Why Humans Aren’t Just Great Apes

Why Humans Aren’t Just Great Apes

Author(s): Robin I.M. Dunbar / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2008

Although we share many aspects of our behaviour and biology with our primate cousins, humans are, nonetheless, different in one crucial respect: our capacity to live in the world of the imagination. This is reflected in two core aspects of our behaviour that are in many ways archetypal of what it is to be human: religion and story-telling. I shall show how these remarkable traits seem to have arisen as a natural development of the social brain hypothesis, and the underlying nature of primate sociality and cognition, as human societies have been forced to expand in size during the course of our evolution over the past 5 million years.

Svijet Biblije – neophodan kontekst kod proučavanja Starog zavjeta

Author(s): Monika Bajić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2021

The Bible was not originally written for the modern reader, but the testimony of the Church is that it continues to speak God’s word to readers/hearers today. However, many modern Bible readers come across texts that need further explanation because the biblical authors did not offer clarification of their writings. They assumed the readers of their time were familiar with the background and could understand the reported events without further explanation. To achieve a “legit” interpretation of Old Testament texts, we first need to understand Scripture correctly, meaning that the biblical text must be read in its narrower and broader context. Only within a context does it become clear what the author meant to say. The main argument of this article is to exhibit that the Bible can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the Ancient Near East (ANE). The broader context consists of the knowledge of surrounding nations during Bible times (i.e., Hebrew Bible). By examining ANE texts and archeological findings we achieve a more complete and enriched comprehension of a given scriptural text or passage. This article exhibits through some concrete examples how archeological findings, inscriptions, and Ancient Near East texts can aid in understanding the broader context of the Old Testament world. In return, the wider context of the Bible world can enlighten or clarify a difficult, incomprehensible, or ambiguous biblical text and henceforth scriptural interpretation become more accurate and closer to the original message and meaning.

The Theological Importance of Prof. Uwe’s Christian Poems

The Theological Importance of Prof. Uwe’s Christian Poems

Author(s): Paul Tseng / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Prof. Heinz-Uwe Haus is an internationally renowned director and is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on Bertolt Brecht. Besides his theatrical achievements, he proves to have a profound knowledge of Christian doctrines, which is significantly well portrayed in his Christian poems. His poetic lines unveil the essential spirit of the New Testament. In this paper, a few poems are chosen to illustrate his theological thoughts, which are intricately connected with the core value of the New Testament, including Jesus’ crucifixion, salvation, man’s real nature, fundamental faith, and so on.

Theoretical analysis of R22 substitution with R417 on board of fishing vessels - thermodynamic, environmental and Islamic aspects

Theoretical analysis of R22 substitution with R417 on board of fishing vessels - thermodynamic, environmental and Islamic aspects

Author(s): Feiza Memet / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

R22 is a refrigerant that has dominated marine refrigeration onboard fishing vessels till 1 January 2015. Because in its composition exist ozone-depleting chlorine atoms, this refrigerant needs acceptable substitution solutions, to achieve the ozone protection desiderate. For R22 was not found a unique replacement solution. This paper investigates the opportunity to substitute R22 with the refrigerant R 417A, due to its very close thermodynamic properties to R22 and, moreover to its friendly behavior to the ozone layer. Seafood consumption is permitted for Muslims, fishing activity being important for these communities. Fishing depends on vapor compression refrigeration technology, equipment known to be an important energy consumer. In this paper, it is shown that environmental preservation is important in the refrigeration industry and in Islam, as well. The theoretical analysis developed in this paper focuses on the seawater cooling system onboard fishing vessels while catching in tropical waters. The investigation has energetic, environmental, and Islamic components. The comparison between the plant working with R22 and with R417A reveals that the ecologic refrigerant represents a wise solution for retrofitting existing plants.

