Demetaforizzare nel processo traduttivo : alcuni problemi linguistici scelti

Demetaforizzare nel processo traduttivo : alcuni problemi linguistici scelti

Author(s): Edyta Bocian / Language(s): Italian Issue: 34/2022

The article aims to analyze the demetaphorization process in translation in the context of contemporary Italian literature. The problem is framed from the point of view of the focal adjustments of R. Langacker, in particular the selection and the figure-background alignment. Apart from the obvious problems of untranslatability, the role of the metaphorical potential played in the demetaphorization process is analyzed.

Il ne faut pas se laisser tromper par la langue : entre syntaxe et sémantique

Il ne faut pas se laisser tromper par la langue : entre syntaxe et sémantique

Author(s): Beata Śmigielska / Language(s): French Issue: 34/2022

In this article, Beata Śmigielska describes the questions used to determine the number and nature of arguments of predicates within the framework of Stanisław Karolak’s semantics-based grammar. Since syntactic structures do not directly reflect the semantic structures of predicates, the distinction between arguments and adjunct elements (modifiers) often becomes problematic. This fact is related to the lack of a single methodology by which this can be done in a simple and unambiguous way, resulting in different results of analyses of the same predicates. To solve this problem, it is necessary clearly to define the theory within which we work, because it is the adopted perspective and its well-defined principles that will decide both the path of thought during the research and its results. In her analyses of the selected predicates, Śmigielska defines the tools that can be used in predicate description such as the semantic decomposition of predicates into simpler elements, supplemented, where necessary, by contradiction tests and paraphrasing.

The Cognitive Discourse Parameters of Directive Speech Acts in Modern Ukrainian

The Cognitive Discourse Parameters of Directive Speech Acts in Modern Ukrainian

Author(s): OLEKSANDR MEZHOV,Natalia Kostusiak,Maryna Navalna / Language(s): English Issue: 22/2022

The article presents a comprehensive multifaceted analysis of directive speech acts (based on modern media texts from the popular Ukrainian newspaper Day) taking into account the following approaches: 1) cognitive-semantic, with the projection of directive statements on extralingual reality, the study of their propositional-syntactic structure, and semantic relations between components; 2) formal-grammatical, which involves the identification of morphological and syntactic means of expression of motivation and the specifics of the positional structure of sentences; 3) communicative-syntactic, which allows for the characterization of directive statements in terms of their intonation and actual articulation; 4) communicative-pragmatic and discursive, which focuses on the specifics of certain types of directive speech acts in specific discourses, their perlocutionary effect, pragmatic intentions of the speakers, their communicative strategies and tactics, the interaction of the addresser and the recipient and more. Directive speech acts with infinitives, verbs of imperative, conditional and optative moods, present, past and future tenses, which are based on performative constructions, are distinguished from the formal-grammatical point of view. They all have the same propositional meaning, which at the semantic-syntactic level of the sentence is implemented in the following obligatory syntaxemes: the subject (speaker), the predicate of volitional action, the recipient of volitional action or the potential subject of action, and the predicate of potential action. In specific communicative acts, the syntaxeme of the subject of volitional action is correlated with the recipient of speech, i.e., the speaker expressing the communicative intention of motivation, and the complex syntax of the recipient of volitional action-subject of potential action – with the recipient of speech, i.e., the interlocutor from whom the speaker expects on his volition.

Когнитивно-дискурсивные особенности выступления Джо Байдена на совместном заседании Конгресса США 29 апреля 2021 г.

Когнитивно-дискурсивные особенности выступления Джо Байдена на совместном заседании Конгресса США 29 апреля 2021 г.

Author(s): O. I. Afonina / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2022

This article examines the cognitive and discursive aspects of Joe Biden’s April 2021 statement on the epidemiological situation in the United States and the American Jobs Plan. The relevance of the research stems from the need to better understand the tactics and strategies employed by politicians to influence their audiences at the times when politics plays a key role in our lives. Here, the lexical and syntactic features of U.S. President Joe Biden’s speech were considered in order to describe him as a linguistic personality. The main methods used were descriptive, contextual, and keyword analyses. A number of examples prove that Joe Biden uses very expressive linguistic devices to achieve the maximum effect on his listeners: firstly, the U.S. President was found to place particular emphasis on stylistic devices; secondly, various parenthetical elements were highlighted; thirdly, certain distinctive expressive devices were identified; finally, special attention was given to the study of the syntax of the statement. Based on the obtained results, the linguistic personality of Joe Biden within political discourse was characterized in detail. For example, he uses linguistic and pragmatic devices to influence the audience rather than to convey the message. An important generalization is that the discourse of a politician reflects social problems, and the functions of lexical means vary depending on the socio-political situation in a state.

