As a teenager, Pavel Knihař got involved in the illegal publication of anti-communist materials in Czechoslovakia. He was apprehended and subsequently released. Faced with the threat of further imprisonment, however, he went into exile and joined the Foreign Legion. He fought in its ranks for thirty years. Among other things, this included campaigns against communist insurgents in Indochina and nationalists in Algeria. He acquitted himself well in battle. Knihař has been awarded several decorations for his bravery, including the Légion d’honneur. He has also most recently been awarded the Václav Benda commemorative medal.