Grigore Nandriș. Bridging the East and the West through the History of Language, Culture, Religion

Author(s): Iulian Isbăşoiu,Nicoleta Stanca / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

In a recent context in which Romania is confronted with the problem of emigration, this article portrays the life and works of Grigore Nandriș (1895-1968), university professor and patriot, who offers an example of devotion to his profession and country that could be set as a standard for all the following generations. He defended Romania in the war, as a soldier, and then at home in the academia, at the University of Chernivtsi and abroad, in France, at the Romanian School at Fontenay-aux-Roses, and in England, at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London. Brilliant linguist, speaking 14 foreign languages, he left a considerable amount of books, articles, reviews, conferences on linguistics, folklore, religion, and culture, being mainly interested in establishing links between language and place and culture and neighbouring nations. And above all, Grigore Nandriș’s personality remains a landmark among scholars in his field and colleagues, friends, students, and followers, who admired his devotedness to the Romanian cause abroad.

How to reason about religious beliefs

How to reason about religious beliefs

Author(s): Daniele Bertini / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Intractable disagreements are commonly analyzed in terms of the semantic opposition of (at least) couples of disputed beliefs (purely epistemic view, from here on PEV). While such a view seems to be a very natural starting point, my intuitions are that such an approach is misleadingly unrealistic, and that an empirical modeling towards how individuals hold beliefs in intractable opposition constitutes a strong defeater for PEV. My work addresses disagreements within the religious domain. Accordingly, I will be concerned with developing my empirical understanding of religious beliefs, and will show the consequences of such proposal on how to answer the problem of religious diversity.

The CRO Laudato Si’ Project: Goals, Activities, and Social Outcomes

Author(s): Miriam Mary Brgles,Zoran Turza,Marija Žagmešter / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

On the eve of 2020, and the fifth anniversary of the publication of the Encyclical Letter - Laudato Si’. On the care for the common home at the Catholic University of Croatia, the scientific-professional project CRO Laudato Si’ was launched. The project team was composed of scientists from different disciplines, and the project partners were the National Fraternity of the Franciscan Secular Order and the Franciscan Youth. As part of the project, scientific and practical activities were carried out. One of the main scientific activities was empirical scientific research, which was conducted, using a survey method over several months in 2020. The paper will present the results of the research, related to the role of the project in the knowledge of the encyclical Laudato Si’ and the awakening of interest in the encyclical, according to the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. The results show that men have heard of the encyclical Laudato Si’ to a somewhat greater extent than women. The largest number of respondents, who heard about the encyclical for the first time through the project, are those who belong to the youngest age group, followed by those with high school education. Arousing interest in Encyclical Letter topics is more encouraged among women, those over 65 years old, respondents with completed primary school, and those who are self-employed or retired.

RATUNEK DLA GOSPODARKI CZY ZAGROŻENIE ZE WSCHODU? UKRAIŃCY W NAGŁÓWKACH „GAZETY WROCŁAWSKIEJ”

Author(s): Anna Skibińska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

Author(s): Policarp Chițulescu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 9/2010

The Romanian Orthodox Church, as very well known, forms the cradle of the Romanian culture, civilization and spirituality. It created and promoted the values and activities that had their source in the inner beauty of the human being, springing from faith and meditation. Also in the threshold of the Church, the first printing presses were built up, bringing to life the first printed materials in our country; Romanians also took care of their fellow orthodox believers from the Oriental world and from other regions that were suffering from the heavy Ottoman yoke, by sending them books and printed materials in their language, in order to feed their spirit. The Holy Synod Library in Bucharest, located on the premises of the Antim Monastery, holds a vast fund of old Romanian and foreign books. Upon their research for the compilation of a catalogue, several books were discovered that bear the ownership mark of some of the best known Romanian mediaeval book collectors: the High Steward Constantin Cantacuzino, Nicolae Mavrocordat, the Archbishop Neofit the Cretan, not to mention the efforts for collecting books of the Valachian Archbishops Teodosie and Antim Ivireanul, as recorded on the books’ pages. These books were initially kept in the old library of the Valachian Mitropoly; a part of them were taken by the Academy of the Saint Sava Monastery (nowadays, the library of the Romanian Academy), and the other part, by the Central Seminary (the communists dissolved it in 1948), nowadays the Library of the Holy Synod.

Author(s): Georgeta Fodor / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 9/2010

The study aims at revealing the ways through which women from Wallahia, Moldavia and Transylvania faced and prepared the death according to the religious prescriptions preached by the clergy. The present assumptions are based on a detailed analysis of the testaments written by both men and women from the three Pricipalities during the Middle Ages and the XVIIth century. We also analysed some of the funeral writings of the XVIIth century which taught the Christians how to live and die.