STRATEGIES OF NEGATIVE POLITENESS INVOLVING THE COMPLEX PREDICATE WITH MODAL OPERATOR AND VERBAL SEMANTIC SUPPORT WITHIN THE ROMANIAN AND SPANISH TELEVISUAL-POLITICAL DISCOURSE

STRATEGIES OF NEGATIVE POLITENESS INVOLVING THE COMPLEX PREDICATE WITH MODAL OPERATOR AND VERBAL SEMANTIC SUPPORT WITHIN THE ROMANIAN AND SPANISH TELEVISUAL-POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Author(s): Laura Grama / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 23/2020

The article approaches pragmatic issues of the complex predicate with modal operator and verbal semantic support within the Romanian and Spanish televisual-political discourse, more precisely the role of modal operators within a strategy specific to negative politeness: the indirect expression of the illocutionary force by formulating the requests in modalized utterances. It is emphasized that, through modal operators, the locutor decreases the cost and increases the benefit for the interlocutor (the tact maxim of the politeness principle) ensuring verbal cooperation during the conversation.

Neutralisation in the expression of location and destination of motion in Croatian

Neutralisation in the expression of location and destination of motion in Croatian

Author(s): Sanja Zubčić / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

In Croatian, the location and destination of motion are expressed mainly by various syntactic means, but their neutralisation is also described in the literature, especially in South Čakavian dialects. This paper examines the distribution of this phenomenon in written texts from the Middle Ages onwards, in Čakavian and Štokavian, and in contemporary Čakavian and Croatian Štokavian dialects, in order to determine its age and distribution. By comparing the distribution of this isogloss with the distribution of various Eastern Romance languages on the eastern Adriatic coast, its origin, previously associated with the Dalmatian language, will be more precisely determined.

Upućivanje i prihvaćanje komplimenata na primjeru hrvatskih i njemačkih studenata

Upućivanje i prihvaćanje komplimenata na primjeru hrvatskih i njemačkih studenata

Author(s): Julijana Čikara,Anita Pavić Pintarić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2023

This paper aims to determine the similarities and differences in the formation of compliments and compliment responses by Croatian and German students. The research was carried out by means of the Discourse Completion Test questionnaire among 30 students at the University of Zadar and 30 students at the University of Heidelberg. The way of giving compliments was analyzed at the lexical, morphological, and syntactic level. Furthermore, to determine to what extent the context influences the giving and receiving of compliments, the following contextual variables were analyzed: the subject of the compliment (appearance, ability, assets, personality), the formality of the situation (formal/informal situation), social status, role and closeness of interlocutors (strangers, acquaintances, friends, best friends). Regarding the response to compliments, the similarities and differences in closeness and the way of expressing compliments and their linguistic form were analyzed. Similarities refer to the ways of expressing compliments in both languages with elliptical and exclamatory sentences. Differences refer to forms of giving compliments. The most common responses to compliments were acceptance and gratitude.

Observații privind scrierea limbii române și noul DOOM

Observații privind scrierea limbii române și noul DOOM

Author(s): Ioana Crețu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2023

This paper considers the principles of writing the Romanian language in relation with the new orthographic dictionary. Phonetic, morphological, syntactical and etymological aspects led to the establishment of a system of rules in the Romanian writing language that can be easily learned and applied. Last year appeared the third edition of the orthographic dictionary regulating current writing. The Orthographic, Orthoepic and Morphological Dictionary of the Romanian Language (DOOM) adapts the writing of Romanian to current requirements, even if some double variants and also linguistic uncertainties are still present. The frequency of errors in today's press shows that publishers and journalists show a lack of professionalism, promoting media products of questionable quality, as well as the lack of trust in such valid tools that can improve correct writing.

