of forms indicating an incomplete grammaticalization process, where some of the variants are not recognised by codifiers, including relatively “new” forms, which, according to some authors, have likely emerged after the establishment of codified forms. Special attention is given to grammatical variants that demonstrate a tendency toward the condensation of (periphrastic) composite verb forms, consisting of multiple micro-elements, or a trend toward the unification of formation patterns within certain micro-paradigms.

NAMES OF (DEMI)GODDESSES AND (DEMI)GODS IN THE IDIOMS WE LIVE BY

NAMES OF (DEMI)GODDESSES AND (DEMI)GODS IN THE IDIOMS WE LIVE BY

Author(s): Floriana Popescu / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The attitudes regarding the use of and the reference to names of (demi)goddesses and (demi)gods represent a matter of style, social convention(s) and personal choice. Over the centuries they have named cities, towns and burghs, beloved persons (sons and daughters), and popular festivals. Personal names in world mythologies have also been preserved in the public eye by means of diverse idiomatic structures also known as fixed expressions. This paper will describe the idiomatic patterns which are built around names of deities which are now part of both the English and Romanian lexicons. Although English and Romanian are two distant cultures, separated by almost a whole continent as well as the British Channel, many of the Greek and Roman fixed expressions which include mythonyms have now become part of their lexical heritages. This corpus-based research proves that even if two cultures, which are very distant both geographically and culturally, may as well be equally available to naturalizing a huge wealth of individual words and fixed expressions. As this paper will prove, such naturalizations are either fully or partially shared by the two hosting cultures or they may be language specific.

BINDING AND RECIPROCITY IN ROMANIAN LANGUAGE

BINDING AND RECIPROCITY IN ROMANIAN LANGUAGE

Author(s): Ana-Maria Popa / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

The purpose of this article is twofold: (a) to provide a detailed analysis of reciprocal constructions from the perspective of the theory of anaphoric dependencies in contemporary Romanian language and (b) to examine the implications of these analyzes for the refinement of this typology. All languages have several strategies at their disposal to express reciprocity, which can often be combined, but can also contrast and differ in their interpretation. Combinations of quantifiers, another important source for the development of reciprocal markers, show considerable variation across languages. Our typological approach offers some new insights into the analysis of reciprocal constructions in contemporary Romanian language.

Към въпроса за инвариантното значение на преизказните глаголни форми в обучението по български език в средното училище

Author(s): Vasil Stamenov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2025

The main purpose of the study is to check whether the invariant meaning of the renarrative verb forms is represented in the same way in the contemporary Bulgarian language textbooks, used in secondary schools. The paper thoroughly analyses the lesson materials focused on the subject of renarration in the 7th grade Bulgarian language textbooks. The observations, which have been made, indicate that some author panels assume that the non-evidential uses of the renarrative are its primary meaning. In some cases the renarrative grammar forms are included in the lessons discussing grammatical mood, without any account for the fact that the ranarrative expresses the speaker’s attitude towards the utterance, not towards the action. The study comments on the main causes for the differences in the examined textbooks and more specifically on the diversity of standpoints regarding the semantics and the categorial status of the renarrative verb forms, as well as the observed overlooks in the curriculum, etc. Some suggestions have also been made, which aim to assist the development of equal criteria, which can be used as a foundation for teaching renarraive verbs forms in secondary schools.