“REASON AND FAITH”. THE PROBLEM OF THE SEPARATION OF DISCIPLINES

Author(s): Grzegorz Bugajak / Language(s): English Issue: S2/2020

The paper maintains and reinforces a viewpoint that science and religion (theology) are methodologically and epistemologically independent. However, it also suggests that this independence can be overcome if a “third party” is taken into account, that is – philosophy. Such a possibility seems to follow from the thesis of incommensurability and the thesis of underdetermination formulated and analysed in the current philosophy of science.

CZY W KULTURZE POSTCHRZEŚCIJAŃSKIEJ MOŻNA RACJONALNIE WIERZYĆ W NICEJSKIE CREDO?

Author(s): Alan Donagan / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

The author asks whether, in today’s scientific culture which favors naturalist philosophy, one can rationally accept the Christian faith, as it is expressed in the Nicene Creed. Throughout the paper, three kinds of problems faced by Christian believers and inquirers are addressed, for instance (1) the development of the Christian doctrine in time, (2) the problems resulting from the ongoing progress of natural sciences and of biblical studies, and (3) the plausibility of certain historical claims made by Christianity. The author concludes that although what the Apostles taught seems incredible from the contemporary naturalist point of view, there are no sufficient grounds on which to deny the rationality of Christian faith. Since science cannot reasonably explain many beliefs concerning human beings or provide remedy for the misery of the human condition, decisions regarding issues such as whether to persist in faith or whether to embrace faith are by no means impossible or irrational. Yet, the author indicates, faith is ultimately a matter of grace.

Hayızlı Kadının Orucu Meselesi: ‘Sen Harûrî Misin?’ Rivayeti Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Hayızlı Kadının Orucu Meselesi: ‘Sen Harûrî Misin?’ Rivayeti Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Author(s): Rabia Zahide Temiz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 3/2021

Fasting of women on the days of her menstruation period is an issue that takes place in current fiqh discussions. Some contemporary researchers say that there is no religious obstacle for women to fast during these times. Moreover, they state that there is no reason to interrupt fasting, on the contrary, claim obliged to fasting. Meanwhile in traditional fiqh, it is stated that is religiously forbidden for women to fast during this period, rather it is claimed that fasting in this period is ḥaram. The evidence brought to the views of all the mujtahids, who expressed their opinions on this matter was a narration from ʿĀʾisha Bint Abī Bakr (d. 58/678), a wife of Prophet (p.b.u.h). When a woman asked her if she should have fulfilled her ṣalāt (prayer) later, which she could not perform while she was in menstruation period, she responded to her as “are you Ḥarūrī?” then explained the answer. In some variants of this narration, matter of fasting is included in the question or answer. In this article, the issue of women's fasting during menstruation is discussed from a perspective based on isnād-matn analysis in the context of this narration which is called the “Ḥarūrī Ḥadīth”. In the matn of 71 riwāya identified on this article, it has been determined that the issue of fasting was added to the matns narrated by Ma'mer bin Rās̲h̲ id and to some other narrations which in their corroborative (mutābī) matns not includes fasting. In later times, the version of the text with the mention of fasting was accepted as the original and became the proof that fasting of the menstruating woman was forbidden by religion. Considering the hadiths, which do not include issue of fasting, it is seen that the woman tābiʿī (Successor of the Companions) named Muâze asked ʿĀʾisha what the sunnah was about menstruating woman’s ṣalāt. Because in that era a sect called K̲h̲ārid̲j̲ites had claimed that women had to fulfill the ṣalāt that they could not perform during their menstruation, later. There are also other narrations mention the fasting of the menstruating woman. All these narrations indicated that the Prophet did not forbid fasting when menstruating, on the contrary, he just pointed out that fasting was interrupted due to menstruation. As fasting is not a worship like ṣalāt from which the woman is exempted from, a woman may interrupt fasting but must unconditionally fulfill this worship later. Thus, the situation of a woman in such a situation is equaled to the sufferer and the travelers who have a break from fasting. It is stated in traditional fiqh that a menstruating woman will not have to perform ṣalāts later that she couldn't fulfill in time. The necessity of performing a worship must be determined by a clear order of the prophet. However, a clear order regarding the prohibition of fasting during menstruation was not sought. Consequently, it is seen that the narrations are more clear evidence of the absence of any prohibition than they reveal the prohibition of fasting. It has been emphasized in the narratives that it is permissible for a woman to postpone her fast, but she is absolutely obliged to compensate the fasts that she did not fulfill, and she is not exempt from fasting as she is exempt from ṣalāt.