Kur’ân’ın Secili Söz Dizgelerinin 7. Yüzyıl Arapların Lügavî Örf ve Âdetleriyle Diyalektik İlişkisi

Kur’ân’ın Secili Söz Dizgelerinin 7. Yüzyıl Arapların Lügavî Örf ve Âdetleriyle Diyalektik İlişkisi

Author(s): Emrah Dindi / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2023

One of the most basic stylistic characteristics of the Qur’ān is the agree-ment between syllables, sounds, lines and rhymes repeated at the end of the verses and give the same harmony. The question/problem “Are these words that have pleasant melodic structures and superior arts something that the Arabs of the 7th century Hejaz Region did not know, were not familiar with and did not hear, or are they expressions that existed in oral and literary types in their daily vocabulary formed and embodied within the framework of well-known lexical customs and literary tastes?” is discussed in this article. For this purpose, the study examines the seciʿ and rhyming word structures in the verbal and literary discourses of the Jahiliya period Arabs. Then, based on the data in the ancient Islamic Literature, it examines the dialectical relationship of the melodic structures at the end of the verses of the Qur’ān with the characteristics of the seciʿ and rhyming literary products in the poems of the Arab poets of ignorance, and for the choice that the Arab society made it a custom and habit at that time to observe at the end of the words, and whether some rules of comparison of the language were abandoned or not. Of course, although the dialectical relationship between the seciʿ expression structures of the Qur’ān and the literary tastes of the Arabs of that period was addressed in the former literature with a weak and feeble voice between the lines, unfortunately, this has not been examined in modern studies yet. For this reason, we hope that the present study, which we think is original and authentic, will contribute to this field and as a result of the study, in which the literature review method was used, whether the harmonious, rhythmic, melodic sound and meter structures of the Qur’ān at the end of the verses are related to the literary tastes, lexical customs and traditions of the 7th century Arabs, or rather, these expressions were unknown to the Arabs of that day, will be uncovered along with the question whether it existed in a wonderful, transcendent and transcendent language and style that they were not familiar with, or in a local, regional, cultural anthropological nature that was compatible and agreeable with their tastes and expectations in that time.

Tarama Sözlüğü’nün Ters Dizimi

Tarama Sözlüğü’nün Ters Dizimi

Author(s): Yusuf Can AYDIN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 29/2023

The term "reverse syntagm" is used to describe the arrangement starting from the last letters of words rather than the first letters, and it holds an important place in language studies. Reverse syntagm allows for the grouping of words that end with the same sounds or suffixes. In addition to providing insights into the affixation culture, it also saves time for researchers. Numerous studies have been conducted on reverse syntagm in our language as well as in different languages. “Tarama Dictionary”, which is constantly used by researchers due to its significant linguistic material, has an index prepared by adhering to the alphabet used in Ottoman Turkish and its ordering. With this study, in which we have conducted the reverse syntagm of the “Tarama Dictionary”, our aim is to provide benefits to researchers in many fields.

PRAGMATIC FUNCTIONS OF THE REPETITION OF THE COMPLEX PREDICATE WITH MODAL AND ASPECTUAL OPERATOR WITHIN THE SPANISH TELEVISUAL POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Author(s): Laura Grama / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 25/2021

The article approaches pragmatic issues of the complex predicate with modal and aspectual operator and verbal semantic support within the Spanish televisual political discourse, more precisely the pragmatic functions of the repetition of the complex predicate. It is emphasized that the repetition of the complex predicate with modal and aspectual operator has conversational functions, being involved in the exchange of roles between interlocutors or as a form of dialogue control, as well as interactive functions, highlighting the relationships between the actors of the conversational exchange.

Vývoj gramatické kompetence u českého dítěte

Vývoj gramatické kompetence u českého dítěte

Author(s): Pavla Chejnová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2023

The article summarizes the main tendencies in a Czech monolingual child’s development of morphology and syntax, then compares the results with those found in foreign research. After analyzing the authentic utterances of the child, the article presents universal strategies for acquiring grammatical categories and illustrates specificities of Czech. There are universal tendencies in first language acquisition, such as the sequence of acquiring nominal cases and the interrelation between certain verbal categories. Hypergeneralization is another universal tendency. Grammatical development is linked to cognitive development and pragmatic competence — children express what they need using the language means available, thus the linguistic means necessary to express immediate needs develop faster. The influence of cognitive and pragmatic factors also manifests in syntactic development. The research shows that the cognitive load of the structure — the mental processes needed to produce the utterance — is more important than the formal structure of the sentence.

