PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN OF 2013: DEVELOPING TRENDS, OR SOMETHING NEW?

PŘEDVOLEBNÍ KAMPANĚ 2013: PROHLOUBENÍ TRENDŮ, NEBO NÁSTUP NOVÝCH?

Author(s): Alena Macková,Miloš Gregor / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Parliamentary elections 2013; Czech Republic; Political parties;

S tím souvisel i fakt, že místo dosavadního fenoménu stále nákladnějších kampaní vynaložily politické strany v roce 2013 podstatně méně finančních prostředků v porovnání s předchozími lety.

MEDIA AND ELECTIONS

MÉDIA A VOLBY

Author(s): Lenka Hrbková,Alena Macková / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Media and elections; Politics and media; election campaigns; Politicas and communication;

Author(s): Tomáš Maceček,Roman Chytilek / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Public opinion; Election survey;

Author(s): Peter Spáč / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Candidates selection; political parties; Elections in Czech Republic; 2013;

Author(s): Jakub Šedo / Language(s): Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: traditional calculations; who will win; political parties;

UPS AND DOWNS OF TURKISH RELATIONSHIP WITH ERBIL AND BAGHDAD IN THE POST-2003 ERA

Author(s): Tomáš Kaválek / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: foreign policy; Iraq; KRG; Kurdistan Regional Government; New Foreign Policy; Turkey;

This article elaborates on the development of the Turkish foreign policy towards Iraqi Federal and Kurdistan Regional Government (IFG and KRG) since the US invasion to Iraq in 2003. The article analyzes several dimensions of Turkey’s foreign policy towards KRG and IFG: security, politics and economy. Relations between Iraqi Kurds and Turkey underwent remarkable change since 2009. Rather warm relations with Baghdad started to falter since 2009 onwards. Strengthening Iran’s influence over predominantly Shiite Iraqi Federal Government since the US pullout from Iraq only strengthened Turkey’s reliance on Erbil. In 2014, ISIS swept through vast Sunni areas of Iraq bringing decay of Baghdad’s power and further increasing its dependency on Tehran.

RUSSIA’S ECONOMIC INTERESTS IN SLOVAKIA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CONTINUING CRISIS IN UKRAINE

Author(s): Miroslav Mareš,Tomáš Bělonožník / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Russia; Slovakia; European Union; nuclear power plants; broad-gauge railway;

This paper aims to evaluate and predict the impact of the Ukraine crisis on Russian economic interests in Slovakia. It argues thatthe crisis has caused a profound change of the discourse that frames EU-Russian relations. The shift from the rhetoric of integration and partnership towards the securitisation of mutual relations could have significant implications for Russian economic interests in the European Union. Over a long period, the Slovak government of Robert Fico has been successfully working on the “reactivation” of friendly relations with Russia. However, we believe that even Slovakia could be influenced by the strategic shift in discourse towards Russia that occurred at the EU level.

IS THERE A THREAT OF NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE?

Author(s): Lukáš Visingr,Miroslav Mareš / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Proliferation; Central and Eastern Europe; crisis in Ukraine;

Central and Eastern Europe, taking into account the potential impact of the contemporary crisis in Ukraine. The authors start by describing the historical attempts made by Central and East European countries to obtain nuclear weapons during the Cold War and the post-Cold War period. The main focus is on current trends, including a prediction of possible future developments. The policies of state as well as non-state actors are considered, including nationalist calls for nuclear armament. The authors conclude that the risk of proliferation in this region should not be overestimated; equally, however, certain ‘early warning signals’ should be not ignored.

Author(s): Michelle F. Wright / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Digital age; self-presentation; communication with others in the digital age;

“Fraped” Selves: Hacked, Tagged, and Shared Without Permission. The Challenges of Identity Development for Young People on Facebook

Author(s): Anca Velicu,Monica Barbovschi / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: social networking sites; identity development; adolescent; online privacy; personal data misuse;

Social Networking Sites (SNS) play an important role in the daily lives of adolescents by helping them to develop two core developmental characteristics –identity and intimacy. SNS can also contribute to developing adolescents’ identities by eliciting peer feedback (Valkenburg & Peter, 2011). However, children’s unpleasant experiences with the misuse of their online personal information are among the rapidly increasing online risks, as reported by children ages 9–16 in the Net Children Go Mobile (2012–14) and EU Kids Online III (2012–14) projects. These troublesome situations – e.g., dealing with impersonation through hacked accounts (with the impersonator sending rude messages to damage reputation) or dealing with slanderous pages created by peers – pose challenges to young people’s need for creating and maintaining their online identity in the context of their peer relationships.

The Educational Dimension of Pornography: Adolescents’ Use of New Media for Sexual Purposes

Author(s): Anna Ševčíková,Kristian Daneback,Laura E. Simon / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: youth; sexual explicit material; sex education; internet;

In this chapter, we discuss the role of online pornography use in adolescents’ sexual lives, and its effects on young internet users. The review of research indicates that online pornography may have a multi-faceted function. While the most common definition of pornography stems from its purposeful intention to increase sexual arousal, there is emerging evidence that adolescents deliberately access these materials online not only for sexual arousal but also for sex education. Furthermore, we show how the line between pleasure and sex self-education can be blurred. Thanks to online pornography use, adolescents may learn what sexually excites them and how they respond to various sexual stimuli.

Section 4: Participating in Politics

Author(s): Monika Metyková / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: New media and politics; mainstream Czech politicians;

In this section we provide a taste of research carried out under the heading of new media and politics by a team of researchers in media studies, sociology, and political science at Masaryk University in Brno. As always, some disclaimers are due before we outline the contributions that appear in this section. “Politics” and “political” are terms that have increasingly become descriptive of wide areas of our (everyday) lives – ranging from culture through sexuality all the way to how we dispose of our rubbish. In this section we attempt to provide a selection of our research that covers areas from institutional politics through citizens’ participatory practices to the fate of Europe’s largest and, arguably, most neglected minority – the Roma.