Relația timp – veșnicie. O abordare transdisciplinară

Author(s): Marius Gheorghe Tănase / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 7-9/2021

From a theological perspective, time has soteriological value, because every moment of time carries in it the possibility of eternity. Time represents the consummation of being through the acquisition of eternity. And eternity is acquired through life in Christ, renewed by the grace of the Holy Spirit through the mystery of the Church in the world.

Wokół ewolucji i kreacji - wstępna analiza ankiet nauczycieli i studentów

Author(s): Jacek Tomczyk,Grzegorz Bugajak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2006

The paper presents the results of the research which was carried out as part of the project: Current controversies about human origins. Between anthropology and the Bible. This project focuses on the supposed conflict between natural sciences and some branches of the humanities (notably philosophy and theology) with regard to the origin of man. The research was aimed at finding out whether such a conflict really exits. For one thing, we cannot exclude the possibility that these would-be controversies have no factual ground and that their significance is inflated by American popular literature. If, on the other hand, we assume that the conflict is real, it should be worthwhile examining its sources. Such an approach may prove helpful in systematising the highly emotional debates about the origin of man. One of the ways of tackling the issue was the questionnaire which was distributed among students, teachers and university professors. Our respondents represented three disciplines: theology, philosophy and the natural sciences, the paper will present selected results of the questionnaire which was addressed to a group of school teachers, whereas the responses of the students are given less attention in order to emphasise the teachers’ point of view, the teachers of religion and the natural sciences (biology, chemistry and physics) and the students of theology, philosophy and the natural sciences (specialising in biology and environment protection) were asked to fill in the form consisting of eleven questions, these questions concerned the following issues: the existence of the conflict between evolutionism and creationism, the definitions of creation and evolution, the existence of the spiritual element in man, ways of interpreting the Bible (esp. the first chapters of the Book of Genesis). Out of 1000 questionnaires sent out, we received 449, which should be considered a satisfactory number, given the fact that it was the first time this type of research was carried out in Poland.

THE ROLE OF THE SERBIAN CHURCH IN THE IMMUNIZATION OF THE POPULATION DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY

THE ROLE OF THE SERBIAN CHURCH IN THE IMMUNIZATION OF THE POPULATION DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY

Author(s): Vuk Dautović / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2021

In the first decades of the 19th century, along with the formation of the national state, a national church organization was constituted. Public health, control of infectious diseases and sanitation were also in their infancy, and since the 1830s, a legal framework for vaccinating the population against smallpox has been in place. The various then existing healing practices between the magical and the religious are gradually giving way to modern medicine. Suspicion of vaccination, which was an already known practice in the Balkans in the 18th century, has affected epidemics and their scale. In the first half of the 19th century, the Serbian church organization played a very active role in popularizing vaccination, but also in its implementation. For the first time in recent history, along with the role in religious life, the church became a mobilizing social force that modernized the attitude of the contemporary society towards health, leading it to accept immunization against infectious diseases. Numerous sanitary regulations established at this time radically changed old habits and religious customs, such as funerals as a complex religious and social ceremony. Circulars of Serbian metropolitans precisely determined and ordered the clergy to encourage vaccination. These means are fully incorporated into church life from sermons as old moral-didactic forms of communication to penance or excommunication from the Holy Sacrament of Marriage for those who have not been vaccinated. Knowing the role of the Serbian church in the early 19th century affirming the immunization of the population, emancipating it in accordance with modern health science, can be useful as an existing and historically tested model of socially beneficial action. Vaccination of almost the entire population against this vicious disease before the end of the 19th century produced sporadic, small-scale epidemics, during the First World War and the 1970s.