CODE-SWITCHING

CODE-SWITCHING

Author(s): Gabriela Stanciu-Șerban / Language(s): French Issue: 26/2021

A notion which is often emphasized thanks to the presence of bilingualism is the code-switching. There are a lot of debates, polemics around this relatively new notion which refers to the use of two languages in the speech of a bilingual person; the novelty and the unknown of this concept turn this idea into a negative one, being considered “a danger” for the knowledge of the two languages (it is considered that bilingual persons will not know any language). It’s actually about a characteristic of bilingual persons to pass from one language to another, to use words that belong to the two languages. The code-switching (notion used for the first time by Maria Causa) refers to the passages from one language to another, to the dynamic character of the two languages and also to the uniqueness and the stability of every linguistic system.

SYNTACTIC LEVEL IN THE POETRY OF ȘTEFAN AUGUSTIN DOINAȘ

Author(s): Andreea Emanuela Vîlcescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 29/2022

The present study aims to highlight certain relevant aspects of syntactic order, encountered throughout the poems of Ștefan Augustin Doinaș. The main purpose of these aspects is to make the work understood as well as possible, by discussing in detail and explaining some issues that generate artistic complexity. Understanding syntactic aspects will make the reader understand why the lyrical self proposes several variants of the same word level and it shows the functionality of some words following some combinations of stylistic nature.

Interpunkcja i składnia w pracach studentów pedagogiki — norma i uzus

Interpunkcja i składnia w pracach studentów pedagogiki — norma i uzus

Author(s): Małgorzata Bortliczek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2022

The paper focuses on the ignoring of selected punctuation standards in texts prepared by pedagogy students at the University of Silesia. The analysis includes the description of some punctuation experiences, such as not using essential commas for separation, among others, of subordinate sentences (and/or participial sentence equivalents), interconnected with the superior sentence; separation of the subject group and the predicate group with a comma (as a consequence of following a prosody in the distribution of commas); irregular normative policy (as a consequence, among others, of ignorance of punctuation enumeration). The conclusion highlights didactic and normative recommendations in terms of modern Polish punctuation. It includes the necessity to record, register and analyse new punctuation tendencies in texts written in Polish, such as the ignorance of selected punctuation standards, and the turn towards secondary orality, following the impact of English punctuation.

ADVANCED SPEAKER, QUASI-NATIVE SPEAKER: THE ROLE OF THE MOTHER TONGUE IN THE MORPHOSYNTACTIC DEVELOPMENT OF FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

ADVANCED SPEAKER, QUASI-NATIVE SPEAKER: THE ROLE OF THE MOTHER TONGUE IN THE MORPHOSYNTACTIC DEVELOPMENT OF FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Author(s): Simona GRIGORAȘ / Language(s): French Issue: 32/2023

Acquisitional literature defines the stages of language acquisition, their characteristic features and the types of speakers, while highlighting the role of the mother tongue in learning a foreign language. In the case of the acquisition of French, it has been found that the pace is very fast at the basic levels while at the advanced levels, the progression becomes less visible. Studies show that age has an important role, but to this are added the input factor, the properties of the linguistic structures to be acquired, the frequency of occurrence and the typical frequency. Specialists note the difficulty of defining the advanced variety. They propose another category „the quasi-native level”. To establish the characteristic features of the advanced variety, three areas of investigation were established: the fragile areas that reveal grammatical competence, discursive competence and the linguistic competence. By analyzing these aspects in the acquisition of French as a foreign language in children and adults, we wonder about the conditions to be fulfilled for a learner to reach the quasi-native level. Even if the studies speak of a critical age between 4 and 13 years, beyond which the quasi-native stage is no longer accessible, there are many examples that contradict them. Attitude, motivation, cultural representations can facilitate the process or become an obstacle. As perfect linguistic competence does not exist, the opposition native – non-native serves rather to give confidence to natives and to insecure others, while remaining a stereotype categorization, of a social or professional nature.
